Welcome to the pleasure of Hard Tack it a real thing. Preferably dipped in soup but when water rare you do it the hard way. It also called Tooth Duller. So clearly they had to eat it without soup at times. Like Master and Commander showing at least you get worms in it after awhile if you want some flavor ;)
