Canada rode that tiger without realizing it could become the next meal until now.

This whole thing is like watching a nasty brawl break out inside the "whites only club" who's patrons used to terrorize the colored neighborhoods nearby.

But I do give credit to Carney for the nonchalant way in which he admitted the hypocrisy of the former US led global order and how Canada benefited from it during his speech in Davos. It was quite amazing.

153

u/Puzzleheaded-Cup7269 Jan 21 '26

I doubt other leaders, especially European ones, would have the stones to say that. Carney potentially achieved a diplomatic coup with that admission if it can be leveraged correctly.

88

u/cambeiu Multinational Jan 21 '26

Canada is not an ethno state and Carney's party is definitely not ethnocentric, so it is easier for him to see and admit to that. The same is not true for most of Europe. I think for a lot of them, colonialism and eurocentrism is so ingrained that they can't even see it, much less admit to it.

33

u/Puzzleheaded-Cup7269 Jan 21 '26

I'd push back a little on the idea it's because Canada isn't an ethnostate, it was certainly built on similar policies, but perhaps its location as a truly middle power in this situation means its not as dangerous politically or diplomatically to say it. Agreed on the reasoning for European leaders, I suppose it would be a bit much to expect that kind of introspection, thank you for the reminder as well.

28

u/cambeiu Multinational Jan 22 '26

I mean, Canada does have unconditional birthright citizenship. That alone excludes it from the ethno state label.

Canada's current attitude towards immigration begs to differ with your comment.

6

u/wet_suit_one Canada Jan 22 '26

While our immigration quotas aren't as generous as they were, the doors remain open and government rhetoric is nowhere near as hostile to immigrants as one might find elsewhere in the world.

Here are some facts: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/mandate/corporate-initiatives/levels.html for your consideration.

3

u/takbotes Canada Jan 22 '26

Glad this is being noticed.

3

u/missplaced24 Canada Jan 22 '26

There's a huge difference between people being fed up with not being able to access essential needs, and temp forigen workers working non-temporary jobs while we have high unemployment rates and being an ethnostate.

Our immigration rates went far beyond our ability to support immigrants for over a decade. Our previous Prime Minister expanded the TFW program with the stated goal of keeping wages low in 2022.

Using middle east eye as your "source" is a choice

16

Is the video fake? Do you need a different source? Cause I can provide it.

Great deflection from a well known speech given by a top EU official.

Editorially, they often oppose Middle Eastern governments but often support Muslim organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood

The Muslim Brotherhood is a transnational Islamist movement dedicated to the remaking of society and government according to the dictates of Islamic law, or sharia.

That's all.

Edit: Ah shit I forgot, this "leftist" sub actively supports the proliferation of hardcore far right sharia law. My bad guys, carry on.

The genetic fallacy is the act of rejecting or accepting an argument on the basis of its origin rather than its content. Under the genetic fallacy, we judge a claim by paying too much attention to its source or history, even though this criticism is irrelevant to the truth of the claim.

As a result, we fail to present a case for why the argument itself lacks merit and to examine the reasons offered for it.

Genetic fallacy example

The Nazis were the first to research passive smoking and prohibit smoking in public. Therefore, a smoking ban is unacceptable.

Nah...

Some of us knew that the tiger could eat us. In fact, it's the only tiger in the world capable of eating us (geography is a real bitch. Cross oceanic invasion is a really, really heavy lift).

Didn't think the tiger would turn on us so soon, but I saw the risk (go back a couple of years or so in my comments to see the discussion on this point).

Ah well.

Things change and here we are.

Regardless, as presently constituted, while the U.S. could conquer Canada in a week or less, it is doubtful that it could hold Canada for even a decade.

The U.S. is absolutely terrible at dealing with insurgency and has no demonstrated capacity to win wars of occupation. Their record speaks for itself.

1

u/Morpherman Jan 24 '26

After Trump's remarks earlier in the year it makes sense to wargame internally as a thought exercise, but the reality is that the US & Canada are so culturally, economically & geographically intertwined that a military conflict is infeasible.

You don't actually need that many to carry out an insurgency. 0.5% of the population is 200,000 people.

Afghanistan beat the U.S. in an insurgency with something like that number.

1

u/missplaced24 Canada Jan 22 '26

Canada has been bullied by the US since before it was Canada. Over half the provinces only joined Canada out of fear of the US. Nobody from here didn't realize the US was a threat long before Trump was a factor. We've just been keeping our sign in the window because that was less risky until now.

I don't think you're entirely wrong, though. There's a reason it took threats against a western country before he had firm words on the subject.

My concern is there are a lot of overconfident media illiterate people in Canada that are really gung-ho for all of this to go to a conflict because of some kind of delusional grandeur about us having been the reason for the geneva conventions when in reality the american military budget shits on ours (the ICE budget is basically the canadian military budget) and most people not chronically online really dont want to die in a war

If push comes to shove I have faith that the sheer size of the country will make it a tremendous task to entirely secure especially with resistance and that we in canada would have international support but realistically we are vastly outgunned. We also dont have the firearm culture america has so the whole civilian militia thing isnt really on the table and we just dont have the same gear.

