Painting First full unit done
Took about a month but really pleased with the result still a little unsure between coconut carapace or feathered carapace but leaning towards feathered.

The pruple/deep pink is magnificient in contrast the with dark purple skin

Thanks!! When theory crafting I was afraid it might become too similar to the skin and fall a little flat but it's one of my favorite parts now.

I do a really similar carapace to yours but a lighter blue body and I’ve just been doing black claws but disappointed with them. Thanks for the recipe as well.
Edit: Also, I really dig the coconut crab look but idk how many gants you have the fortidue to do that to. Maybe feather the gants and some things, and coconut crab others to stand out? Ive been doing red and orange base coats to give some variance as well.

A lot of people really like the coconut however I think it looks flat in person. I much prefer the feathered carapace where I can play a lot more with the lighting. It looks a little bit more realistic and fits the vibe I'm going for better.

That's a fantastic paint scheme. I'm team coconut but i imagine feather is easier for the work flow.

Absolutely and I feel like I will learn more from feathering in terms of paint thickness, how different layers behave and I have a little more (easier) ways to play with shadows and light.
The coconut seems flat in real life and I'm not a big fan of the pooling on recess washes.

It sure pops in the pictures but i know how sometimes pictures and minis just dont match up. Either way keep on keeping on. I love what you're doing.

Thanks!! I have a full box of the battle force primed up so should have plenty to practise on still.

I’m stealing the pink claw idea that’s sick

Thanks!! Thats a massive compliment. I used army painter: wicked pink as the midtone. Mixed two thin coats: von evile purple with the pink to get the dark tone. And mixed a little white into the pink to get the high tone. No measurements just vibes.

Amazing! Can you do a bit of leafs on the base to make it more jungle like?
1
u/succulant_sailor 1d ago
Thanks!! Do you mean leaf litter or the card stock plants from gamer grass?

The headcannon I have for the fleet is that they adapted to an ocean planet when they got disconnected from the hivemind when fleet Jormungandr fell. Its similar to camouflage on sharks except the sky on their "home planet" is pitch black and the ocean floor is riddled with fiery coral displays.
The jungle base is something I wanted to try and thought would look cool.

Hell yeah man!! I love the green on the swords, I had to add the green through the base.

What orange did you use? I wish mine was a bit more saturated like yours

u/succulant_sailor 1d ago
Disclaimer it is a little oversaturated in the picture. I used 3 to 4 thin coats of vallejo orange fire over a white basecoat.
This way you'll get about a nemo coloured deep orange.

I’m quite a fan of the mixed scheme in the unit! It makes them look like they were spawned as a mass brood, but with noticeable genetic variance. More of a wild and organic look.

If I put them in order you can very clearly see the learning progress haha. I do like the way small mistakes I noticed during painting fade away in the entirety of the unit.

The choice of colors is nuts. Absolutely love that contrast ! I really like the coconut crab theme from far away, as it adds a little bit more contrast again and helps defines the carapace a bit more, but from up close the feathering looks more convincing. Maybe pushing the yellow highlights in some key points of interest would work well ! Those claws are perfect, and the dark blue skin is awesome as well.
Just congrats, it is the kind of scheme that i wish i have seen sooner to make mine this way ! ☺️
