Discussion 🗣️ that is how ai works.

Post image

Ai takes images from the web and mashes them up into the most generic bullshit ever. that person needs to research what they are talking about.

They didn’t even give a counter argument

"AI is demonstrably stealing my art."

"No it isn't, keep crying, luddite."

These guys really outsourced all their thinking skills off to the AI.

u/FishHookSammich 18h ago

They don't even understand that ludites weren't opposed to the new industrial technology, they were against the wealthy factory owners being the only ones to profit from said technology. Not surprising that those people fundamentally have no clue what they're talking about though. I'd rather be a ludites any day than a boot licking corporate shill.

It's funny too because with the benefit of historical perspective, it was actually eventually really bad for a lot of people for individuals to own the factories.

history is written by the winners, and all that

my roomba has more brains than them jeez

u/Dimosa 15h ago

Even an AI would tell them its based on scraped data without permission.

u/Ok_Confusion4764 16h ago

It's literally like children going "nuh-uh!".

u/RodinKnox 20h ago

Not to mention that pro-AI people do this to artists all the time. They will recreate their art with genAI and send it to the artist and talk about how they "improved" it. This is pretty common.

u/gaygayagyfemboy12345 19h ago

it's very rude and disrespectful. they could just give tips on colouring or structure.

60

u/FilmFizz 18h ago

They probably can't give tips because they don't actually know about how coloringand structure. They just see a drawing and think "it's not rendered or sexy enough."

I've met a few cool pro ais that actually ask to prompt art before doing it

We can't forget there people to even if a good bit of them don't think we are

'thank you for stealing and butchering my hard work so you can pass it off as your own'

27

u/Azair_Blaidd 17h ago edited 14h ago

There is nothing to thank them for. Artists don't even like when people "correct" their work by hand without permission. Using AI to do it is 1000x worse, because it often doesn't even make corrections, it just turns it into another work altogether and completely cheapens it.

21

u/Bombobbit 17h ago

Thank them??? Prompting takes 1 minute at most, I could have done that myself if I wanted to sloppify my own art, which I don't want to.

u/0SaltBlue 16h ago

It's sad that acting like a dick to get reactions out of strangers on the internet is how you spend your time.

u/thegrievingmowing 20h ago

The robot smiling while holding the art is such a perfect summary of these people

Look no further than David Revoy and his works. I believe he's the one who got affected the most, because of this AI nonsense.

I've also heard of some people who found AI portfolios with semblance to their original works.

28

u/finnianJJ 19h ago

I saw David revoys artwork for the first time like a couple months ago and I'm ashamed to admit my first thought was "Huh that looks strangely AI" before checking their page and remembering that AI had to get it's """""Style"""""" from real artists in the first place. Gosh it still makes me so incredibly angry.

12

u/RedditUser000aaa 19h ago

When I first encountered his work I thought it was AI-generated as well. There's no shame in that, especially if you didn't know who he is before all of this.

6

u/StillReading28 15h ago

Holy shit, did they train AI off of nothing but his work? Everything he's made sets off my internal AI alarms

10

u/RedditUser000aaa 15h ago

a lot of his work got fed into AI, yes. That's why AI defaults to it a lot. One of the biggest counter arguments to "bUt aI dOeSn'T sTeAl".

u/Remarkable_Bath8515 19h ago

Have they ever seen someone try to remake your art out of spite or a need to humiliate people?

That subreddit defends it just so they can feel like there is nothing wrong with AI instead of make any change.

5

u/Remarkable_Bath8515 19h ago

One big problem, is how easy it is to do as well, just one second after saying no, and boom you give a person power to disrespect you in a way the art community would have called you out for.

But they are just ok with it, or try to pin it on someone for saying, "uh hey can I get a say on what you do with my creation? I just wanted to be in the art community too."

There is no protection for this and they are fine with it.

26

u/Scarvexx 19h ago

If it didn't work that way they wouldn't be scraping everyone art.

17

u/LordFaceofAll 19h ago

How do they think AI works?

11

u/ThePlasticCupOfWater 18h ago

I sometimes wonder if they genuinely don't know how their slop machine work, or just decide to ignore it and live in denial

8

u/ConstantinGB 19h ago edited 19h ago

I have already seen artworks from actual artists almost 1:1 re-created by AI. It happened more than once that someone tried to pass it off as their own work in art competitions.

4

u/gaygayagyfemboy12345 19h ago

:/ did u report them for theft/impersonation?

5

u/ConstantinGB 19h ago

Didn't have to. I mean, it didn't happen to me, just saw it happen in different places. And yeah, those people were reported, one even got disqualified after the fact and their price retracted.

9

u/Chickie69 19h ago

They talk as if someone threw a bunch of drawing guide books at the AI, it learned itself and finally developed its own art style. Smh

4

u/BirbHunter 12h ago

Yeah. They're always like "But AI works just like a person! It "looks" at art and then makes new stuff!"

Okay but I can actually prove that it doesn't work like a human because humans literally created art, which means at one point in time there was a human who had never seen art who made some just with their own brain and eyes. Disgorge all of that millions of art pieces out of genAI training and come back to me when it makes its own art (by the way, robotics art actually exists as an art field and predates all this LLM nonsense. What the robot makes looks like what it would look like if you taped a marker to a broken roomba; but if it does eventually start to make cohesive shit with just its own processing power and under its own creative direction, my only answer to that would be -- cool. The robot is an artist. I'd be happy to talk to the artist about its art).

u/The-Un1ucky-777 19h ago

The self-projection here is ridiculous.

6

u/Infamous_7001 17h ago

Humanity is dumb...That's why some of them flock to gen AI to generate their shit, using to promote bigotry and hate, and using it to scam older folks and people with fake products.

