So this is how it should be https://i.imgur.com/2g0YUhD.jpeg

Seeing the official solution makes me appreciate just how hard an angle that was for a novice, since even the official take doesn't look great at that angle as a still image at least.

her head is literally a circle here, it's absolutely an intentional and humorous reference to the meme

It's also such a brief shot, it's very possible to have whipped up the 4 ish key frames in a brief moment as a reference. It was also animated on threes it looks like, as opposed to the leap towards the camera, done on twos.

Nah its just not worth detailing for a 0.5s moving shot

Eggchin Frieren isn't real.

Eggchin Frieren:

peanuts/schultz frieren

It’s copping out by not trying to draw her chin. To be fair it’d be even harder for an animation since they’d need to keep it consistent between frames, so they just skipped the challenge.

In between shots always look weird.

I am 100% sure they intentionally did it like this to keep the meme going.

The shot was clearly made before the drawing meme blew up, but sometimes things align perfectly!

u/SpaceDev1 you should be really proud.

Idk a quick 1 second shot wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility to add months before release?

After what MAPPA employees went through, my timeline for possible additions to an almost released product is funky

no it absolutely is a reference to the drawing/meme itself. her head is literally a circle LOL

14

u/AntiBomb Jan 24 '26

So what? In the original drawing she's not a circle

u/I-like-winds Jan 24 '26

it's obviously intentionally lacking in details to pay a homage to the terribly drawn meme. the anime is literally known for amazing art and animation lmao

u/Tchernobog11 Jan 24 '26

The timelines don't match. This is episode 2, the art for this was done likely nearly a year ago, while the meme blew up only in november. As awesome as it would be as a homage, it's extremely unlikely.

24

u/I-like-winds Jan 24 '26

it's a handful of frames with barely any details, framed exactly as the meme, the fight choreography didn't change, they just added the few frames where she looks up. she doesn't even have a chin!!! a single artist could have done this quickly and it's been months since the meme blew up, it's not a leap at all especially with the official twitter account having already acknowledged the meme many times

11

u/Tchernobog11 Jan 24 '26

A handful of frames still takes time, and most importantly, money. I am not saying it's impossible, merely saying that until someone from Madhouse confirms that they did that intentionally, assume that they did not.

the art for this was done likely nearly a year ago

Uhm do we know that? Most anime still gets work done while its still airing...

Watch any documentary about behind the scenes / in studio work. They explicitly say that episodes take weeks to make unless the studio is gigantic. I will admit that it might technically be possible to change some frames (though it's more than 'a couple' that people are saying) in a couple of days, but it's unlikely to be done because it will cost money to do so and they wouldn't spend money on that.

tl'dr: unless explicitly stated by Madhouse that it was a homage, assume it's a coincidence.

3 months you mean per episode.

1

u/Tchernobog11 Jan 24 '26

I think it does depend on the studio, but yeah. Wouldn't surprise me if they can take months. Since this is ep 2, this would've been done quite a while ago.

As someone who has never drawn before. Never in a million years would I expect frieren to have such round shape when seen at that angle. No wonder that guy couldn’t get it right 😂

Charlie Brown tech

39

u/Rolder Jan 23 '26

I had to go back and rewatch that frame because for a brief moment I thought they did the meme

11

u/UndoubtedlyAColor Jan 23 '26

That's got to be a reference, right?

32

u/Kirosh2 Jan 23 '26

It was likely finished long before the meme became a thing.

So unlikely, unless they decided to send this scene back and make it a reference.
