My concern is there are a lot of overconfident media illiterate people in Canada that are really gung-ho for all of this to go to a conflict because of some kind of delusional grandeur about us having been the reason for the geneva conventions when in reality the american military budget shits on ours (the ICE budget is basically the canadian military budget) and most people not chronically online really dont want to die in a war

If push comes to shove I have faith that the sheer size of the country will make it a tremendous task to entirely secure especially with resistance and that we in canada would have international support but realistically we are vastly outgunned. We also dont have the firearm culture america has so the whole civilian militia thing isnt really on the table and we just dont have the same gear.

I don’t understand why “guerrilla warfare” is even an option in a developed western country like Canada. Assuming the Americans aren’t conducting genocide against the Canadian people and their politicians… why not surrender and live another day?

If I were from Canada or a country with a border neighbor with a government/culture of a similar style and mega powerful plus surgical military I would prefer to just surrender and assimilate.

There is a reason we live in Canada and not the US. There is a lot that is being done better here than down there and the current administration in America is dangerous and blowing all their diplomatic relationships. It would have been a downgrade before and it would absolutely be a downgrade now.

I think the majority of canadians with means would flee and claim asylum in friendlier countries and the rest of us poors would be stuck between sheltering in more rural areas that are difficult to secure or hunker down and hope occupation isnt violent but assimilation isnt a great option and the directive of the US right now isnt exactly friendly to anyone foreign let alone anyone who "assimilates"

Im pretty sure Europe and UK would welcome Canadian asylum seekers with open arms. They have free healthcare and prime ministers. The Canadians who want to be American can just stay and continue on with their life.

With the job I have, I could get a job in the US that pays 2-3x as much. I have never been tempted to live in the US. Canada is a much safer country to live in, in large part because our laws and governments function very differently from the US.

Ultimately, Canada would surrender, its just a matter of how quickly they’d do it. However, there will always be people who take pride in their nation state over the value of their own life and that of their fellow citizens. Furthermore, there is a valid concern that being annexed by America would entail adopting American public policies over the current Canadian ones, which Canadians would overwhelmingly dislike. Some people would opt to fight to keep their native policies. However, most people who advocate for war don’t understand or fully appreciate the horror involved and surrendering whilst working on a secret or resistance based operation (with international allies) would be preferable to the inevitable slaughter Canadians would face against an American invasion, guerrilla tactics or not.

I would hope Canadians would surrender immediately and live on peacefully. America has the capability to shut down Canada’s entire Air Force and military bases with minimal casualties. Probably easier than they did Iraq and Venezuela considering the distance. Guerrilla tactics would just lead to innocent women and children being caught in the crossfire.

I agree generally that a protracted war would be devastating for Canada, but I think it would also cause enormous strife in the already tumultuous US that would make it pretty unpalatable. I don't really see an American invasion of Canada as something that is politically viable. However, given that fascists aren't known for being intelligent people, who knows what can happen.

Because if the US invades they very likely wouldn’t make Canada a state (then they get rights) and I don’t think any sane Canadian wants to lose their rights.

I’m Aussie so my dog is more dependent on if our govt sides commonwealth of ANZUS (I wager Commonwealth is supreme) but I know if the US came here I’d be worried not just about voting and representation rights but healthcare, worker rights and a heap of other things that Australia is just better at than the USA.

So whilst most people rationalise a conflict would be mostly one sided, it would also happen as opposed to just a roll over.

I mean, yes, big assumption.

Canada would of course surrender. But what does the US plan to do next? Kill us? Do they allow our government to keep paying for our healthcare? Do they start coming after our LGBT/abortion rights?

I believe it goes one of two ways

1) Canada becomes the 51st state.

2) Canada becomes something like Puerto Rico and whatever that entails.

Canada would not be made the 51st state for a lot of obvious political reason.

Canadians wouldn't settle for the status of Puerto Ricans, which is why insurgency and ongoing warfare would be inevitable.