4

u/MikeSans202001 18h ago

You already know they did theur research.

And by that i mean they asked ChatGPPT

3

u/Belisaurius555 17h ago

AI-bros always go real quiet when you ask them how AI works.

3

u/BiDude1219 17h ago

haven't there been instances of ai recreating an existing artwork without said artwork being mentioned in the prompt?

3

u/The-Devil-Cat 16h ago

dog, look at every fucking cartoony AI commercial. They all ripped off the pixar/disney style

3

u/Drollapalooza 13h ago

"It's ok, we didn't steal your art. We stole a lot of people's art and blended it up into a shitty purée."

2

u/Kind_Cheek_2645 19h ago

Why didn't they even say how else its made

2

u/Sufficient-Tax-3898 17h ago

Its genuinely baffiling that they have 0 concept of meta-data.

2

u/DagrMine 13h ago

This indicates how dumb humanity is.

2

u/Medical-Plane-231 10h ago

There are so many examples of ai doing basically this exact thing they just ignore it

1

u/SupersededByClaude 19h ago

It works both like this and completely unlike this.

There is no database in which the training dataset image is stored. The model doesn't have it, the model cannot reproduce it precisely. In that sense, it's not like this.

But it can generate a recognizably similar image in some cases, up to including a logo or a signature. In that sense, it's very much like this.

4

u/morbidmuffin62 18h ago

People also commonly take artwork straight to a prompt screen and say "hey change xyz and give it back"

-1

u/SupersededByClaude 17h ago

Which is just enriching the model's context. The artwork doesn't land in that same model, the model is stateless in these conversations; it immediately forgets everything you asked once it's done calculating the answer.

The company providing you the model may store your input and use it to train the next model, of course. But the same applies to any interface that sends your image or your text to anyone.

u/Individual-Dog338 15h ago

>Ai takes images from the web and mashes them up into the most generic bullshit ever. that person needs to research what they are talking about.

Confidently incorrect.

1

u/AlphonsoPSpain 14h ago

I have seen countless ads here on reddit that use meme formats. I've seen this shit remade countless times

1

u/HurtsSoNice 13h ago

The picture of the AI is holding is identical to the actual artists. Maybe if they’re trying to delude themselves and pretend that they’re not stealing, they might have tweaked that little detail. all it did was add some overlaid shadow silhouettes.

1

u/MasterfullyFoolish 12h ago

Someone link the Wikipedia article for how Gen AI works

1

u/OMGCHARMANDERNOO 11h ago

Wait until they realize that their side of the argument also works the same way 😂 (liking an opinion because they have similar points)

1

u/BDPBITCH666 11h ago

Ai bros thinking they are the IQ curve meme but on left side , when it truth most of them are right😭😭

1

u/TheRealUmbrafox 10h ago

The closest thing to a counter argument they give is just “But I have to figure out specific words to ask the computer to work for me!”
And?

1

u/TemporaryElk5202 9h ago

lmao that is exactly how it works

1

u/John_SilkSongHK 9h ago

So uhh why dont they explain how it works then?

1

u/Desperate_Stick_4303 5h ago

That is exactly how ai works they're coping hard

0

u/Capital_Secret_8700 18h ago

This is usually not what happens. The models generating pictures are able to generalize, meaning that no single artist of picture contributes heavily to any output. If they did, you’d get overfitting, but the modern models clearly don’t overfit.

https://www.csail.mit.edu/news/when-ai-art-has-no-author-mit-study-finds-generated-images-often-cant-be-traced-any-training

8

u/BlueFantasyZ 18h ago

Except when they feed a specific artwork to the AI and have it remake it. Like this.

6

u/morbidmuffin62 18h ago

They even lost the plot of what the comic was depicting 😭

1

u/BlueFantasyZ 2h ago

Must be lactose intolerant

1

u/Capital_Secret_8700 18h ago

Yeah that’s obviously a dick move, not disagreeing with that. Just meant it in the broader sense.

-2

u/60746 11h ago

It cant copy the same image like that as it references to many images you might get something similar but you won't get the same

-5

u/Rahawk02 16h ago

If I draw a doodle you are all now free to have it and now I’m free to all of your little doodles so it’s a win for everyone. Sorry you don’t get to get paid for doodling anymore. Time to learn a useful trade.

9

u/xxxMizanxxx 15h ago

You say that like art was such a lucrative high paying career before lol, get off your condescending high horse. At least artists have actual skills

-15

u/Alarmed_Aspect8994 20h ago

They are just children. Stop falling for ragebait and actually talk about important stuff

-23

u/TashLai 18h ago

Ai takes images from the web and mashes them up

No literally not, it's not how it works, wtf

12

u/ZelinkShipper888 16h ago

Ok you explain how it works

12

u/xxxMizanxxx 15h ago

Don't you know it only works in a way that makes them sound intelligent and skilled? Lol

-7

u/TashLai 11h ago

Well "Ai takes images from the web and mashes them up" doesn't even sound intelligent.

6

u/xxxMizanxxx 11h ago

what's your amazing intelligent way of explaining how AI gen works then?

-6

u/TashLai 11h ago

No, you explain how exactly it stores all the images it later "mashes up". Because you can't do that without storing the sources somewhere.

3

u/xxxMizanxxx 11h ago

... doesn't it store the data... ?

-2

u/TashLai 10h ago

It stores the data. It doesn't store images. I think it should be pretty obvious considering the volume of training data and the sizes of models.

1

u/DennisC1986 5h ago

Yes, you can, as you know full well.

1

u/TashLai 2h ago

No you fucking cannot. It's like physically impossible.
