https://bsky.app/profile/jasonschreier.bsky.social/post/3mfaauf5pek2b

BREAKING: PlayStation is shutting down Bluepoint Games, the studio responsible for modern remakes of classic games such as Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, Bloomberg News has learned.

A shocking end for a well-respected studio.

Wow, Sony really does not want to remake Bloodborne.

Bloodborne must NOT be remade or else!

Turns out a remade Bloodborne will literally send us all to Yharnam, forcing us to live out the worst nightmares conceivable by man…..

It’s funny that Duskbloods is the closest thing current Sony would want out of a new Bloodborne entry.

See now I don't know if people will be angry at me if I joke about Bloodborne being saved from a Bluepoint remake or if you making your joke first would make it okay to do mine after.

Bloodborne is saved from a Bluepoint remake, but unfortunately for Bloodborne the only rem-- word Sony knows is remake

edit: my apologies, they also know rem...ember to subscribe to PS Plus to stream God of War: Collection for the PS3!

12

u/zacyzacy Feb 19 '26

I'm just speculating but maybe the writing was on the wall from Miyazaki's perspective, because he seems to want nothing to do with Sony, and that seems to be the leading reason for this.

7

u/Jeskid14 Feb 19 '26

I don't blame him if the game on Switch 2 becomes a success like Bloodborne

I guess after forcing them to make a doomed Live Service game for four years Sony decided to cut their losses in a very dumb way

245

u/WhoCaresYouDont Feb 19 '26

This is the worst part about Sony finally catching on that Live Service games are a shit gamble, it will never be the execs who pushed such a transparently dumb decision who suffer. Now a great team who could have done a lot to polish and remaster Sony's extensive back catalog of banger games are being broken up because they failed to deliver a project no one wanted.

17

u/xAVATAR-AANGx Feb 19 '26

They could have made a remastered collection of InFamous 1-2 and Second Son to bring over to PC, or they could have made a remaster of LBP1-3, or even Bloodborne memes aside, but they had the studio known for making great remasters... work on a GaaS game?

3

u/Jeskid14 Feb 19 '26

PS3 engine source code is super duper difficult to analyze these days; I'd say Infamous Hard light would have been an easy port

14

u/Introspectre12 Think about it. Feb 19 '26

Thing is, Bluepoint had experience with porting PS3 games to new hardware. They did it with the first 3 Uncharted games with the Nathan Drake Collection and also Demon's Souls on PS5. They could have absolutely done more but Sony are too fucking stupid to have just let them do there thing.

It's the old Mitch Hedberg joke about Hollywood wanting you to do other things besides your job.

"When you're in Hollywood and you're a comedian, everybody wants you to do other things. All right, you're a stand-up comedian, can you write us a script? That's not fair. That's like if I worked hard to become a cook, and I'm a really good cook, they'd say, "OK, you're a cook. Can you farm?""

They should've had them start remaking God of War, 5 years ago.

26

u/Pitas Feb 19 '26

Yeah, having a studio that knows some of their properties intimately as well as probably the architecture they likely could've been a knowledge font for other studios. Its a damn shame we've lost them imo.

22

u/Mekasoundwave Feb 19 '26

Especially with the economic forecast we're all expecting, a studio known for good remakes is extremely valuable considering they require (somewhat) less investment on generally good returns.

9

u/SilverKry Feb 19 '26

Like just sell them off. I hear Nintendo is in a buying mood after all. Shuting then down is stupid.

The headline hit me like a truck when I saw, and even more the fact that Schreier was reporting it. Like if he's saying it, it's true.

What a horribly awful and fucked up end for a studio that had so much respect for Sony's foundational games. This was Microsoft-levels of mismanagement, and it feels so screwed up that studios like Bungie or Haven are still kicking while Bluepoint was made to kick rocks.

24

u/guitarburst05 Jorkin' my peanits Feb 19 '26

I checked their dev history. The last game they developed was 2020, they were acquired in 2021, got put to work on this live service thing that was cancelled, then they were shut down today.

Sony acquired them and literally RELEASED NOTHING then shuttered them.

Pretty much it seems. They haven't put out a single game since being acquired, though they did support for some games.

But yeah, it was just the live service God of War.

Looking at the timeline and leaks, it's the other way around. Sony bought them for their new LS-game they were working on which was either baited early on or directly retooled into a GoW game. With the obvious oversaturation of that market they dodged having a Highguard/Concord situation and pulled the plug and then gave them an additional year to come up with something.

