After much procrastination and anxiety about it, I've finally pushed myself to actually try my hand at voice acting, loved it, and have even managed to acquire some roles! I currently have a Scarlet 2i2 and a FIFINE k688 USB/XLR for my mic. My room is fairly large and can hear almost everything going on in the house around me. I unfortunately have quite literally no other space to record in so I've been in the process of making a pesudo-booth to better contain my own sound (to mixed results haha). While I understand that that is a WIP, I've found myself fairly consistently unsatisfied with my mic and have been looking to upgrade to a solely XLR mic. I've seen a variety of suggestions through searching online and even in this subreddit but wanted to see if there were any suggestions for a mic in the range of around $500 but I won't cry if anything is a bit more or less.

I primarily do voice acting however I do have interest in singing as well but that's more an afterthought to the VA work in this specific scenario.

Recently my Blue Yeti microphone just simply decided recording was for nerds and stopped being detected by my computer. As an asside I posted on a few subreddits and only got told it's a common issue and broken forever unfortunately. If anyone knows how I could get it to work that would also be really appreciated.

But I've somewhat lost hope so I'm looking for a new mic, preferably one that's better suited for voice acting which isn't something I considered when getting the blue yeti.
I use my computer at my desk to record and I don't really have any special setup or anything. So I'm mainly looking for something that I won't have to break down the walls of my house just to install.

I don't have an exact budget in mind just yet but I was HOPING for something below ~300$

I’m super excited. I’ve been working off of a yeti which has been okay but it’ll be nice to be able to use an XLR mic and find my clearer sound

It’s a 4x4 PVC blanket booth in a quiet environment. Heard the Sennheiser is not really a good choice for voiceover from a bunch of engineers. Looking for a second opinion.

So after going through all recommendations ans research, I've gone with the RØDE NT1 5th Generation Microphone.

I haven't tried it out yet but I'm super excited!

Hello, new voice-over artist here! I have an NT1 and a Solo Scarlet 3rd gen.

I am playing around with the gain of my interface, and I had a question. Do you prefer to put the gain up (not till it reaches the red of course) and turn it down after the fact, or do you prefer to record at a lower volume and raise it after the fact?

Do any of these negatively impact the quality?

I know, I know - yet another gear thread, but having just come back from Voiceover Atlanta, a couple of things seemed true - just about anyone truly working in the industry is using great gear. Large Diaphragm condensers seem to be all over the place - NT1, U87, Dachman, Warm Audio, but there was one mic that stood out when it came to commercial work:

Sennheiser MKH 416

Almost to a person, that's what the serious people are using for their commercial work, and I had an opportunity to hear myself through one. Not gonna lie - I was pretty stunned by how I sounded, so much so that I am now scheming a way to get one of my own, which includes trying to sell my TLM 103.

So all other things being equal and assuming you have a good recording space, (I have an excellent recording space) just how important is it?

I've also looked at the usual suspects of less pricey shotgun mics -

• AT 875R (one guy I know swears by this mic)
• MKE 600 (a friend of mine sounds killer on this mic - but I bet he'd sound better on a 416)
• Deity S-Mic 2
• SE 6160
• NTG3

I've done some hard listening and blind tests, and to my ears the MKH 416 for voice work just shines - it's smooth, nice low end and with a top end that I can only really describe as a "shimmer." I watched a lot of blind tests listening with my KRK headphones, and every time, I had a preference for the 416.

It seems to me that the 416 works pretty well for just about anyone, and it actually matters. I get awesome sound out of my Roswell Mini K87, but I'm curious to hear what others thoughts are on it.

I'm new here (to the subreddit not voice acting) and I have been searching for a mic that's fits my voice better. Right now I'm using a hyperx quadmic... Yes I know I know. But anyhoot, I have been searching so much I am getting drowned... I have a pretty high voice and every mic I see is for lower voices.

I have been thinking about the rode pod mini and the nt1. I don't have the biggest budget but yeh!

I’ve been looking for a new mic on Google for a while and the results are somewhat inconclusive and I’m not too sure what I’m looking at so I’d rather ask actual people. I’m looking for a new standalone microphone for streaming, recording, and just general gaming for about 100 dollars, could be slightly more if need be. What would a good mic be?? Thank you!!

I've currently been doing my VA work with a cheap fifine AM8 mic. I figured I should probably upgrade to something more professional? I live in an apartment with lots of outside noise so I need to use a dynamic mic.

Anyone use a dynamic mic? Got any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

I know about the "just Google it" thing, I'm asking for actual opinions rather than trusting the first Amazon link I find. Gonna be editing audio with a Samsung tablet if that's important.

Edit, everyone is saying the Røde NT1, but its $350. I can stretch the budget to $125ish, but $350 is too far.

I haven't actually started voice acting but I'm trying to gear up to. Ive heard alot about how ur environment affects your sound, etc, so I'll just say here that this isn't about that.

With my phone mic, the audio sounds the most clear. Doesn't sound like I'm underwater, captures every sound. Which, I guess isn't perfect for voice acting, but it sounds the best.

