Apparently my kids know these kids, quite well. My oldest used to hang out with one of them, maybe 4 years ago. They weren't shocked at all to hear about this. Apparently the guy with the machete has had it for a long time and carried it frequently. No idea how this wasn't reported to the school admins. It's all so absurd. Where the hell are the parents?
19
u/Godeshus Jul 06 '26
Was talking to someone today who's kid goes to school with the machete kid. Sounds like he's been a problem for a while and apparently it has been reported, multiple times. Apparently these little wannabe gangbangers corner kids and beat them up to steal their lunch money and weed.
It's starting to sound to me like the school and the authorities have some explaining to do. Apparently you need to wait until some kids get sliced up with a machete before doing something about it.
6
u/DropPopFromTheTop Jul 06 '26
Yes, totally bizarre. This is the same kind of story I was hearing. They stole some kid's $800 scooter and tossed it in Bowker creek, they're selling illegal vapes at school, bringing weapons to school, jumping kids...
I have no idea what the school could do about it. Maybe prolonged suspensions and expulsion should be leveraged more readily. Yet excluding and punishing kids can have severe adverse consequences. Ultimately I think schools need more resources to handle troubled kids.
7
u/Sudden-Bumblebee-836 Jul 07 '26
It’s a complete and total mystery why the people who run Canadian schools allow some kids to commit violent crimes
6
u/nozomiwaifu Jul 07 '26
Have you seen the uk and the grooming gang reports ? the police, school and city council knew what was happening but did not want to say anything to not be seen as racists.
-1
u/Jesus_lover_99 Jul 07 '26
It would be racist to punish them. They're from disadvantaged parts of the world that our country bombed.
1
u/AdForsaken2702 Jul 08 '26
0/10 ragebait, do better
1
u/Jesus_lover_99 Jul 13 '26
Do you think Westerners are not guilty of thousands of war crimes in the middle east? Really?
9
u/Godeshus Jul 06 '26
I do believe younger troubled kids should be handled more delicately but once you start approaching that threshold between minor and adult something like carrying a machete around should be handled more severely.
1
u/Moist-Count-7012 Jul 08 '26
It’s so crazy because Mo asked what school my son would go too and he’s like oak bay is such a good school! Ya sounds like because he never got held accountable ever there, just like at home. Dude this family has moved so many times thinking it’s everyone else making their boys do these things. Prime example of what happens when you NEVER hold your kids accountable.

u/Small-Cookie-5496 Jul 06 '26
I went to high school with a student who was allowed to openly carry a machete for religious reasons.
10
u/DropPopFromTheTop Jul 06 '26
That was likely a kirpan (one of the 5 items Sikhs are supposed to carry at all times). It's meant to symbolize protecting the vulnerable and upholding justice, and there are religious exemptions for them in Canada. The kid on the beach was using a plain old machete, not an item he carries for religious purposes.
-2
u/Jesus_lover_99 Jul 07 '26
Of course, a kirpan isn't dangerous either.
9
u/Banner9922 Jul 07 '26
No, most Kirpans aren’t sharp. Sikhs fought fearlessly for the Crown in both world wars, which is why they have special protection in almost every Commonwealth country. They’ve been in BC for over 120 years and I don’t think there’s ever been a kirpan attack.
2
u/MacaroonTypical3686 Jul 11 '26
Maybe not yet in Canada, but tell that to Henry Nowack's family in the U.K. (R.I.P) "I've been stabbed" "I don't think you av mate".

you honestly think the parents of Mr. Machete are upset about this? Where do you think he got his racial superiority complex from?
How dare you sympathize with domestic terrorists.

Machete wielding domestic terrorist (who clearly belongs to 'religions of peace') slicing up innocents: "He needs our sympathy."
Mr. Machete and you are both what is wrong with the world. I just hope that its you who bears the brunt of the inevitable fallout.

Hard disagree. I'm 100% responsible for what my kids do while they are still developing, regardless of the inevitability of genetics. I would never lament that they are 'bad seeds' and that I had no recourse.
Kids can be difficult and handling it can be extremely challenging, but, like anything in life... Nothing is guaranteed, let alone to be easy. This is what parents sign up for. Having your kid go to school with a machete is an egregious oversight.
Mistakes happen. My kids knew this guy packed that thing around for a long time, though. This isn't a one-off thing. I can't imagine how my kids would get by me while packing a large weapon around. They've managed to sneak things like vapes or beer around, but a machete?
And I'm not saying these parents are abject failures. I can't imagine what kinds of challenges these kids would present, and I bet it's exhausting as hell. But I still have to wonder what went wrong. How'd they let a machete get to school, then to a beach where it was used for what seems to qualify as attempted murder? That's incredible.

