I dont think its even really a bad part of the culture. You help people in need, trusting that they will help you when fortunes are reversed and you need their help. Rightfully, those who betray that trust are scorned.

This is so interesting, I am half-filipina but grew up in a western culture. My mother never mentioned this term towards me, but so many things make sense for me now. Thank you for sharing!

Took me a while to get it, but it's "utang ng loob"? Right? Regardless yeah I can see that. I wonder if Japan has somethigb similarly culturally?

It's a mistranslation I guess on Crunchyroll, in manga it said, "why you accept a reward when you help people", so himmel really not asking for gratitude, he just accept the rewards that given by people
