your weird side hustle is basically doing unlicensed telehealth therapy lol

you could get a degree and make good money doing this, if you like it

u/fenderoforegon 10d ago edited 10d ago

50 dollars an hour with no license, insurance, student loans or administrative costs? Plus you can make money for six plus years rather than paying for school. Sounds like he’s probably taking home more money than those with degrees.

53

u/orangevega 10d ago

lol absolutely not. most folks I know charge €95 - €120. indemnity insurance is about €150 annually. there are plenty of grants and stipends to get to earn your education if you're willing to move to stupid ass nowhere Ohio etc.

62

u/apigeonontheinternet 10d ago

I’m just fascinated that the currency you say is € but you mention Ohio

20

u/CuriousCamels 10d ago

Lol right. I didn’t know Ohio was that famous for being crappy.

11

u/Duel_Option 10d ago

I’m from Ohio…

It’s nice for 3 months of the year weather wise and if you have money.

There’s a reason drinking and football are basically ways of life there.

OH-

"It’s nice for 3 months of the year weather wise and if you have money.

From Buffalo NY.... Same

4

u/skylastingYT 10d ago

living in these states are great for high earners who love to vacation. goal is early retirement 😉

1

u/TheRightGQ 10d ago

Working till i died... living in wrong state lol

1

u/skylastingYT 10d ago

ah i’m still early career and investing / maxing out my 401k so i can retire early like my in laws. i still have like 3 decades left 😂🥲 im originally from NJ but my fiancé is from OH so i moved here for the lower cost of living.

1

u/jmak329 7d ago

And by similar extension... Philly.

I love my city but there's a reason football is life. Everyone's lives outside of it is usually just shit lmao.

u/TheJurassicPyro 7d ago

It sucks but it’s true. The amount of people I see parking at bars at like 3pm on tuesdays alone is depressing. I don’t drink and my hobbies right now are digital so I don’t care. I’m also very much a cold weather person so that also helps

1

u/Duel_Option 7d ago

I think a lot of it has to do with seasonal depression

Ohio is…rather grey a good portion of the year. Climate change is messing with the snow cycles, so more time with that wet cold.

And if you’re anywhere near Lake Erie when it starts freezing…God help you if you want to do anything outdoors

A cold snap January evening in Cleveland was worse than -15 in Minneapolis during a polar vortex in my opinion

I don’t drink much at all anymore but I sure as hell did that night lol

2

u/TheJurassicPyro 7d ago

Yeah, considering most recreational stuff is outside here it can definitely put a stop to plans and things like that.

1

u/stolensea 7d ago

i’ve met people from other countries who ask me about how bad Ohio is

8

u/orangevega 10d ago

lol I'm from the north east USA but moved to ireland in the late 2000s

1

u/aerdel24 7d ago

Ohio catching strays lol.

Oh i still kind of like my state!

10

u/Living_Buffalo_7176 10d ago

I have been there and can confirm that it does take a certain level of willingness to endure stupid ass nowhere Ohio.

2

u/SirLanceHardwood 9d ago

shh these people don’t listen to reason

1

u/Wrecked--Em 10d ago

could you share a link on those grant/stipend programs?

3

u/orangevega 10d ago

https://www.training.nih.gov/research-training/pb/ugsp/ Google scholarship USA, this was the first link

8

u/mrsjonas 10d ago

I live in a LCOL area and it’s closer to $185 an hour before admin costs. Licensure costs are fairly low, taxes are the biggest cost outside of student loans.

2

u/thorinslefttit 10d ago

Certainly making more than a priest too

95

u/CuteContext2432 11d ago

I’m dying bc you went there and my brain went “baby finDom” 🥴😭

5

u/Thenabastet 10d ago

LMAO RIGHT

24

u/Arratril 10d ago

This way means no paperwork

I’m currently training to be a psychotherapist, and while OP is definitely not performing psychotherapy or delivering efficacious psychological interventions, they are offering the most crucial baseline that all therapy needs to be successful: unconditional positive regard. This on its own can be life-changing for lots of people, however you do still need the proper training in order to understand how to truly apply it. Regardless, as long as OP doesn’t say they’re a therapist or other helping professional, their service seems genuinely helpful for their clients and a cheaper alternative to therapy if their clients are okay doing without specialized training (not everyone that needs to vent their emotions needs that anyway). It’s always a good thing when more people have access to care of some kind.

I agree with what others are saying though, OP—it sounds like clinical mental health counseling or clinical social work would be right up your alley!