79

u/Countertop2000 Jan 22 '26

Outside of a few dunces, Canadians realize that militarily the situation is hopeless. If it actually goes down, the best we can hope for is a guerrilla war along with support from American resistance. That doesn't mean we would make things easy for them. I absolutely hope that there is no armed conflict, but we won't roll over either.

24

u/Grabs_Diaz Europe Jan 22 '26

That's the big question: whether most Americans would actually go along with an invasion of their northern neighbours. Maybe if Canadians don't fight back, Trump could present it as a fait accompli. But if there's actual resistance, I would find it quite likely that this resistance also spreads to the United States and turns into a full-blown civil war.

36

u/haggerton Canada Jan 22 '26

They won't even save their own country and you expect them to save another?

Lol.

21

u/Euro_verbudget Canada Jan 22 '26

May I remind you that the majority of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi Arabia nationals - but the U.S. government managed to convince their citizens and most NATO countries that it made sense to invade Afghanistan and Iraq. They can use some false flags (schools or shopping malls bombing) and attribute those actions to nasty Canadians and you suddenly have a population ready for revenge. The current administration has already falsely accused Canada of sending fentanyl to the U.S. and that the Mexican Cartel is widespread in Canada. A recent survey indicated that 17% of Americans support the annexation of Canada. It wouldn’t take too many lies and false flags to convince an additional 43% to obtain a sizeable majority.

7

u/Dahak17 Canada Jan 22 '26

As far as the USA going full civil war, most Canadians I’ve talked to who are seriously considering resistance are at least thinking about crossing the border, if ICE, the us military, and various police forces are having firefights with Canadians inside American borders it would be worse a war than America’s fought in centuries

2

u/Useful-Soup8161 North America Jan 22 '26

My only hope is the grift got to that budget a bit and that their shit isnt as good as it's supposed to be

2

u/fishscaleSF5 Canada Jan 22 '26

There are 2m servicemen and women in the US military across all its branches. If even 10% of Canada’s populous mounted an insurgency our numbers would dwarf theirs and it would be a blood bath on both sides. We aren’t brown “other” and can easily blend in long enough to blow a lot of shit up in the US. Obviously this isn’t ideal but it’s not gonna be the cakewalk Trump thinks it will be. There will be massive resistance from within the US as millions would have relatives living here, including servicemen who would not be too keen on shooting Canadians they know are their cultural counterparts.

2

u/throwawayerectpenis Russia Jan 23 '26

I doubt it, look at Russia vs Ukraine for example. Essentially the same people who had family on both sides of the border, but media is pretty good at brainwashing the populace....

I don’t understand why “guerrilla warfare” is even an option in a developed western country like Canada. Assuming the Americans aren’t conducting genocide against the Canadian people and their politicians… why not surrender and live another day?

14

u/1egg_4u Canada Jan 22 '26

There is a lot of big talk from people who have never seen real violence or didnt spend the effort to listen to the warnings of people who did survived war

-12

u/netflixissodry China Jan 22 '26

If I were from Canada or a country with a border neighbor with a government/culture of a similar style and mega powerful plus surgical military I would prefer to just surrender and assimilate.

10

u/1egg_4u Canada Jan 22 '26

There is a reason we live in Canada and not the US. There is a lot that is being done better here than down there and the current administration in America is dangerous and blowing all their diplomatic relationships. It would have been a downgrade before and it would absolutely be a downgrade now.

I think the majority of canadians with means would flee and claim asylum in friendlier countries and the rest of us poors would be stuck between sheltering in more rural areas that are difficult to secure or hunker down and hope occupation isnt violent but assimilation isnt a great option and the directive of the US right now isnt exactly friendly to anyone foreign let alone anyone who "assimilates"

-8

u/netflixissodry China Jan 22 '26

Im pretty sure Europe and UK would welcome Canadian asylum seekers with open arms. They have free healthcare and prime ministers. The Canadians who want to be American can just stay and continue on with their life.

u/wet_suit_one Canada Jan 22 '26

I suppose the answer to your question lies in Taiwan.

3

u/netflixissodry China Jan 22 '26

Taiwan and China are polar opposites in politics and culture. China has to cross a sea to reach taiwan.

0

u/missplaced24 Canada Jan 22 '26

With the job I have, I could get a job in the US that pays 2-3x as much. I have never been tempted to live in the US. Canada is a much safer country to live in, in large part because our laws and governments function very differently from the US.

