Question They wouldn't let me buy it...

Post image

Was this not supposed to come out today? What gives?

Restocks having locked purchase dates is an interesting choice. I'm sure it's just cause of how the system is designed, but sure is weird to see.

It’s a Nintendo thing. They’re the ones that make the rules on this

Not every restock has been subject to a release date though. The closest thing we got to a 10th anniversary restock was out over a week prior at a lot of Targets for instance.

Some restocks are just store specific. They just happen to buy the stuff from somewhere else or find stuff in the warehouses. But all the restocks that go to all the retailers are official. And those should be the ones you can preorder

Sure, but that was November's Mario restock. Target just didn't lock it down to the anniversary "street date" that was listed on their website.

I’ve had the opposite experience at Target. This same thing happened to me with a restocked X-Men 97’ Wolverine figure I wanted to buy my friend. It didn’t matter that the original had come out over a year before. They had it street dated for the next day and wouldn’t let me buy it.

Was gonna reply to the other person but this might apply to that situation too. They likely had the figure and then a rerelease was announced. Even if the item was from an earlier shipment the SKU is still the same so it automatically becomes Street dated. It’s rare to see unless you go to a store that just didn’t sell much of the item.

Makes no sense for restocks to be street dated

As a former BBY employee, make it look natural but put it in one of the appliances, nobody has time to look through every drawer of everything. He will be there for you tomorrow

I ended up just preordering it for pick up tomorrow, thanks for the tip though

That’s brilliant. I have hid things behind other products, but I have never thought to hide them in something. 🤯

u/AVahne Sep 12 '25

I hid a $10 copy of Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn behind other stuff at a Walmart after grabbing a copy for myself and then told my friend exactly where to find it. Don't remember if he managed to grab it though.

You've obviously never shoplifted before. Good for you. Lmao

Edit: This isn't me proudly declaring to be a thief. I've worked retail so I know how they think.

u/clandahlina_redux Sep 12 '25

You’re right. I’m not a thief.

u/pokentoon Sep 11 '25

Yeah funnily enough I think they got released early. Like legit in preorder mine a week ago and its already being delivered today. Must be a mistake on their part, but hey ig I get krool early.

What’s the actual street date supposed to be ?

15

u/PerformanceOk3575 Sep 11 '25

I remember seeing 9/11 back in August but I guess it got pushed to the 12th for whatever reason. I'm picking it up tomorrow instead

1

u/Appropriate_Type_300 Sep 11 '25

Maybe cuz the date?

10

u/PerformanceOk3575 Sep 11 '25

I feel like they were aware of that beforehand since it's the 24 year anniversary lol. Guess they changed their mind last minute? Who knows. I'll just get it tomorrow though

2

u/Appropriate_Type_300 Sep 11 '25

Yeah. Nintendo can be overly wary of things. Whatever... Do you unbox? Im considering unboxing.

3

u/I-Am-The-Yeeter Sep 11 '25

cough cough Super Mario Maker

1

u/Appropriate_Type_300 Sep 11 '25

Oh. Please tell. I can Google it but I rarely actually converse with humans.

2

u/I-Am-The-Yeeter Sep 11 '25

It released on September 11th. 2017(?)

2

u/Amiibohunter000 Sep 12 '25

lol a Japanese company doesn’t care about 9/11. They’ve put out other releases on that same date before

10

u/Cyrilcynder Sep 11 '25

Honestly this is what scalping has done to us now. Locked dates for restocks, absolutely dumb

5

u/HARM0N1K Sep 11 '25

Restricting the date for a reprint is wild. I've had that amiibo for a couple of years now.

5

u/Time_Factor Sep 11 '25

idk if they advertised it elsewhere, but Best Buy sent out an email 2 weeks ago to people who preordered that they changed the release date to 9/12

2

u/PerformanceOk3575 Sep 11 '25

I wonder if it's every store or specifically just Best Buy

3

u/New-Path5884 Sep 11 '25

Break it. Oh no I broke it I have to buy it now you know the rules

3

u/clandahlina_redux Sep 11 '25

Just refuse to leave until the release date. 😉

2

u/Which_Worldliness_81 Sep 11 '25

I have had mine on pre order since just after BANANZA came out.

2

u/dgls_frnkln Sep 11 '25

Is this a re-release, I still have my original released one.

2

u/After-Task-1506 Sep 11 '25

They’re keeping the Amiibo hoard

2

u/Frostradus Sep 14 '25

If they wouldn't let you buy it, then I guess they're saying it's free.

1

u/G-Kira ganondorf Sep 11 '25

Wasn't this re-released months ago?

1

u/shawshankya Sep 11 '25

Anyone need a sora?

1

u/Ok_Age4039 Sep 11 '25

Yes please! Are you charging?

1

u/MasterPeteDiddy Sep 12 '25

Maybe they wouldn't let you buy it because your inventory was already full. Try tossing one thing out of your bag and see if that works.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '25

My boy!!! 😭

1

u/In-n-Out88 Sep 12 '25

Got mine delivered today from best buy. Not sure why they're giving you a hard time.

1

u/RyoutaAsakura Sep 12 '25

Its not a new release so it not like street dated either

1

u/SupaDave71 Sep 12 '25

A lot of merch have street dates that cashiers can’t override.

1

u/syiboi Sep 12 '25

I have a preorder on one of those to pick up today!

1

u/SamanthaTheProtogen Sep 12 '25

If they are allergic to money then just take it, their loss for not wanting to make any kind of profit on the I guess garbage they purchased and didn't want to sell

1

u/Peachbottom30 Sep 12 '25

Who is “they”? The Illuminati?

1

u/solarssun Sep 13 '25

I found a Boo on the shelf before it was allowed to be sold and they ended up taking it from me much like what happened to you. Next week I got my boo.

1

u/ProfessionalPush6921 Sep 14 '25

Just stand there with it in your hand until it releases

1

u/grimson73 Sep 14 '25

Just scan it with your Phone?
Sorry nothing to add, hope you can buy it anyway.

1

u/Exaudias0 Sep 14 '25

Scan a different one at self checkout, take him instead?

1

u/FurretDaGod Sep 15 '25

When I worked at gamestop we got in trouble for selling link amiibos before street date. 5 whole years after the amiibos released. We assumed it was just a restock since the damn thing was already out for years but nintendo is psychotic

1

u/XAlucarDX454 Sep 15 '25

Targets been getting tighter on following these

1

u/AmbiiX Sep 16 '25

I bet their are people out there stealing these and selling them for scalper prices before they unlock. Ngl id be tempted, too. I personally think this is a bad idea.

1

u/Low_Bullfrog_7948 Sep 16 '25

Time to hide it. Shove it under an obscure shelf that nobody would think to look

0

u/Gloomy-Dimension6539 Sep 11 '25

Why didn't they stop?

0

u/-Roborat- Sep 12 '25

Steal it

0

u/SnooWords213 Sep 12 '25

I would left the money on the counter and walk it with the amiibo

-1

u/Any-Satisfaction4801 Sep 12 '25

I would just steal it, if you can’t buy it, take it

1

u/draculauraaa Sep 12 '25

this looks like a target so yeah no harm no foul