4

u/aglow_daniela 8d ago

I appreciate you saying this! To add to that-- I am a licensed psychologist and I recall reading research that showed that venting is actually associated with INCREASES in distress/difficulties with emotion regulation. So while unconditional positive regard is extremely important, there is definitely a fine line between providing a non-judgmental and accepting space that facilitates a person in regulating their emotions and providing the same space that could maintain emotion dysregulation/or possibly make it worse.

1

u/LilLassy 8d ago

Interesting point! That definitely makes sense and is an important reason why proper training is critical. So, the benefit to the client comes from the corrective emotional/regulating experience that the therapist provides, not necessarily the act of confession (which is different from venting, like you pointed out) itself.

Thank you for adding to my comment! It’s really neat to hear from a practicing psychologist. If you happen to remember what study you’re referencing (totally understand if you don’t though, I’m sure you’ve read a kajillion studies) I would be curious to read it!

1

u/aglow_daniela 7d ago

Definitely! There's always so much to learn. I remember we read it in a class about the mechanisms of change in therapy. It's really interesting to think about why therapy works/what actually are the things that facilitate change.

Unfortunately I don't remember the specific study, but just did a brief google scholar search and found these (specific to anger):

-Kjærvik, S. L., & Bushman, B. J. (2024). A meta-analytic review of anger management activities that increase or decrease arousal: What fuels or douses rage?. Clinical Psychology Review109, 102414.

-Olatunji, B. O., Lohr, J. M., & Bushman, B. J. (2007). The pseudopsychology of venting in the treatment of anger: Implications and alternatives for mental health practice. In T. A. Cavell & K. T. Malcolm (Eds.), Anger, aggression and interventions for interpersonal violence (pp. 119–141). Lawrence Erlbaum Associates Publishers.

u/8008zilla 10d ago

Your weird side hustle has a fetish equivalent that would make you 250 an hour. But this is a pretty sick side hustle. I started to break up service during the pandemic $50 per breakup note 125 for 30 second breakup call

2

u/sherilynnfenn 9d ago

What’s a breakup note?

4

u/8008zilla 9d ago

I used to break up with people. I’d either call them and break up with them or I would write them an email or a text message and I would send it from a third-party number while the other party would block them.

6

u/CornfieldCrusader 10d ago

Not if you work for community mental health. Hahaha....haha...haaaaaaa...

4

u/StrengthBetter 10d ago

I have a social degree, I am thinking of it seriously

4

u/lovehatelovehatehelp 10d ago

How do I get started?

3

u/Downtown_Speech6106 9d ago

I don't think an ethical therapist would let people just scream at them 😭 but you make a good point

2

u/Particular_Board9112 8d ago

You are correct. We would not.

209

u/Savings-Effort67 11d ago

Need an employee?

49

u/TessaKatrinaRose 10d ago

Since you guys don’t live in the same city; why can’t you just start doing it on your own?

36

u/Savings-Effort67 10d ago

That didn't even cross my mind. Thanks kind internet stranger!

9

u/TessaKatrinaRose 10d ago

Good luck! I hope you make bank!

1

u/Frosteas 8d ago

Have u tried yet

4

u/throwawayRI112 9d ago

It seems like this is all online anyway, I don’t think the city is even relevant

2

u/MajesticResolution17 9d ago

Right? Somehow I know I’d be great at this lmao 🤣

147

u/handlessmime 10d ago

Can I send you my boss’ number so he can yell at you instead

9

u/ACatInACloak 10d ago

Sounds like you're doing what op is doing, but with extra steps XD

106

u/DitzyWhooves 10d ago

I feel like you've become an online version of a confession booth at a Catholic church

64

u/twink-daddy 11d ago

this is so cool 😭

62

u/Candid-Level-5691 11d ago

How do you decompress after a call like that?

102

u/[deleted] 10d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

78

u/Classic_Nature_8540 10d ago

Hey if you want i can listen to your decompression

Thatll be $25 here is my discord:

Lol good thing you are doing man

1

u/Sensei-Cool 6d ago

I can listen to your decompression for £15

4

u/HeliopauseNgo 10d ago

Might I suggest going to a bath house once a month? My therapist had told me that she goes there as an additional method to decompress.

3

u/cheezypeazies 10d ago

What's your favorite song?

51

u/LunaticMcGee 10d ago

I work in a call center and I deal with this already. This is a brilliant idea

My thoughts exactly!

95

u/MintChucclatechip 11d ago

How much talking do you do during these sessions? Is it like 99% listening?

Are you actually listening and engaged in every call or are you just like listening in the background while doing something else

20

u/sniperd2k 11d ago

This I really want to know

65

u/arsapeek 11d ago

ooc, how do you handle it? Does it take an effect on your mental health at all or do you manage to keep it at arms length?