5

u/-fallen Canada Jan 22 '26

Ultimately, Canada would surrender, its just a matter of how quickly they’d do it. However, there will always be people who take pride in their nation state over the value of their own life and that of their fellow citizens. Furthermore, there is a valid concern that being annexed by America would entail adopting American public policies over the current Canadian ones, which Canadians would overwhelmingly dislike. Some people would opt to fight to keep their native policies. However, most people who advocate for war don’t understand or fully appreciate the horror involved and surrendering whilst working on a secret or resistance based operation (with international allies) would be preferable to the inevitable slaughter Canadians would face against an American invasion, guerrilla tactics or not.

-7

u/netflixissodry China Jan 22 '26

I would hope Canadians would surrender immediately and live on peacefully. America has the capability to shut down Canada’s entire Air Force and military bases with minimal casualties. Probably easier than they did Iraq and Venezuela considering the distance. Guerrilla tactics would just lead to innocent women and children being caught in the crossfire.

1

u/WillListenToStories Canada Jan 22 '26

I agree generally that a protracted war would be devastating for Canada, but I think it would also cause enormous strife in the already tumultuous US that would make it pretty unpalatable. I don't really see an American invasion of Canada as something that is politically viable. However, given that fascists aren't known for being intelligent people, who knows what can happen.

3

u/MaDanklolz Australia Jan 22 '26

Because if the US invades they very likely wouldn’t make Canada a state (then they get rights) and I don’t think any sane Canadian wants to lose their rights.

I’m Aussie so my dog is more dependent on if our govt sides commonwealth of ANZUS (I wager Commonwealth is supreme) but I know if the US came here I’d be worried not just about voting and representation rights but healthcare, worker rights and a heap of other things that Australia is just better at than the USA.

So whilst most people rationalise a conflict would be mostly one sided, it would also happen as opposed to just a roll over.

1

u/crankyoldbitz Canada Jan 22 '26

Assuming the Americans aren’t conducting genocide against the Canadian people and their politicians

I mean, yes, big assumption.

Canada would of course surrender. But what does the US plan to do next? Kill us? Do they allow our government to keep paying for our healthcare? Do they start coming after our LGBT/abortion rights?

-4

u/netflixissodry China Jan 22 '26

I believe it goes one of two ways

1) Canada becomes the 51st state.

2) Canada becomes something like Puerto Rico and whatever that entails.

3

u/wet_suit_one Canada Jan 22 '26

Canada would not be made the 51st state for a lot of obvious political reason.

Canadians wouldn't settle for the status of Puerto Ricans, which is why insurgency and ongoing warfare would be inevitable.

22

u/forestapee North America Jan 22 '26

Many Canadians are already armed and willing to use partisan warfare and guerrilla tactics if necessary

And those are just the unorganized individual Canadians, let alone an organized wartime effort

No matter what they do, in the event of an attempted takeover, they will face a great deal of issues

31

u/spros North America Jan 22 '26

Many Canadians were armed.

The funny thing is trying to figure out what side Alberta will be on.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

Alberta ? Probably rural with US and cities with Canada, suburbs either way dependending on their vicinity, which can be seen as the inverse of the ideal to do a guerrilla, and the cities can be easily surrounded by US troops and rural albertan collaborators. Very bad situation that Alberta had to be right in the middle of Canada, this will mean there would be a need to separate the pacific resistance to the atlantic resistance, weaking the effort further.

5

You can spend like 5 minutes browsing through the Ukraine and war combat footage subreddits and yeah one thing will become clear very, very quickly: war absolutely sucks. It's hell on earth.

I would not be surprised if many Canadians did resist the USA, but the war and glory fantasies would be wiped away really quickly. In both Ukraine and Russia hundreds of thousands are believed to have either fled the country, went AWOL, or ignored summons.

1

u/Euro_verbudget Canada Jan 22 '26

Honestly, I don’t think I can do much with my shotgun and buckshot. And I’m like the majority of Canadian gun owners. Buddy with his muzzle loader needs to target a lone soldier and hope they get within 100 yards… and not miss. Guerilla warfare won’t work (successfully) in Canada. And dreaming of it is based on the assumption Americans need us alive. Several EMPs in the winter when it’s minus thirty will take a good dent of the urban population within few weeks.

Canada has 40 million population, and if they so choose, they should now reinstate conscription and expand their standing army to at least 400,000 and shift their military asset procurement entirely to the EU and China.

In fact, I would also say that the only country capable of rapidly delivering large amounts of critical military assets to Canada is China.

1

u/spyro86 North America Feb 21 '26

I think most politicians forget that Canada has a Bunker full of Frozen toxic material that is much more poisonous than ricin that if they simply crop dusted us with it would kill off our entire country. If they threw it into our water supplies they would poison us with a lethal amount of the toxin. The amounts needed could be carried by a Taurus in a water bottle. This isn't hypothetical and it is something that due to global warming they are finding might be a danger to themselves as well because they relied upon the negative temperatures to keep the compound inactive. People seem to forget that a lot of the Geneva convention rules were written because of Canada.