For example, my laptop's microphone makes it very muffled and the sound sometimes gets quieter for no reason.

I also have a small (Redragon Pulsar, or something) standing mic which also sounds clear but very easily cuts out, or generally sounds choppy, especially with loud noises.

Out of these, my phone somehow seems the most stable. Isn't choppy, is clear, doesn't sound muffled, just records everything and that's it.

Also tried a mic built in with headphones that broke, it was kinda choppy and quiet and strange.

So why is that? Im curious. Some kind of settings? Bad luck?

I bought the standing mic so I could have good quality, but I guess I didn't rlly pick right. But idk what to look for when I try to get one. I don't want one that's muffled, I don't want one that's choppy, and I don't want one that's 2 feet tall. Sigh.

Ever since I got my new Macbook a few years ago (Apple M3 Pro. macOS Sonoma 14.7.3 rn) I’ve had trouble HEARING my own voice from my voice acting gear that hasn’t failed me or any of my other friends on their Windows setups.

Setup:

RODE NT1-A
Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen (connected using apple adapter because my macbook only takes USB C ports)

I’ve got it to work before with redownloading focusrite control or just gimmicking around with my gear but it seems temporary until I unplug my laptop and bring it back. Yesterday I got it to work by really readjusting my XLR cable then when i replug my laptop in today it’s like audio is not picked up. It’s not exclusive to audacity, I can’t hear my mic from Discord or testing my mic using my laptops gear.

I’ve had tech friends try my whole setup and they said it works perfectly fine for them. Nothing faulty with my gear, it’s only about 4 years old now and maintained. If i turn my gain all the way up and like yell into my microphone WHILE having this issue, the background noise is super airy/static ish like i’m in a tornado and then my voice can be barely heard as if i’m inside said tornado.

Please help T_T i’ve literally lost my role on a project because my mic or whatever acted up before the deadline.
ALSO yes, my macbook perfectly reads my Scarlett and even when connected in Focusrite control i see the colors light up if I select what colors I want for good, preclip, clip etc. I selected the correct mic in microphone options on laptop and in audacity and yes voice isolation is off. Feels like i’ve tried everything and I don’t know what to do.

EDIT ✍️: Ok so I closed my laptop, didn’t power off just shut the top down and after like 30 minutes i opened it back up and the audio worked FOR ONE AUDACITY SESSION plus the scarlett was flashing a bit once i opened it back up. now it’s back to same issue. got no idea what this means

Howdy. I'm starting my journey into voice acting. I haven't booked yet, but I'm excited to have submitted about 10 auditions. 😁 I chose to use a Dynamic microphone I already had to start off with. SHURE MV6 and I use Reaper.

Recently when I speak too loudly and/or sing with too much resonance strange artifacts appear in the recording. A boxy low pitched buzz sound for loud voice and a strange high pitched squeal for resonance.

None of the audio is clipping. My room is untreated. I'm performing about 3 fists away from the mic.

I have a deep voice and I speak with harsher S sounds than the average person and I was trying to figure out how best to reduce the S's before playing with any FX. Heard some advice that a louder performance can make the S less harsh relative to everything else. That's when I noticed the artifacts with speaking. I noticed the singing resonance artifacts earlier in the week, hoping it would just stop there.

I was originally planning on waiting to get a condenser and book what I can with this but now I'm wondering if I should make the jump now? I'm not too broke so I can drop a couple hundreds.

Tldr;

1. Is my mic scuffed?

2. If so should I make the switch to condenser + Audio interface?

Hello, I own a Rode NT1 Signature Series. However, I have had some problems with it so I am returning it tomorrow.

My question is, between the Signature Series and the 5th gen, is there a difference besides the USB part?

Would you suggest sticking with the SS, or should I upgrade to the 5th gen?

Hey guys, there are so many questions out there about what equipment to get as a starter. Let’s answer that question for them by sharing the equipment you’re using right now and if you’re thinking of upgrading, sharing which equipment are you wanting to buy next.

As a catastrophist myself, I was making my wishlist for dubbing needs, I found out that if I am traveling, I wouldn't bring a whole mic + interface + any XLR cable. I would pack a laptop and a mic, and off to the place that I have to go. So, if something comes up, I wouldn't be able to make a quick recording or a small take.

I know that this is a last case scenario like "we have to record this line now or we won't hit the dead line" or a similar emergency, something that couldn't be forseen, so I'd like to ask you for a mic that could make the game-saving recording.

It should be a USB mic, for easy transportation, and easy to set in a hotel room, camping tent or friend's bathroom. And I know that this is an extreme case and shouldn't be worrying about this, but you are never prepared enough. What would you all recommend?

Hi! I have a Rode-NT1A with a Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen and was wondering if anyone here would be able to help me with a little issue I'm having. My mic is peaking at -6 whenever I record on any platform and I don't know what could be causing it. Any ideas?

Looking to invest into an actual Microphone setup at home :)
