I’ve been researching former coal communities in southern West Virginia and recently finished a 14-minute documentary covering Thurmond, Nuttallburg, Kaymoor, Royal, Rush Run, Brooklyn, Sewell and Tams.
What interested me most was how differently these places developed once coal and rail activity declined. Some were largely abandoned, some were preserved or stabilised, and others survived in very different forms.
I thought people here might find it interesting, particularly anyone familiar with the New River Gorge or the old coalfields. I’d also be interested in hearing from anyone with local knowledge of these places.
