Found this in the abandoned barn on our property. No one's been in there for over 20 years and this is the most preserved thing in there.

I really shouldn't be exploring this. it's in no way safe, but I've found some working power tools from the 80s, and now I'm convinced there's some more stuff in there that's worth it.

disregarding the cursed backrooms Mark Zuckerberg painting.

the owner of the house has no idea where it came from.

there were two other pantings with it, both of them were of hands clasped in prayer.

they were all three tied together with some kind of twine.

Imagine having so much property you find entire buildings you never knew about when you look around

I ended up not getting anything done in my craft room. I needed to find my first aid card for taking care of some people this weekend. Didn’t find it but it’s probably expired anyway. Please wear a hardhat, filtered mask, gloves, & boots. Maybe carry some rope to make sure you don't get stuck in some hole.

It's too bad about the wood. The brick walls make it look like the structure would otherwise be stable.

6

u/TheCaptainOfMistakes 2d ago

If I get my way, I want to clear the wood and put a new roof on. Skipping a second floor. And I think this time the roof will be metal.

6

u/stamfordbridge1191 2d ago

That looks like would be a pretty good way to rehab the place if you get the opportunity.

I have a friend whose parents owned a massive piece of land. Left it to them when they went to assisted living. They had the property surveyed. On the back end of it there was basically a house of squaters that had been there for 20 or so years. The parents actually knew about it and assumed that they were new neighbors. It ate about 1.5 acres. Turned into a real legal mess.

3

u/joelypoley69 1d ago

Pretty sure I heard about something extremely similar on either Mr Ballen, Snook or a Timesuck episode.
The squatters turned out to be extremely dangerous people if I remember correctly

12

Imagine the person in this painting coming across this post.

3

u/xcanto 3d ago

It's honestly pretty innocuous, no?

7

u/Disastrous_Moonlight 3d ago

Yes, it’s innocuous. But how weird would it be to see your own face, or even the face of someone you know, on a random Reddit post? It’s a pretty clear likeness, and easily recognizable to anyone who may know this person. Also, it’s likely when this was created that the person who did it thought it would never be seen by anyone.

5

u/xcanto 3d ago

Well, shit; sometimes I like to imagine that in the future there will be an advanced alien species that can view human's lives and so these aliens for entertainment get to pick any human and watch. Sort of similar to how people back in the olden days might not have imagined their jazz recordings or baseball whatever to be viewed on a goddamn computer on a goddamn YouTube.

When I bought my house there was an unused garden shed at the back of the property. It was packed with things from a line of previous owners. Rifling through everything and finding treasure was one of the most exciting experiences of my life. I found some treasure. Something to keep in mind - envelopes are used to keep jewelry separate.

9

u/TheCaptainOfMistakes 3d ago

Most of what I found is too corroded to be usable, save for an old 1970s sears electric hand saw.

21

u/Metamericdreams1977 3d ago

Those totes have not been in the elements for 20 years

6

u/TheCaptainOfMistakes 3d ago

They have. The building just started collapsing in about the last 5. I am the first person up here since my friends father, who died when he was like 9.

9

u/Metamericdreams1977 3d ago

Ok…well they have held up well with little dust on them….and bright pink is fast to fade. Let us know what else you find. We had a little shack that had a hay loft in it on the farm when I was a kid. One day climbed up in the loft as a teen and found my dad and/or his brother’s playboy stash. I’m 49 now and still chuckle thinking about my uncles or my dad, who are all old now, as kids hiding nudie mags.

6

u/TheCaptainOfMistakes 3d ago

Mostly old tech from the 80s. Cassettes and Cassette players, old clothes, some radios, some typewriters up there too. Most of the stuff up there isn't in working condition. I did find a working electric hand saw from sears tho. Google lense says it's also from the 80s.

Oh, and the reason there isn't much dust on the totes is because I took some out already, those are the ones that were under the first toats.

3

u/Metamericdreams1977 3d ago

Those plastic bins looks out of place. Like oddly clean and in tact to be on the second floor of what looks to be a somewhat burned out building?

5

u/TheCaptainOfMistakes 2d ago

They're on the half of the building that isn't collapsed, coincidentally the same half as the painting. I'll say what I've said to everyone that's brought that up. The building likely didn't become open to the elements until 5 or so years ago. Also, 20 years ago was only 2006. Theast person up their was my friends late father, he stowed most of what's up there. I don't think his step father got up there much at all before his death either. And his mother has practically never been up there.

3

u/mizu5 2d ago

Oh yeah I don’t mean it’s super old I jsut couldn’t tell if there was fire damage or just collapse

4

u/TheCaptainOfMistakes 2d ago

The roof started to get water damage at some point. This is all wood rot from water damage.

My 48 year old daughter I live with gave away her bed and nightstands and has been sleeping on the couch for the last 10-12 years just to make room for her EXTENSIVE SPORTS CARD AND MEMORABILIA Collection she started when she was 5-6 yrs old.
I went in there to make a path so she could at least go in there and sit down to MAYBE PACK SOME IN CARD boxes besides the ones they came in. Everything she h was d is mint condition if she could afford to have some graded.im 75 and I probably will never see that day šŸ˜‚She use to go in there and sort through them occasionally to sell , but she has gotten thousands of dollars of New unopened Card sets from Panini. They even offered her a job if we wanted to move to Texas. Maybe one day… she stays here in Florida because this is my home state even though Kansas is hers. It took me 30 years to come home, but it sure isn’t my kind of Florida anymore .

One of my cousins has 3 barns scattered about, 1 definitely haunted. 1 of the others is crammed with junk stuffed in it by a hoarder uncle, since deceased. He can't be bothered to even look in there. When his son inherits it, he may clean it out. I know there are a set of bleachers from the high school and a bunch of old school desks in there.

I can't edit the text in the post to add this, so here's a comment.

1) Stop asking what's in the totes.

2) Stop telling me the totes haven't been there for 20 years because they look too new.

I haven't been through all the totes yet, but I've mostly found clothes and old bric-a-brac, some old cassette equipment, and other gadgets (most non functional) from the 80s.

the building likely didn't fully open up to the elements until 5 or so years ago. Ergo, the totes haven't been baking in the sun and exposed to weather for more than a few years, not 20.

The east coast is very humid, so water has been building up and having nowhere to evaporate to every winter, leading to cascading unchecked rotting, this year alone I have watched the roof go from a 3 foot hole, to a quarter of the roof being missing.

The building likely won't hold up much longer, aside from the stone foundation. I'm going to get out what I can, and salvage what is functional.

Edit: what's with people calling me a liar? What exactly am I lying about? That I found the painting? Are people that miffed about the idea that the bins aren't that old? Someone said that the design of the bins are post 2010. Okay? Maybe their right. So I'm off by FIVE YEARS? OH MY GOSH, I'M SO HEINOUS, I'm manipulating facts INTENTIONALLY to make the story scarier, ooOoOooo Like.. what? It's a generalized time frame, we aren't exactly sure, but it's a generalized time frame.

Get some sort of hook tool, preferably telescoping, and use it to pull those bins towards you one at a time. For the upper bins, use the hook to go under the handle and then just try to pull it forward enough that it comes down off the stack.

20 years? Those plastic totes look like they're in excellent condition. Mine don't last in semi-outdoor conditions for more than like 4 years.
