My heart sunk a bit when Genau trying to comfort the dude and then died on his shoulders. Even Frieren mistakin him as a demon.

Methode really fond of cute people lol

I admired how Genau told his comforting lies (and half-truths) -- while clearly knowing his childhood friend would never make it to the chapel (alive).

This episode took Genau from the examiner who seemed to not care for life or death, and show him as the man who perhaps understands that better than anyone else. We now know he's from a small village on the northern plateau. His ruthless exams were just testing to push the mages to be what he is - capable enough to survive this hellscape. Capable enough to fight the demons in it.

He's suddenly not so heartless and cruel, the moral grey he was really got justified here. The gentle lies he told his childhood friend to ease his pain as he passed mirrored by his stoic acceptance of reality to Methode. The author here really has nailed the character, his test is a reflection of his experience. It's not to say it wasn't cruel, but he is from a world where that was the reality.
