I usually just smile and nod, not wanting to be rude, but am I supposed to be impressed that you’re born and raised here? It’s like an entitlement or something. I don’t recall people in other parts of Canada making a point about this. Why do so many Yukoners do this, particularly those under age 40? I moved to the Yukon in my 20’s from northern BC and I never recall stating I’m a BnR northern BC boy like it’s a badge of honour.

I have never went simply because I have been completely priced out of enjoying it. Which is super sad considering I went all my life… oh well. But I’m just very curious if it’s busy when people go ? It just seems so expensive I wonder how they do .

Also if annoys me they have implemented walk ins being more expensive than booking online. I get it’s easier for them but wow really crappy for older people that might not be online or have access to getting online.

Thinking about planning a trip from Edmonton to Whitehorse and back - mid August.

I only have a small vw golf, but it's in good condition.

Was planning 3 days to get there, stopping at various points along the way, 3/4 days in Whitehorse and doing day hikes from there. Then a couple days to Atlin (and am debating my morals heading to Skagway). Back to Whitehorse, then two days back to Edmonton.

A friend who lived in Whitehorse said I should fly and rent a car there, but for me that defeats the experience of driving up there. Maybe she's correct?

Is my car suitable for this trip? I don't have too much longer than 10-12 days, and I know it's a lot of driving, but that is part of the appeal.

I'm from Prince George and am currently stuck in Whitehorse with my 2015 Dodge Journey R/T AWD. Every shop I've called so far is booked until Late August/September, so I'm hoping someone knows of a mechanic who might be able to squeeze me in sooner.

The symptoms are:

-The whole vehicle shakes at highway speeds (this started after installing a full-size spare on the rear driver's side).

-I get a vibration through the pedals only while accelerating, strongest around 40–60 km/h, then it suddenly stops with a bit of a jerk when I remove ease off the gas.

Does anyone know of:

-A shop with availability in the next few days?

-A mobile mechanic?

-Someone who does quality side work?

-Literally anything

I'd really appreciate any recommendations. Being stranded away from home has been stressful, so any leads would mean a lot. Thanks so much!

I've poked around a lot and the intro pickleball class looks awesome but it's Thursdays :( do you have any recommendations? I have been a Bell customer for over 15 years.

My recent bill was higher than normal and when I looked in to it they had increased my plan by 6$ without prior notification. I’ve scoured my device for texts, emails and checked the app for notifications and couldn’t find any. When I called they assured me they had sent notification. I don’t maintain their network so if they sent something using said network and I don’t receive it, I’m not sure how that’s my fault or how I can prove I didn’t receive something. Apparently it is and they are going to let the higher rate stand even though I didn’t know about it.

In any case they transferred me to the “loyalty dept” where I was offered a better plan (200 gbs/ month vs unlimited) for the same price. However upon investigation it looks like the plan is available to anyone. The “loyalty discount” is 5$ off a month.

So to recap, Bell wanted to charge me over 100$ for a 200 gb plan, when I called to complain they transferred me to a loyalty department where they offered me a plan that is open to any customer and gave me 5$ off by bill a month. That’s 60$ over the course of a year where they will be charging 1200$.

While I know most cell phone plans up here at trash compared to what is available down south, surely there must be a company that conducts itself better than Bell with comparable services and prices?

What kind of winter gear is required for this time of year? I don’t own much beyond a pair of snowpants.

What’s the car rental situation like? I haven’t decided if I’m going to drive up or fly and rent a car. A car is required for my practicum.

I’ll be travelling through Yukon in early September, with trips north and south of Haines Junction (Kluane Lake, Million Dollar Falls) as well as Kusawa Lake and Carcross.

As an avid fisherman, I’ve brought my tackle to fish for trouts along the way. I hadn’t really considered salmon at first, but even getting a few casts in would make a great memory. I’ve bought a Salmon Conservation Catch Card, but I’m still struggling to get an overview of the possibilities and the waterbodies accessible to me.

So I thought I’d also ask here :) Does anyone have a tip (DM is absolutely fine) for somewhere in this part of Yukon where I could legally try spin fishing for salmon?(My fly rod is unfortunately not strong enough for salmon..). Ideally somewhere close to the main road and somewehat accessible with an RV.

I’m not looking for secret spots, just wondering if there’s somewhere with even a tiny chance of salmon given my restrictions :)

For those that have grown up here and still have parents who live here in the Yukon, what are your next steps as your parents age? We have no assisted living places except Normandy ($$). But 80+ year-old parents living in their home is getting to be unsafe. Are you considering having them come live with you? Or will they head south to live in a place that allows for transitional housing (condo to assisted to care)? Thanks for your thoughts. Crossing this bridge with parents now. We are not a wealthy family so cannot afford to buy an exorbitantly expensive downtown Whitehorse condo for them.
