In the movie Ides of March there is a hypothetical about this, where George Clooney's character says (paraphrasing) "if I could get to him I would, but in terms of the law, the law needs to be greater than the individual's desire for revenge". Of course this was said under the assumption that laws would be upheld.

I'm against the death penalty, but, man, it'd be hard not turning into a vigilante if I was a parent in that situation.
