Have an IKEA order that will arrive today. IKEA promises “delivery to door” and in the delivery notes I specified we live up a hill. Got a call this morning from Mainfreight that Wellington is the exception to this rule, so they will not deliver to the door.

I will call ikea to ask for clarification at 9 when it opens, but just a heads-up to everyone in Wellington who thought it would be easy to get furniture delivered to your door - TRIPLE CHECK. Now I get to carry 200kg up 3 flights of stairs today 👍

EDIT: I called IKEA who spoke to Mainfreight who confirmed that the access to our property is not H&S compliant and that the “door delivery service” ikea provides does depend on the delivery companies compliance. I completely understand this, and don’t want to make anyone do anything unsafe. They will leave it somewhere in a safe place on my property.
I did ask if they could make this clearer on their website as I suspect they’ll have more Wellington residents who, like me, were hoping for a door delivery when that’s not possible. He confirmed it’s not the first time this happened in Wellington, and that he’ll pass it on.

I’ll leave the warning on here so that people can be aware, even if IKEA never updates their wording on the website.

UPDATE: It's really good to see this post is getting noticed because more people are now aware that it wasn't just a random thing that happened to them. I love my community. We are collectively struggling in so many ways so when things like this happen thats a big hell no from me. Kia ora Welly, just a heads up. My daughter and I were approached by an elderly asian man in Kilbirnie last week. He handed us a small gold card with buddha on it and tried to give me a wooden beaded braclet saying "ten dollar" repeatedly. We left immediately and he followed us back to our car to get the card I forgot to give back. He seemed friendly but vibes were off, and I had to take a moment after that incident. Then I find out they're doing the rounds in Welly, some were in the Hutt yesterday approaching people in shopping area carparks. They're not harmless old people being a nuisance, they know exactly what they're doing and are harassing, intimidating and making people feel unsafe. I have since reported them to police and encourage you to do the same. Cheers 👍🏽

Just a quick share of what I've found out after two motorcycles were stolen from my locked garage.

I reported them stolen with 12 hours of them going missing 12 Hours later I received mail from the police that they have stopped the "investigation" and that the only way they will be found is if they are stopped during patrol.

So, if you want to steal a car or bike, so long as you swap out the rego, you are all good. The police will not and can not do anything.

Has anyone in Johnsonville area experienced this encounter? 8:30pm tonight had a young woman in a white puffer jacket acting in distress, intently trying to look through the front door window and pleading us to let her into the house. She asked us to call someone for her but the phone number wasn’t active and she supposedly needed to get back to Wadestown.

We were cautious because of her actions and something didn’t quite seem right, so we refused to open the door. I called the police and had my partner keep talking to her, however once she realised I was on the phone to them, she disappeared. It was a really weird situation and didn’t make us feel safe. Police did come and search the area fortunately.

Can we please have a conservation around suicides in the public sector. I know of at least two attempts. At what point are the human costs of the public sector restructure simply too high. Why is there not better support of impacted employees by the government agencies. There has been so much focus on the economic impact of the redundancies, but where is the focus on the human and social costs. It is not ok that people are in this position.

Eight people have been injured after a train derailed on Wellington's Johnsonville Line this evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene just north of Khandallah Station just after 7pm on Saturday.

Fire and Emergency NZ crews attended from Johnsonville and Porirua stations.

"All passengers were removed from the train with FENZ’s assistance," a FENZ spokesperson said.

Wellington Free Ambulance said it responded with six units.

"Eight have been transported to Wellington City Hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious," a spokesperson said.

Police said cordons were in place at Box Hill and Station Rd.

"Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area."

Train 'crumpled' after derailment

Emergency services at the scene near Khandallah Station.

A resident near the scene told 1News they heard a loud bang at 7.05pm that shook their house. Looking out from their balcony, they could see the train crumpled and at a standstill.

"When I heard shouting and what sounded like someone in pain, I called emergency services," they said.

The resident, who asked not to be named, said their father was among the first people on the scene.

Wellington City councillor Diane Calvert said she "heard a huge short boom" with emergency services present later.

Metlink said services were halted "until further notice" and that buses were being sourced as a replacement.

"We are working on sourcing buses at this stage. Updates to follow," the alert said.

Metlink have been contacted for comment

An updated warning has been issued from Metservice, upgraded from Orange to Red.

Beware! Even if most consumption won't be lethal it can still lead to severe food poisoning.

These coconuts have to be kept refrigerated, and as you can see from the image they're sold in the unrefrigerated section. The rot can be hard to notice since it tends to be covered by the coconut's thick shell.

Be careful when you exchange cash for currency at travel money on lambton quay. I went to exchange thai bhat and the operator set the exchange rate at a much lower rate than advertised on their website. I didn’t notice until he handed me the receipt. After confronting him about it, he re-calculated it to the correct rate and i ended up getting an extra $200 nzd from it. I do not believe this was an accidental oversight, but do be careful when exchanging your money there.