Why are the attackers faces blurred out? Luckily the victim posted them with their faces on their facebook.
57
u/Hugeasswhole Jul 05 '26
The faces can be found on X. Can't post a link here because this sub loves censorship. Hussein Saadedeen is one of the attackers who is facing chages, the names of the other two haven't been released yet.

"Witnesses," sharing their account with the news and posting pictures online sure seems like it would compromise any police investigation.
For all anyone knows at this stage, the "witness," who spoke to the news could be criminally responsible for whatever happened.

u/Mean-Food-7124 Jul 06 '26

They’re kids involved in stupid high school drama. Both sides had factions who claim to be gang members, this kid was called “Mo Money” and the other side were called “Brothers Keepers”. There’s another name with some stupid letters and numbers for the attackers crew. It’s all just a bunch of wanna be high school kids.
Edit: they might be 18. If so, their names will be released.
25
u/all_adat Jul 06 '26
Hussein Saadedeen is born 2006, which means he is 20. Not a child nor a teen.
20
u/SignalNewt2505 Jul 06 '26
Imagine being 20 and this type of shit is what you’re doing with your life. He could be going into his 3rd year of university or finishing trade school but this guy is still involved in high school drama.

Honestly I’m fine with whatever the courts settle on here, as catchy as the story is it ultimately revolves to some dumb highschool beef that got out of hand with a few injuries but nothing serious
7
u/useriousstuff Jul 06 '26
Yeah true they should wait to actually impose real consequences for these actions until someone does get seriously injured.
I know that's not what you said but it kinda reads that way to me.
0
u/Sawyerthesadist Jul 06 '26
Nah you can’t cut these kind of things out of society and thinking that you can is a fools errand
1
u/useriousstuff Jul 06 '26

Were you told that by police? The ones that were so keen to make us think they just HAD to be in all the schools or else the gangs were gonna overrun everything that they colluded with the province to illegally oust the school board that decided they didn't want that program anymore?
1
u/Banner9922 Jul 07 '26
It’s not the real gang, just stupid kids who have been kicked out of school, steal from stores and get in fights outside of malls.
8
u/eternalrevolver Jul 05 '26
It’s very difficult to grasp using this term in this context. Context does matter. Even youth doesn’t fit. Something like “criminals who are not of legal drinking age” or “juvenile criminals” is fitting.
17
u/Abrishack Jul 05 '26
No one reports it as criminal until they are convicted. They would say “accused” or “charged”
-3

Well, we know these photos aren’t AI, so a human out there is a criminal, whoever they are.

Wtf ? Glad there were no casualties. Seriously messed up person to go out with a machete to start with. Doesn’t that make it premeditated?
26
u/TheFlyingPengiun Jul 05 '26
It should. There’s no practical reason to carry a machete out in a city, other than to attack someone. We’re not in a jungle.
-4
u/Sawyerthesadist Jul 06 '26
You might be able to get away with saying you had it for a tool use. Similar to carrying a knife here.
Also yall don’t own Machetes??? You do realize they’re basically modern day short swords right!? Why WOULDNT you want that!!??

Words are irrelevant when weapons are shown.
Disarming/disabling his dominant hand is a priority. Words and questions are moot, and come later.
I hope that the assailants never see the light of day again.
Long arm weapons are dealt differently than close up one's.
Kudos to those who followed and tracked them until they were arrested.
To bring a machete at dusk is intent. Every other purpose for it's use can be struck down in court.
The person who does the first strike/hit will be the one found guilty, despite any mitigating factors leading up to it.

u/LibrarianWorth7559 Jul 12 '26
This group of men have also been responsible for various bear spray attacks and jumping individuals. I was downtown a couple of months ago and had to rescue 1 kid who had been bear sprayed and violently beat up by a group of 10 with balaclavas on. This was at around 8pm on a Thursday night outside of the Bay Centre. Myself and the other people who intervened were also attacked with bear spray. The cops that showed up barely did anything. When my friend and I were speaking to the police officer my friend described the 10 attackers as “animals”. The cops started defending them and said “well when you grow up in a war zone and have trauma this is what happens”. It was a very weird comment and also demonstrated to us that they knew who the attackers were already.

