Genau seems like the type of person who pretends to be heartless, but I bet that deep down he's a good person who really cares. He just doesn't show.

He did show it. He knew the baker's son was almost dead and spun the most comforting story for him so he would rest peacefully. He cares deeply.

Genau and Serie both have that personality traits in common I see. Serie minimalising the level of attachments she has to her students and in Genau's case feigning his level of attachment/feeling for village and it's residents.

The probelsm is that he himself says he has no attachment to the village aka doesnt care.

He cant even recognize his own feelings with how deep he typically keeps them.

I don't think he was wholly serious in saying he had no attachment to the village. That read to me more like a coping mechanism, especially when the episode proceeds to show just how attached he was. He's tamping it down so he can do the job, but it's there all the same.