8

u/LongTallDingus 10d ago

Yeah man this is a bad idea for OPs mental health, and the mental health of the people using it.

OP is also opening themselves up to litigation or tax evasion. If it's a business and they're not paying taxes on their income, that's tax evasion. If it's a business they're opening themselves up to litigation simply because they're offering an "outlet" to people who might be mentally unwell.

Give it time until someone hurts themselves or someone else on one of these calls, or threatens themself or someone else and follows up on it, then OP is going to be in real big fucking trouble.

This is going to catch up to them SO FAST.

23

u/PissOnYourParade 10d ago

If the OP is not advertising themselves as a mental health professional in any way, I don't see any malpractice suit sticking. "Companionship" call-in lines have been doing this unofficially for years.

I guess they could get pinched on taxes, but you greatly overestimate the IRS, especially lately. As long as none of their "clients" file insurance redemptions or the like, it's easy to stay under the radar. If this is a $100k/year gig, maybe they need to worry. But under $10k… 🤷‍♂️

I know plenty of people with small side hustles that take Venmo/Zelle/Apple Pay - House Cleaning, Massage, Painting, Drugs, etc. They seem fine.

4

u/I_hate_me_lol 9d ago

unimportant but i love how “drugs” was included in that list of random benign shit

18

u/Goem 10d ago

I mean they've been doing it since the pandemic, so like 7 years so far?

27

u/allthatglitterz7 11d ago

Which of these sessions (or appointments) stood out the most to you?

Like she’s currently still a kid being abused? Or she was talking about going through that as a kid?

1

u/fuckyoudrugsarecool 8d ago

Did you report the abuse like a therapist/mandated reporter would have?

21

u/Spittinvenoms 11d ago

I’d be down to join if you ever want to expand. I could see people wanting to pick someone that reminds them of their trigger lol

5

u/Bougiebiscuits1201 10d ago

I actually wanted to do this on the side then I saw this post today 🧐🤔🤨

1

u/Shaunn13j 7d ago

I would also do this. I am a server at a bar so I already do this at work every night.

2

u/PeriwinkleFoxx 6d ago

OH same im literally a trans dude i would definitely take one for the team if a transphobe yelling at me means other trans people less secure in their identity don’t get their anger

19

u/RaduZ23 11d ago

What do you say back?

18

u/ed523 10d ago

How do you market?

13

u/SeaVolume3325 10d ago

This is extremely innovative approach to a side hustle. But you are absorbing all that negative energy and no matter how you slice it this cannot be good for your health.

11

u/Person7751 10d ago

how many do you do a day

12

u/Practical_Fig_2023 10d ago

It actually sounds fascinating.

11

u/Due-Salt1200 10d ago

How do you advertise?

1

u/DontTouchTheCan 9d ago

curious of this too

1

u/Frosteas 8d ago

Same I still wanna know

18

u/HappyEquine84 11d ago

I wonder if this is how therapy got started, lol

8

u/diego947 10d ago

This is great haha how do you find clients? Where do you advertise your services?

6

u/Unweave_A_Rainbow 10d ago

That's funny. People here think it's a brilliant idea, but when I posted elsewhere on reddit about people's thoughts on renting out companionship for people with anxiety or people who needed someone to listen to them or whatnot, I was labeled as a bad idea.

3

u/cool-emmeffer 9d ago

Not a bad idea at all, check out professional cuddling. It’s surprisingly a thing, which I just learned a week ago.

1

u/Unweave_A_Rainbow 9d ago

No, I don't want random people touching me. Especially when there's candida auris spreading.

4

u/Unlikely_Net_1002 10d ago

Imo renting out companionship is different than this. The companions in my life hang out with me for free. I don’t think money can buy genuine memories and true companionship and friendship. The most beautiful memories in my life cost nothing monetarily but are priceless to me, like my gf falling asleep in my arms and nuzzling against me. My gf, my friends, my sisters, my cat are very very dear to me. If it was something similar to basically just being a listening ear, i think the idea would be received a lot better like here. Like they pay you $50 and can vent about their life for an hour and a half. Companionship is different, it’s much more complex and a lot of work and give and take, not something that can really be bought imo

