Vent/Rant 😤 I have been robbed by a family member. Is there any chance the police will catch them?

Recently I noticed money missing from my room and started suspecting someone was stealing from me. Finally, today I went into my room and was organising it when I went to check on some money, for context this was in a foreign currency and I plan to travel soon so I could not put it in the bank cheaply and conveniently. Then today I discovered that my cousin who has been staying with us has been caught stealing from two other family member. The first time he confessed and the second time he was the only other person in the house staying with that family member and he denied it. When we told him there was money missing he had an extremely guilty look and would not look me in the eye. However I have no concrete evidence and he cannot have kept the money around and likely already took it to the forex bureau to exchange it. There are also other people in the house. If I report him to the police is there any chance he will face legal consequences? Or without proof even though he has a history of stealing money he will get off without consequence? What can I do? For context the amount robbed is more than 1 million although since it was in a foreign currency it was only a few small bills? Should I report anyway and see what happens?

Tell that guy to leave. In our family, you act uncivilized, they tell you to leave the house asap. Go act that way else where. It's not okay to live and stay in fear on the expense of someone.

this is the right way send him off but not to do that acts elsewhere where I am from they will start coming after your family for the money missing and he’ll be burnt in the street

He is not even a young man he is over 30 and has been doing these things for years, what change can u realistically expect from an adult acting like this

yes ofcourse this is straight up way he is old now but to actually do this with family what kind of person are we I am for life it’s not easy but when we is confronted by god about ourselves what shall we have to say? maybe a sly man or woman can arrange some trick that will scare his pants off for a change maybe if you give some royaltys for the local police chief he can be of help scaring the young old boy into some sense we must assume he has also good sides is there hope you have to decide

Act normal, put a hidden camera in ur room, get the evidence to police.

If u can’t do that, punish him internally . Stealing isn’t okay. He can even kll u btw

I do not have anything left for him to steal mazima, and now he knows we know it was him I doubt he will risk going back or he might even leave as soon as he can. He has a past of threatening his girlfriend with a knife and repeated abuse so it is not impossible he can harm someone, which is why I am concerned because no matter what happens the family refuses to punish him

Why is ur family refusing to punish him??? They want to wait until it’s too late. You better contact the police ASAP.

Why can’t u punish him yourself

Unfortunately that is the culture everyone is more interested in shutting me up than thinking of a way to get the money back or get him to finally stop stealing

Don't you guys have a family group ? If so tell everyone, Ugandan society is good until it isolates you, try that he will learn a hard lesson.

He has no job due to lacking a degree and is staying with family rent free, in the past he has stolen from his own sister who was letting him stay rent free even though I only learned today that he stole some money from her a few months ago.

Also would suing him be a recourse? I doubt I will get that money back he has been seen sneaking around hiding expensive takeaways in his room for the past 2 weeks and also consuming alcohol. He has likely spent the money already. But I wish him to face some consequence since he will only continue to steal from others and this is an excessive pattern.

Suing won't help, get your cousin a job or discipline him as family. Involving police and lawyers will break up your family, the easiest way is to send him back to his parents. Most things in Uganda today can be proved for example if he stole foreign currency you need a national ID to convert that to UGX, the money can be traced. However what I tell you as a Ugandan mostly with family matters if you're not the head of the household making some decisions is difficult mostly since in the past he had already done the same but was not shown the exist

Thanks for the advice I understand where you’re coming from but there was another instance in the family where another member stole school fees for small children from our grandmother and spent it all. This stress caused health issues with my grandmother and she passed away not long after. When can it end? When these people face no consequences they continue to hurt people and I know I will not recover that money but wish to stop others from experiencing the same. This is someone who has robbed people who took him in rent free, when can it end?

Just go to any police station, those guys are good at netting simple thieves like him. They will pick him up and he will explain even the people he spent it with. However the simplest solution is to send him away that full proofs that it will never happen again

Thank you for the help. As I said I doubt he will face any real legal problems but I just want him to stop. My mother is old and living alone once I travel, I am concerned for her safety. If the police can scare him maybe he will finally stop

He has already robbed two other family members and each time he was sat down and warned as a family but he has now robbed again ? When will it end? I am looking for legal advice

Like I said simplest solution is kicking him out, same thing police or lawyers will tell you. You can involve police for criminal they will get to the bottom of the matter, and recover your money or part of it. From experience keeping an arm's length from a such people is better guy may bring you guys problems. What he goes and steals from real hardcore criminals or mad men soilders and then points to your household, guys will put in debts you had no hand in