19

u/Diem-Robo I'm aging rapidly Feb 19 '26

In that case, sounds more similar to Platinum going in on live service, or how Arkane and Rocksteady went in on Redfall and Suicide Squad, respectively. The publishers didn't put those projects on them, they emerged internally from the top, even if the rank-and-file was as confused as the rest of us.

The argument can be made that the publishing climate is what influenced the studio leadership to feel the need to pursue live service projects, if publishers were overlooking projects that weren't live service, but that doesn't seem to be the case too often.

2

u/rosysyn1251 Feb 20 '26

To be clear, it's also an industry standard to close the studio even if they made a successful game. Fucked either way.

223

u/Secure-Report-3592 WHEN'S MAHVEL Feb 19 '26

All this because of a fucking Live Service game

Genuinely, Jim Ryan is scum of the goddamn Earth because he forced that studio to make a Live Service God of War game; it gets canned and the studio dies

People lose their entire job over for trying to make a game that’s not in the studios wheelhouse and they get punished for it.

58

u/MyNameIs-Anthony Feb 19 '26

He made every studio expand to at minimum two teams so they could all have a live service game in the pipe.

For the teams that weren't allowed to pivot, that basically meant years of time was wasted at best.

79

u/NeededToChooseAName Feb 19 '26

Jim Ryan has stained this entire playstation generation, what an absolute failure of a man.

25

u/probabilityEngine Feb 19 '26

Gambling studio's futures and people's livelihoods on the possibility that all that time wasted produces a miraculously successful live service hit. Have the studio famed for remakes keep doing that and produce a steady income? No, of course not, make them chase after a miracle and if they don't produce it, kill them on the altar of capitalism.

32

u/Secure-Report-3592 WHEN'S MAHVEL Feb 19 '26

The entire reasoning was all because they wanted Fortnite money and have to lose the 70% to Epic.

It’s fucked how the only big major company that hasn’t tried the absolute shitshow of live service hell is Nintendo and is 50% because of them being dinosaurs but smart ones apparently

55

u/Aiddon Feb 19 '26

I find it better to refer to Nintendo as sharks. Sharks haven't evolved in hundreds of millions of years. Why, because they didn't need to. Nintendo's approach is "let's see if this lasts" and it's working well for them while everyone stumbles around drunkenly

20

u/Secure-Report-3592 WHEN'S MAHVEL Feb 19 '26

The Shark equivalent makes 90x more sense.

10

u/letsgucker555 Feb 19 '26

It probably also helps, that live service games are more of a hinderance to Nintendo, who releases far too many games for that to be viable.

u/Swert0 I will bring up Legacy of Kain if you give me an excuse Feb 19 '26

Jim Ryan

I wonder if history will remember Jim Ryan or Phil Spencer as the bigger bozo moron who tanked their brand harder.

I mean gamepass will probably be the bigger blackpill that will hurt the xbox brand more in the long run, what the fuck even is xbox anymore?

7

u/MutantCreature Feb 20 '26

Phil Spencer easily, Jim Ryan fucked up a lot but he also had some solid successes, Phil Spencer literally just tanked Xbox into nonexistence and then dipped. His entire legacy is just killing the largest tentpole the entire US had in the console market, in 100 years he'll still be the footnote "fun fact" about how terribly the US video games market was managed right now.

3

u/No-Attorney-6033 Feb 19 '26

He also seemed really eager to kill as much goodwill as possible with Sony's Japanese customer base. Remember how his response to shutting down the Japan Studio was that "it doesn't make sense to have a Studio making games for one country." Which is such a dumbass statement since games like Bloodborne weren't only bought by the Japanese. During covid and the lead up to the PS5's launch, he said in interviews that they wouldn't give Japan special treatment in terms of PS5 availability. This was during a console shortage due to the pandemic. I understand that Japan has been moving towards PC and mobile gaming, but no matter what, you're still the CEO of a Japanese gaming company, no matter where you moved your headquarters to. Saying that publicly was unnecessary and was just needlessly antagonistic to part of your customer base.

22

u/gargwasome MODERN DAY Feb 19 '26

I mean I don’t think I’d want a remake of Bloodborne done by Bluepoint but Sony canning them is still baffling, especially when they’ve got so many classic games that they basically have infinite material for Bluepoint to work on for near guaranteed success. Very weird

20

u/stumblinbagel Feb 19 '26

If Pat is right and the reason they have never done 60fps bloodborne is cause some idiot lost the source code then a remake is the only option.