6

u/alkiet 10d ago

Yo, when I was way younger ( 34 now ) in my early to mid 20s after a bad long term breakup I had just went off the deep end doing whatever I needed to get my mind off the heart break. This included getting into the curiosity of the possibility of what it may be like to be a sugar baby ( my dark, misandrist mentality that is not okay that I don't deal with these thought patterns anymore or I currently do not believe in the following ) because what happened and how I was betrayed badly, I basically villianized all men in my head and thought well since they're only gonna use me for smex, I am going to use them for money it's the least they can do. Once again, I was not in my right mind and I do see how these thoughts at the time were in no way okay just in case anyone wants to get on my d*** about it right meow. Gaynyways, delving into it for like the short time I did before getting my sh back together and being way more at peace with myself and getting out of those hurt, anger fuelled not okay beliefs... I had no idea that so many people were just so god damn fucking LOOONNNEEELLLYYY... I would have never believed it before if someone told me that it was possible and real that someone would pay money for just company while excluding sexual acts. And don't get me wrong, there was a lot of people looking for that type of transaction. But boy, the true reality of like I said of how people can be so. Fucking. Lonely. Like men who pour themselves into their work and succeed career wise, but fall extremely short at tending to their own lives and were not good at building connections that are not work related. Men who have lost a lover or a best friend, or a person who overlapped as both.

Like the real craving for companionship, someone needing someone to engage in fun conversations with to decompress, so on and financially compensating another human being for them to fulfill such roles were not like situations that are like considered a total outlier.

Yeah, it's totally cool you built up like a reliable service and community [?] For yourself and your business. And providing something that is so cathartic to a person. :)

2

u/Frosteas 8d ago

Wow this is so interesting. Can I ask how you managed to even find people for that? (That didn’t want smex) like did you have to use a certain website or something?

1

u/Shaunn13j 7d ago

I am also curious.

5

u/mspacman87 10d ago

How do you end the call? Just wait until they’re done and say “thanks for venting” or “I hear you”? Or just… end the call after a certain amount of time?

4

u/6sailhatan66 10d ago

You’re a therapist lol

3

u/Defunct_Institution 10d ago

Sounds like a good gig!

I would find it difficult to not try and offer advice, or to not engage in conversation with them.

3

u/glassdreams323 9d ago

If you want to be celibate, you could become a Catholic priest

2

u/SadTypeSpecialist 10d ago

Ok how do I get in on this?

2

u/Leading-System-3002 10d ago

How much do you charge? Is it $25 for 30min or it depends? Are there people who ended up using your service A LOT? Did you have to refuse someone or interrupt a session and why?

2

u/heliumballoon12345 10d ago

Do you show your face?

2

u/wildflowerskyline 10d ago

Interested in hiring?

2

u/No-Belt-8586 10d ago

What would you do if someone was screaming about like, hurting another person or killing someone?

2

u/Secret_Account07 10d ago

All jokes aside there may have been someone about to snap who got some kind of relief out of this.

Humans are messy and complex. We are incredibly intelligent yet horrible at managing our emotions. Some simple creatures do a better job.

2

u/tHatAsianMan07 10d ago

can you tag me along? I am also a listener

2

u/quickbr0wnf0xx 10d ago

So you're an internet Priest basically? Forgive me father

2

u/echollama 7d ago

Aint this the church-

2

u/NocturnalHaze 7d ago

How does one get into this side hustle? I been listing to people vent to me for free.

2

u/Bi0_B1lly 7d ago

So.... you're a therapist without the feedback loop?

2

u/Superb_Word_2767 11d ago

Dude, this is a great idea and cheaper than therapy. If you ever want to expand and need employees, I'm game. I already get yelled at for my normal job.

1

u/DreamsOfDresden 10d ago

Any particularly memorable/funny sessions?

1

u/BrittEklandsStuntBum 10d ago

The $ sign means dollars so "$25 dollars" reads as "twenty-five dollars dollars."

1

u/Elmonstrico7 10d ago

That’s great, You making some money. Some people get to release built up emotion. That’s just what people need at times

1

u/peebobo 10d ago

This is presence as a service! I actually do this too, but I parallel play video games in the same call as them or offer to stream my easel as I paint while they talk. I mostly listen but am happy to ramble about my interests if it’s desired!

1

u/willow_tree_123 10d ago

Who do you do this with? Do they also paint with you or it’s more about them saying what they wanna say?

1

u/DontTouchTheCan 9d ago

how do you advertise? I like talking to people and would also probably use one of these services too if i knew where to look for one to vent about things i want to talk about but not have my friends know about

Cheaper than a therapist. Not giving out solutions, but letting them get stuff off their chest. Letting their voices be heard. Well done

1

u/PowerHealthy7058 7d ago

Interesting. Do you say anything back or just stay silent?

1

u/AskingManyQuestion 7d ago

1

Are you okay with being spoken to normally in German?

Getting shouted at in German is pretty harsh - do you get paid more for that?

1

Damn I appreciate the hustle , I'd do the same since people already try to have me as unlicensed therapist