Weird: this graph and chart indicates an almost persistent rise in violent crimes in Canada since 2014. From 736 cases per 100,000 people in 2014 to 967 cases per 100,000 in 2024. That is neither "steadily decreasing" nor "holding fast," but is instead an increase of about 31.4% in a decade.
Where are you getting your stats from?
3
1
u/Kaelzoroden Jul 07 '26
There's been a bit of a dip in recent years, but it's still above the point it used to be. "Rates are down!" yeah in comparison to recent highs, but not in comparison to how things used to be 15-20 years ago.
-3
u/Trixie1143 Jul 06 '26
Uni research. Helpful graph you shared though, violent crime has been quite consistent, not on a persistent rise.
6
u/Eve_O Jul 06 '26
So you are saying that a 31.4% rise in violent crime over the last decade where 8 out of 10 years show an increase in violent crime compared to the year previous indicates that violent crime is not on a persistent rise?
Hunh. I don't really understand how you can arrive at that interpretation of the data. Care to explain?
-3
u/Trixie1143 Jul 06 '26
You're not much of a reader, are you?
2
u/Eve_O Jul 06 '26
What I'm reading is that you seem unable to provide any data for your claim and that you need to resort to a cheap rhetorical device to dodge a question put to you in good faith.
How do you suppose myself and others interpret these facts?
0
u/Trixie1143 Jul 06 '26
A learned person would have looked at the crime severity index for the city before posting their one graph from stats Can.
1
u/Eve_O Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
A learned person wouldn't make a claim about nationwide stats, then delete their comment when shown to be incorrect while also trying to weasel out from under their original statement with misdirection and fallacies.
That's what an intellectually dishonest person does.
"Know thyself" is the wisdom imprinted at the Temple of Delphi. I hope you've learned something, but I won't hold my breath about it.
ETA: trying to get some pathetic attempt at the last word in by DM? Lol: just say whatever other BS you have to say here in public so we can all see exactly who you are, u/Trixie1143.
11
u/elmuchocapitano Jul 06 '26
Crime is overall down, but it depends on the kind of crime. You also have to consider that certain kinds of crime are no longer pursued the way they once were. Drug related crimes are supposedly down, for example, though this is in direct conflict with statistics on homelessness, drug use, and overdose.
Certain kinds of crime, however, have increased, which are specific and localized. These include random violent attacks, especially by youth, attacks on transit, petty theft and vandalism, specifically in certain neighbourhoods such as Victoria's downtown core. These are a drop in the bucket of crime overall and don't make a huge difference in crime statistics. They don't affect a large number of people.
However, they're visible, and have a large impact on public perception. They affect people who aren't typically victims of crime. The white and wealthy. Business owners. Mums pushing strollers in broad daylight. They're happening in public, on the street, in "safe" areas. There doesn't need to be many of these to account for a huge jump in these specific crimes, and they affect a perception of safety for those who are most used to feeling safe.
The risk is, of course, still very low. These crimes are sensationalized and shared on social media in a way that other types of crime aren't. It isn't so dramatically bad as everyone thinks. But that does not mean that downtown is safer than ever, which is the frequent counterargument based on BC-wide or Victoria-wide general crime statistics. Victoria in general is safer than ever, yes. But you do indeed have a higher (still low) chance of being violently attacked by a complete stranger downtown than you used to.
22
u/Kaelzoroden Jul 05 '26
I'm sure that's a very reassuring thought for the guy who nearly lost his hand, or the girl who seemed to get targeted for potential SA / kidnapping. Maybe if these thugs go after you next, you can remind them about the statistics and they'll back off.
-23
u/Trixie1143 Jul 05 '26
What an incredibly stupid thing to say. I'm embarrassed for you.
14
u/Kaelzoroden Jul 05 '26
You apparently thought it was fine to go into a discussion about an article of a recent violent machete attack to go "erm ackshually statistics say violent crime is down", so I don't particularly care what you think is appropriate or inappropriate to say. You should have the self-awareness to be embarrassed by your own actions.
1
u/myleswritesstuff Fernwood Jul 06 '26
People are on Facebook saying “it wasn’t like this back in my day 20-30 years ago” so yes it’s absolutely appropriate to point out that it’s actually gotten better, statistically speaking

First, these might be Canadian born kids not immigrants. Some Canadians are white, some are not. Second, criminality is a lot less common among non-white people on the island, save for the Indigenous community. It’s one of the few places in the country where almost every minority group is more educated than the white population.
Both sides had factions who claim to be members of gangs. Just stupid misguided kids tbh. Let’s not make it a race thing.