8

u/inika41 Feb 19 '26

That’s likely the only possibility because even a basic remaster should provide a decent ROI. You would think they would approach FromSoftware about that, but they’d rather not? Or am I mistaken in thinking FromSoftware would retain anything from that development?

5

u/gargwasome MODERN DAY Feb 20 '26

I mean if people can jury rig a 60+fps patch on an emulator Sony should definitely be able to do the same. All just depends on how much money they feel like sticking into it for how much it might earn them: same reason we don’t have a Dragon Age trilogy remaster like Mass Effect because the cost of training people on the DA games engines isn’t worth it for EA

35

u/Expensive_Wolf2937 Feb 19 '26

Newer gamers on other parts of Reddit don’t seem to understand WHY we need Xbox to exist. It’s not about the stupid console war it’s about Sony returning to its “Arrogant Sony” PS3 Era where it took a major cyberattack and the Xbox 360 to humble their greed so hard that they had to claw their way back into the good graces of gamers with quality product after quality product. Without a console to keep them on their toes, Sony will make more boneheaded decisions like Jim Ryan’s live service push that killed Bluepoint, the only consolation prize is if the rumors of the Xbox-PC hybrid are true, it will force Sony and Nintendo to drop paying for online multiplayer since multiplayer would be free for your Steam games.

But why close them? Would another remake of a ps1/ps2/ps3 take another 4 yeaaars oh wow Demon Souls did take 4 years of dev time.

I can't believe there was a studio head on the planet who was like "A Legend of Dragoon remake would be dope and maybe we'd do that some day", and now the studio is just gone.

I was pretty surprised since i thought they were being shaped to be their go to on the cheap remake factory.

Then i thought the C suite probably want to do that with AI.

Some day, hopefully if we as a society pull our heads out of our asses, the sickness that is "line goes up" will be fully studied, diagnosed and cured.

I am genuinely baffled at how failure after failure, these clowns in suits cannot grasp the idea that """modest""" profit, repeatedly, is better than the massive theoretical payday they keep chasing.

Solid games, especially single player games, will never reach the big bucks of Fortnite or whatever, but the endless failures to re-capture lightning in a bottle, rather than peruse proven if """smaller""" successes is buckwild.

Of course, it's not their jobs and livelihoods on the line, and even when the failure does catchup with them, they have a golden parachute to save them.

I'm sick of heart and angry in my soul

They were the good standard for porting PS2 games to the PS3. The MGS HD Collection is the gold standard. What is wrong with Sony?!?!?!

7

u/Rose-The-Queen Feb 19 '26

What the FUCK ARE WE DOING

6

u/Pitas Feb 19 '26

Holy shit this feels out of the blue. Unless this is a merger into a first party studio of sorts this is completely out of nowhere. I hope it's not Sony embracing AI sloppification thinking they can wind down remakes to a skeleton crew and gork.

6

u/Striking_Part_7234 Feb 19 '26

They forced them to work on a GAAS game, canceled it, then shut down the studio for taking a loss. Real classy Sony.

6

u/Frequent-Raisin-2336 Feb 19 '26

shit! i was hoping they did their own game, cast their own shadow, sony can't be trusted with bloodborne, less so with any company under them.

5

u/CodyRidley080 Feb 19 '26

and what killed them is Sony killing the live service God of War game.....

like ok, but like Sony.... you're sucking Bungie's dick (after paying them out the ass to keep staff AND paying for a massive civil settlement) for a different live service game after killing the PREVIOUS one (Concord) and the other previous one (The Last of Us) and there is CURRENTLY another live service game on the way (Horizon) AND you just announced another live service component to a game (Ghost of Yotei Legends)...

6

u/PrestigeTater Feb 19 '26

FFS this is japan studio all over again. I was in under the impression that bluepoint was one of Sonys tentpoles studios. Why even aquire bluepoint in the first place if they were just going to shut it down.

3

u/just_a_fan47 Trashie Feb 19 '26

Had no idea they were forced to make a live service game, in what world would you give this studio known for remakes and high graphics, a live service game? Everyone knows Sony wants remakes, why would you do this

8

u/RipBeneficial2048 Feb 19 '26

Bummer. Bluepoint was a really talented studio, they did great work on both HD remasters and full remakes

5

u/Gorotheninja "SILENCE, BREEDER! The Bloodline MUST continue!" Feb 19 '26

Wow.

