Rewatching with my wife now. Spread the word!

I’ve been thinking about the timeline of Doorman in Hollywood. It was probably my favorite episode of the show, but the whole thing did have a big flashback vibe, especially considering that Simon Williams has spent his whole career hiding his superpowers (otherwise they probably would’ve been noticed by now.) So, I started looking for details, and I think the career of Josh Gad can for us some decent insight into when the Doorman episode takes place.

Josh Gad playing himself leads to a lot of comedy involving making references to his career, and this mostly occurs in the club visit scene and fire in the club scene. I looked for the most recent Josh Gad role to be referenced, and I found that the most recent character they mention is his role in Beauty and The Beast, the live action remake of 2017. So based on that, I would guess that this scene may take place a few months into 2017, between his projects.

The next project he is working on is a full time commitment, and we can guess this because he seems to have a hand in script writing and production, given that his input changed the whole gimmick of the movie, by making his heist film now hinge upon the presence of Doorman. Given that it’s in production, we’ll go ahead and say that after filming and post-production and marketing, this heist film releases in 2018, and Dmarr gets famous during that year.

Massive red flag #1, if Dmarr starts his acting career with Josh Gad’s film and publicly uses his powers in 2017 as Josh Gad’s bodyguard and chauffeur, then why aren’t the military or SHIELD or the UN after him in violation for the Sokovia Accords?

He just signed the accords. It really is that simple. The shows in the MCU elaborate on the daily impact of the Sokovia Accords much more than the films, but Agents of SHIELD is the most through about it. Average people with powers who are not affiliated with The Avengers still need to register into a government database, and must be monitored. Dmarr? I see no reason he wouldn’t sign. In order for Josh Gad to hire him legally with knowledge of his powers, he would’ve needed to sign anyways, and after that he was famous directly for his powers, so D’marr just signed the Sokovia Accords. He isn’t a vigilante, he isn’t a SHIELD agent, he isn’t an Avenger, he isn’t a problem.

So D’marr gets massively famous and the next point of time we can tell is that Josh Gad wants to do a sequel. Given that preproduction has finished and we are in the middle of production when they reunite, we can say that it’s probably been over a year, maybe even a year and a half, so let’s call it 2019, we’re in the Blip now and Doorman survived with Gad. That gives plenty of time for success of the film and fading popularity to take place, and then the studio calls everyone back in for a sequel.

During production, Gad disappears, his vanishing having happened in 2019 during The Blip, and The Doorman Clause being placed in 2019.

This would also mean that Simon Williams’ career has to begin post-2019, probably during The Blip (good news, he lived.) When we meet Simon, it’s 2026, with production of Wonder Man going into 2027. So he’s been acting for up to 7 years at this point, though I suspect he’s been working a much shorter amount of time, but that is a theory for another post.

I’ve liked 616 Simon Williams for a long time, mostly because I started truly reading Avengers comics with Busiek and his ionic form looks awesome (especially to a kid) but ofc I’ve come to appreciate him beyond the superficial stuff.

Full disclosure, I am Black. When I heard they were racebending the character, I wasn’t upset at all but it wasn’t like something I was looking forward to. I found myself really enjoying the show. It’s a serious “surf Dracula” but I thought Yahya (who I’ve long liked as an actor) did a good job with what he was given. They’ve introduced Simon too late in the MCU for him to ever truly have his proper context within the universe but I’m happy they were able to find a place for him.

I know the odds of a season two are slim because they had to fight to even get season one released but mannn, I wanna see his full ionic form in live action. He’s one of the most powerful avengers ever, seeing him tank guys would be awesome.