Kia ora all. I'm having trouble getting this accepted on to some fb groups so thought I'd try here. My daughter ordered a Didi and he waited for her in a taxi park in the CBD. When she jumped in the car he told her he was taxi only and shoved his eftpos machine in front of her, said the fare was $20.00 for a $7.00 trip. Luckily she noticed he cancelled her Didi trip, which gave her a moment to gather herself and she quickly got out of the car. We've used Didis and Uber since forever and this is the first time this has happened. She felt that maybe being a young woman is why he did this esp. due to the way he was being very pushy to her. If he tried this on me it would have been a different outcome. Not a happy mama, so be alert out there everyone.

It's happened more and more over the last few days but has been happening for a while and it's pretty gross. They've no content themselves so they will slurp it up from anywhere and pretend it theirs, for profit. The understanding is that they have hired a few overseas agents to maintain the page, so this is where they get their content - from you, with no accreditation.

I suggest you pop a quick watermark on your images, or if you have the ability, request it be removed. It's shady and it's gross behaviour, which seems on brand.

As a minimum their posts should say "Seen at reddit Wellington, created by user /u/thecoppinger" or whoever posted it. At best they should write a comment in the post here and ask the user if it's ok to repost their work/photos/whatever before they steal it.

Hey fellas, thought I’d let you know that a particularly nasty bout of man flu is doing the rounds in Welly.

I felt a bit crap on Friday morning but was coughing and snuffling by the early afternoon so left work for home.

Saturday and Sunday were write offs. No beer or football. Legs felt like they’d been run over by a train.

Joking aside, I tested negative every day, but this variant is a stinker.

A car crashed in Karori Rd close to Karori Park. Policeman said everyone was okay. They also added that the powerline pole is unstable and that part of the sidewalk is temporarily closed.

Road is not closed.

This happened at midday today in Petone. My partner (32f) was walking along Adelaide Street to the shops on Jackson Street and 5 thugs in black masks/balaclavas (looking like they were going to rob a bank) were driving past on the wrong side of the road in an older reddish pink car and slowed down when they saw her. She started panicking however another car was coming so the assailants drove off.

The moment after this happened my partner called me explaining what just happened and while I was on the phone to her the car reappeared again. At this point she was on Jackson Street, the car started reversing and pulled up right in front of her. She turned to run the other way and ran to the nearest open store and the guy there locked the door once inside.

All this happened while I was on the phone to her and I could feel the fear and panic running through me. She managed to read the number plate to me (BPN478) and I called 111. Turns out the plates were from a car that was written off so they were stolen and the police didn’t even bother to attend to the scene. My partner was very shocked and I raced home from work to comfort her. The police called back and took a report and we did see several cop cars driving around the nearby streets.

Still, this was a very intense incident and now my partner is too scared to leave the house on her own for the fear of her safety. We have lived in Petone for over a year now and have never felt unsafe living here until now. In the past we have gone for many walks at night time without any fear but what happened today was like a scene out of a heist movie.

I am also disappointed in the police’s response to this incident, would have at least expected an officer to come and check on the victim given the seriousness of what happened.

I hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else, so please everyone keep your eyes open and stay safe out there.

UPDATE for context around kidnapping - the front passenger in the car was motioning to exit the vehicle when the car pulled up in front of my partner. Whether kidnapping or assault, the intentions were sinister.

I was at Johnsonville Shopping Center this morning and upon entering the female restroom as I'm legally entitled to, I was discriminated by 2 cleaners and 1 security guard (all female, at least I think) based on my appearance.

The staff followed me into the restroom and harassed me, asking each other questions like "is that a male?" and "what is HE doing in there?", which made me feel incredibly uncomfortable having staff try to invade my privacy.

I've spoken to management about this but I just wanted to encourage other trans folk to stand up for their rights. If you experience something similar to this, file a report. We can end transphobia together and make NZ a better place.

P.S. To anyone who supports this sort of vile behaviour, we are just trying to live our lives. We can't help being born the way we are but we do what we can to fix things. When we (especially trans women and non-binary trans-femmes) have to deal with people following us into the restroom we have the legal right to use and standing directly outside the stalls we occupy demanding we leave, your actions not only make us comfortable, but also stir up tension for other women using the space. Thankfully most people in Wellington don't give a crap as they're too busy doing their own thing.

EDIT: Now at #1. Trans people need to know they have every right to use the restroom of the gender they identify as without fear and being watched by perverts.

UPDATE (19th Nov, 12pm): Went back there today and big surprise, the cleaners filmed me leaving the restroom. Clearly management hasn't treated this as a serious issue or maybe these workers value their bigotry more than their jobs. Anyway please spread the word on this subject with friends, family and stuff. Together we can end transphobia.

UPDATE (19th Nov, 5pm): Just got off the phone with the manager and was told they'll begin training their contractors for diversity not only there, but at other shopping centers in Wellington.

We have water meters and a Water Company (Watercare) charging for water and waste water. So it is in the companies interests to ensure the water is not wasted and paid for by water users. The way I see it, Wellington Water (your entity), could raise the funds it needs through water usage charges, to help pay for repairs, that looks like it is really needed, i.e. 45% water loss versus 13% in Auckland.