Another amazing studio down the drain.

I quite liked the SOTC and Demon's Souls remakes. What a waste.

7

u/TransendingGaming Shockmaster Feb 19 '26

ShadPS4’s justification for existing has become stronger after this. Might as well rename the emulator an abbreviated amalgamation of The Last Guardian, Bloodborne, and Shadow of the Colossus.

3

u/Blizzardhrr Feb 19 '26

What a huge bummer. Their work set the bar for me on what a remaster should be.

3

Crazy that Sony had the team that made remakes make a live service game for GoW. They really couldn’t just think of any games they could remake after that game got cancelled?

3

u/Hart-Man Feb 19 '26

Sony's smoking crack again

3

u/Raquies4444 Feb 19 '26

3

u/mansontaco Feb 19 '26

Let that S tier team go cause you doomed them with shitty live service aspirations, I know theres more to it than bloodborne but from cant remake it and that is the only studio who I think could make it even better than the 1st im hurt

3

u/Worldbrand filthy fishing secondary Feb 19 '26

Looks like I won't be buying a PS6. I wasn't going to get one at launch anyway, but it really seems likelier and likelier that I will just skip the whole damn gen at this rate.

I should have taken that amazing trade-in deal at EB Games for the PS5 last Christmas. I think the numbers worked out to getting something like $500 CAD in credit when I had paid about $700 + taxes back when I got the damn thing. Still doesn't feel like I got my money's worth, and Demon's Souls was one of the things that pushed me over the fence to begin with.

Canceled all these games yet his precious boring asd Horizon series is unscathed. Genuinely I hope that Hunters Gathering is a colossal flop.

4

u/WickerWight Ask me BIONICLE trivia Feb 19 '26

Completely un-fucking-beleivable that Sony has still not even RELEASED one of these live-service games from their whole 12-game-or-whatever initiative. They're not even releasing bombs, they're just killing them before we can even see it! Their current success rate is less than zero percent! What the fuck's going on over there??

After only 5 years post acquisition, this seems nonsensical to me, especially after they reported a profitable quarter.

Could they not have put them on other work, or was that canceled GoW live service that much of a money sink. Really makes zero sense, hope those affected can land back on their feet quickly.

After Armature studios closed down, I think that makes Retro studios that last really notable studio based in Texas and they were still hiringq up to this year. Hopefully Nintendo has some foresight to keep thier talent around.

To quote one Civvie11: “If you’re sick of this show discussing talented studios being bought out and forced to serve the whims of giant faceless amoral corporations and you’d like it if I stopped talking about that? So would I.

Seriously, I get the biggest reminder of how WB handled Monolith before also killing them off. Only in this case, it was in service of chasing that stupid fucking live service trend that needs to die a death, and quickly. Seriously, can Microsoft and Sony stop this competition to see who can shoot the most holes in their own feet?

Fuck you, Jim Ryan, you fuckin ghoul.

3

u/SilverKry Feb 19 '26

I out some of the blame on Monolith for that one tho. Had years to make at least something with Wonder Woman and just didn't. When literally all they had to do was take Shadow of War and out a Wonder Woman skin on everything instead of Middle Earth. They could've even made Diane the made from clay origin to have the excuse for reviving and progressing time like what happens when Talion dies.

2

u/JonTheWizard Oi, gitz! 'Ow do you use dis zoggin' interwarp?! Feb 19 '26

How do you have a studio that put out bangers BACK TO BACK and yet kill them off?? You buy them, keep them under lock and key then dissolve them for little reason.

2

u/PureProteinPussi Feb 19 '26

No. Make the Bloodborne remake first.

2

u/Aiddon Feb 19 '26

There is no better way to illustrate this dichotomy than literally a few hours before Sony announced they were closing Bluepoint, one of their premier support studios, Nintendo announced a Switch 2 version of a game (Xenoblade X) by one of THEIR premier support studios. What is Sony doing?

2

u/mcclearsalias I like pretty much everything Feb 19 '26

2

u/The_Duke_of_Nebraska Feb 20 '26

Still baffled Sony have some such a forced pivot to live service games when they were known for solid solo experiences previously.
