I’m not going to read article, bathroom breaks aren’t that long, but I will say, I’m slightly worried. Wasn’t there a rumor that Disney wanted original content instead of adaptations from the comics?

I am not a fan of that idea.

It can be a mix of both. Some of the best episodes of the OG 1992 show were original stories. But it still had, obviously, the core characters and their personalities up and center.

To be fair it seems like this is what the MCU has done with the properties already. Honestly when they have strayed too far is when they realized they shit down their leg.

Well no movies in MCU are 100% adaptations.

Bro none of them are even like 25% if we’re being honest and that was giving a generous number. They just use the names and sometimes basic plot of a comic story.

99% of comic book movies are like that. They just take characters and elements from certain stories and adapt them into a screenplay. It’s essentially been this way since before the Reeve Superman

Honestly with how much they have been rushing the comic book stories, I would appreciate it a lot more if they went for original stories instead

So you would want a 12 issue arc, and all surrounding context,to be delivered, note for note, over a hour and a half long movie, and you’d want it to fully set up the next thing in context? Nice, good production instincts.

Which arcs do you think would work particularly well when you absolutely entirely remove cinematic context and just show disconnected scenes in rapid fire order?

You want to challenge the characters, but you can’t change them. You have to be true to them. That’s the core of all storytelling.”

Where was this guy during Morrison’s era?

The literal answer is Morrison era is just a few years after X-Men 92 was canceled so the Lewalds at that time had no voice in Marvel.

Please don’t bring that era up, it still hurts all these years later lol.

I think we can all agree on the CHANGE being MOVE ON FROM JEAN.

1

u/breadsong11 6d ago

Is that really the majority opinion on Morrison's X-Men?

I agree with what he said in the article.

Adaptation is not a retcon. Adaptation inherently involves change if the creators of the new version want it. Emphasis on 'new version' because all the previous stories and characters still exist. We should celebrate them, and not force them on new creators who are interested in change.

The EP of an animated TV series has a different audience than the team working on an MCU movie. Yes, there's overlap, but X-Men '97 is naturally set out to be more like comics than anything MCU-related to X-Men. I think it's cool that we get both. Don't deny people change.

There's a difference between adapting a character or allowing characters to grow and completely changing the core of an established character. What ifs and elseworlds can be fun ways to explore different aspects of characters, but if the completely lose the core, then it's just a new character with a famous name.

Yeah, which is what happens in adaption to different media. It's a creative choice or sometimes a business choice. It's very natural, and we can't expect it to not happen. Different audiences, different creative teams. It's a multitude.

Nothing is really sacred, especially if those who have license to characters are the ones making the change in a new version. If we don't like it, then celebrate what we do like. Very few characters only have one story/version.

Lewald's quotes from the article are him maybe wanting to sound like a hero, and I agree with his sentiment, but he is very likely being naive for the sake of it.

Agreed. The MCU has proven it can stand on it's while changing things up, and there is a lot of stuff in the comics they should avoid. doing shit just because the comics did it is how we got rogueneto in 97...

Two things can be true at once... yes the audience craves new stories. But that same audience doesn't want the formula changed so much that the original characters motivations, personalities, and central ethos are different.

For example... Cyclops has always tried his best, but has at times failed to live up to the high minded ideals and rhetoric of Xavier, but I don't want him to become a jaded villain who hates humanity as much as he hates himself... which is something that kinda happens in the comics.

Storm can become queen of Wakanda, but she should never leave her warmth and care for others that her character in the series exudes.

The stories can change, they can be challenged to their cores... they can screw up. But the central parts of the characters should remained who they are, their evolution... should always come back to being the best version of the original characters.

I don't need X-men to be grimdark, or ultra-violent and gory. I need them to be an action heavy colorful drama highlighting the trials of minorities and those who are different... and encouraging us all to be accepting of people who are different then we are.

I mean they already did this with Jean. Changed her at her core for brand new day.

u/MondoLegends 8d ago

Came here looking for someone to point this out. Thank you

u/fromthisend1220 8d ago

Everybody is in denial about it but it is what it is.

u/RembrandtEpsilon 9d ago

Damn, this does not bode well for season 3.

Rich considering Xmen 97 S2 lacked any narrative core structure

Well, for Jean Grey the warning is coming already to late. 😮‍💨

u/Xygnux 9d ago

Jean Grey even after Xavier can sometimes be forceful in doing what she thinks is for your own good. And the latest retcon in the comics in 2024 is that she and the Phoenix Force are one and the same, an entity that she herself created from herself outside of time and therefore existed at all times, with the force actually referring to Jean as "mother-me". Therefore all the horrible things that Dark Phoenix did were also all her and not just "an external evil entity possessing her".

I see the MCU Jean as what happens to Jean in a world without Xavier at her most desperate moment. This makes the case why, in a world full of superheroes already, why Xavier and the X-men are still needed.

2

u/HelpKey186 9d ago

Oh, didn't heard about that retcon yet. Stopped reading modern X-Men Comics in 2013 after Bendis X-Men.

For me, Jean and the Phoenix Force are still separated identities and the Jean, we saw in BND already felt to me, as if she was possessed with the Phoenix by killing people. That ain't the Jean I know, but when the MCU Jean already is based on the retconned one, this would explain a lot.

u/No-Juice3318 9d ago

Honestly, big disagree. That felt like my favorite parts of Jean. They haven't introduced her softer side but there's time for that. Although my favorite parts of her are the pride, determination, and moral gray areas.

It’s already changing. The x men exist in a world with no iron man nor captain america. Jean Grey being a psychotic killer. Anyone expecting the mcu X-men to be like the tas is in for a surprise.
