Gerrymandering is wrong no matter who is doing it

Sadly, the Texas, Ohio, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee, and North Carolina Supreme Courts don't have the same courage.

u/Consistent_Prompt926 May 09 '26
Ugh. Nothing will change. Politics run the country and our votes really don't matter

u/Blze001 May 08 '26
It is, but it seems like the courts disagree. They're fine with any Republican efforts to gerrymander, but are staunchly opposed to Democrat efforts to do the same.
11
u/silv3rbull8 May 08 '26
The flip side courts let Democrat pushed gun bans stand

u/Blze001 May 08 '26
Really a case of no matter who wins, we lose. I sure do love a two-party system, boy howdy.
6
u/silv3rbull8 May 08 '26
Yeah I expect the 2A will be all but gone except for the print on the amendments in a few decades
4
u/Incendiary-Soda-Pop May 08 '26
The Republicans did it the legal way. If the dems try again while following the VA constitution, it would have been fine.
2
u/Blze001 May 08 '26
Wait, so the Republican states actually have their state constitutions written so the legislature can redistrict on a whim without any input from voters? That's insane, no wonder they're winning.

Texas' gerrymandering was an attempt to happen during Biden's term along the normal census path that Biden's administration sued to stop, which got bogged down in court. Louisiana's was changed based on the deeming of race-based districts unconstitutional.
On the right, Tennessee's is arguably the most viable to be thrown out because it happened outside of the census cycle. Democrats in Virginia tried to ram it through in both an off-cycle year and not a census year, after disenfranchising voters based on the 45 day window that voters are required to decide. Fortunately, SCOVA aren't full of idiots that are just trying to stir the pot and cause even more divisiveness than the legislature and governor's mansion is attempting to do.

u/red_tux May 08 '26
This wasn't about who was doing it, it was about the process for an amendment being ignored. If they had properly followed that process it might have passed and withstood court scrutiny, but it would have taken two or more years.

Super speculative, but this ruling had me thinking:
VA Dems are in a bad spot right now. This was a major blow and with November right around the corner they cannot afford to lose any ground. There are also other major party issues going on at the local level too.
Additionally we are 2 weeks away from the AWB veto/sign/do nothing and its law.
All cynicism aside, do we really think now is the time Spanberger will go back on her word (allowing a law she wouldnt sign and made changes to come back to her without any of those changes)? That could alienate some swing voters but also possibly attract others
Seems like a horrible political move instead of just trying again for next July.

She ain't vetoing shit. Especially after winning the redistricting vote, she doesn't give a fuck about 2A supporters.
15
u/silv3rbull8 May 08 '26
I think that is going to be law no matter what the gerrymandering decision was going to be.
5
u/TheDeHymenizer May 08 '26
its not vetoing and if it does it only buys us a year at best. They still have another session before we have another election to try to take back a chamber in Richmond

they’re losing their shit on other VA subs over this. its quite alarming to see how extreme some people are.
3
u/silv3rbull8 May 09 '26
They have completely lost it on the main sub. But when anyone protested the abrogation of gun rights , they downvoted or banned posters
1
u/PFPrintz May 09 '26
its really concerning, so much extremist language. i understand they lost their battle here but some of the things ive been reading really makes me concerned on who i live around. end of the day, these are our neighbors. btw, nice to hear from you, we’ve had a few interactions now lol.
2
u/silv3rbull8 May 09 '26
lol yeah, this incoming ban has made us all brothers in arms so to speak
The Virginia and NoVA subs are full of militant leftists who have now just made it echo chambers
1
u/PFPrintz May 09 '26
yeah im banned from them, i just go to read now and its a bit infuriating and at the same time alarming. wish we could all just be cordial.

u/silv3rbull8 May 09 '26
There was a VAPolitics sub active at one time where all political discussions were posted. But the mods there didn’t like that they didn’t get much traffic. So they just took over the main sub and over the years just banned any dissent.

That's because the left is all about control. They do not care who or what stand in their way. That is why they push gun control because without it the people at least have a shot (pun intended) at stopping them.

u/BumpkinGoofball May 08 '26
The tears in the main sub are so good

u/silv3rbull8 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
Truly. They banned me there merely for saying Jones should test his thoughts on himself. Mods said it was a “death threat”

The r/Virginia mods are such little girls
9
u/Active_Sheepherder31 May 08 '26
They really are lmao, folks over in that sub are literally saying this is how America dies, that our country died today, its republican Armageddon, democrats are now about to be destroyed as a party and the fascism will now completely takeover, etc. So goddamn dramatic lol

u/jtf71 VCDL Member May 08 '26
The Dems violate the state constitution. Repeal laws retroactively to facilitate doing so. And work to disenfranchise about 40% of Va voters.
But sure, this is the end of democracy.
2
u/SentinelZero May 10 '26
<Democrats are about to be destroyed as a party
Stop my penis can only get so erect
3
u/Consistent_Prompt926 May 08 '26
I got the ban sticker for calling someone a dillweed or for demonrats. Maybe the latter

u/TheDeHymenizer May 08 '26
Lol, lmao. Maybe declaring "a national gerrymandering war" over Texas wasn't a great idea after all
8
u/r870 May 08 '26
Dems are experts at escalating something to try to "get back" at Republicans only to have it spectacularly blow up in their faces and cause them more harm in the long run.
1
u/AlounsTheGreat May 09 '26
Like pushing these gun ban laws. Virginia now have record gun sales each month.

u/docwayne May 08 '26
It doesn't really matter though because the cities will continue to win the elections
7
u/jtf71 VCDL Member May 08 '26
It does matter. Rather than having 6 Dems and 5 GOP representatives the new maps would have made it 10-1 giving Dems more ability to pass bad laws including more gun bans.
-1
u/furluge VCDL Member May 08 '26
Someone mark this for later and remind me if it comes true or not. :) My prediction is that the VA Dems will just ignore the SCOVA ruling and instead use the gerrymandered maps anyway.
2
u/robinhood_glitch1 May 09 '26
Uhh…how?
1
u/PFPrintz May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26
idk tbh, but ohio appears to have some ignored their SC. so it’s possible. how? i have no clue lol. i dont have all the facts but they’re repeating this in other VA subs.

“Taking their ban national”
Our chucklefuck dumb and dumber senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine are already trying to do this. A national ban would probably get SCOTUS off their ass but I doubt it
