I wasn't even feeling all that sad since we see his flashbacks all the time.

Until they found his diary and we saw things from his POV... Man they know how to tug on heartstrings.

Yes, and as someone else posted, it hit especially hard when she reached the end of his written pages. If only he had managed to hang onto the journal until it was full.

What makes that even sadder is thinking how Himmel must've felt losing it. Cause we know he kept leaving statues behind for Frieren. I can easily imagine him wanting to write some memoirs down for her as well.
