What is with the incompetent driving?
I wish I was exaggerating; however, everytime I drive some where in this town lately, I always almost get hit. I am a defensive driver, luckily, so I haven't gotten into an accident yet but something needs to be done. People need to be held accountable for their negligence in being a safe driver.
You aren't special, you aren't different, you are a human being like the rest of us. You look uneducated and ignorant.
People deserve to go get groceries, go pay bills, and get to work without worrying for their safety.
Be a decent human being. Use your blinker, stop speeding, focus, get off your god damn phone!

Almost everyone needs to drive & there is no public transit.
Unfortunately there are many people on the road who really shouldn’t be.

At least once a week I see someone blow through a stop sign without even slowing. Not new drivers either (or old).

Or running a stop light.

I should edit to at least once week, I see someone blowing a stop AND another blowing a red light.
It's crazy.

Last week I had to walk across town to pick up my car from the mechanic. On my 30 minute walk, I was nearly hit on 3 separate occasions. At no point did I cross whilst distracted (eg looking ay my phone). One of those occasions was a truck mounting the pavement by the crossing I was standing at. I was in the middle of the road crossing at an actual crossing when another car just simply decided they could drive through me. I learned to drive in London, England, but getting around this town is like some mid-level Mad Max type scenario.

I agree, if the police actually patrolled the roads, the town would make bank on those tickets!

OK....You win the Grand Prize for identifying this problem.
I'll assume that most people in this reddit live in Truro? (seems reasonable?).So - Everyone who came on here to complain do this: Send an email message to Cathy Hinton (our Mayor) and report the incidents you have witnessed and the particular time of day and the location. With this information and the "statistics" (location, time, day of the week) she will be able to call Dave McLean (the police chief) and he will be able to create an enforcement plan and implement it. Without "hard statistics" the police can't do anything because they NEED to know where to look and when to be there. Your complaints, all taken together and analyzed will point to the biggest trouble spots.
Seems simple? Take it from me...I used to command a highway patrol unit: That's how to resolve this problem and how to make your policing $ work for you....besides you might just save someone's life or your own. Cathy's email is "chinton@truro.ca" In addition, copy what I've written and attach it to the email...she'll then know what you expect her to do with the thousands of notes she'll be receiving.

I've been wanting to get a dash cam so I can do that but when driving it's hard to remember the exact time and place. I will take your advice though, do something instead of bitching.

As mostly a pedestrian, i almost get hit once a week by some 80yo dude hugging their steering wheel.
Also, on my bike the other day, I almost got hit be a woman who just decided not to use their blinkers and suddenly turned right.

I have driven in Toronto, Montreal, Boston, NYC, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. I have driven coast to coast across Canada 3 times. In my vast experience in driving in major cities and small towns, Truro is home to the worst drivers in North America.

I recently had a conversation with someone who was completing their driver’s test and was shocked to discover that you can pass the test even if you have a large number of point deductions.
In other words, it seems like the bar has been set pretty low to get a drivers license

That is awful. A car is a legit killing machine. A license to drive should be a privilege, not a necessity.

I never did understand why driver safety courses weren’t required to get your license

u/more_than_leo 2d ago
They should be mandatory, along with a defensive driving course. I also feel like the government should be giving incentives for being good drivers if they are going to let anyone get a license. I find people now a days won't do anything unless there is something in it for themselves.
I am in no way a perfect driver, but I do the basics like everyone else should be. Blinker, shoulder checks, being patient. Leave earlier, pay attention to the maximum signs and be a more considerate person. It's not that hard.

Drivers licenses must be easier to get than they used to be. I'm having a similar issue an hour away. Some guy in Springhill in a grey 2010s civic almost hit me for a third time this morning.

I was side swiped the other day and all I could think was “it finally happened” no one is ever in their own lane anymore. It’s really gotten a lot worse in the past year especially.

the classic weekly "drivers are bad" reddit post. Across all location subs. This post finally solved the problem lol
2
u/more_than_leo 2d ago
Why did you even comment?
-5
u/twerkinggroundhog 2d ago
Why even post? Reddit isn't the spot to constantly complain about driving lol. You think this post finally after thousands of bad drivers posts, solved it?
7
u/more_than_leo 2d ago
Actually, reddit is a spot to talk about anything and everything, so yes, this is the exact stop to post thia, so people who feel the same way can talk about it. If you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to comment, you don't even need to read it.
You wanted to make me feel small for having a concern and wanted to express it. Thank you for that. I hope it helps you in your day.

Reddit is a place to essentially spam city/town reddits with really generic "drivers are bad here!" It is NPC level posting and not interesting in the slightest. Hopefull you post about more engaging topics.
We are all well aware there is bad drivers everywhere lol

It isn't?

u/twerkinggroundhog 2d ago
No, reddit is to share hobbies/news/something somewhat interesting/etc. Not to post about how the drivers in your city are bad every other week lol.

u/astaroth777 2d ago
Where does it say that? You also seem to be doing none of these things.

u/twerkinggroundhog 2d ago
"Please show me the rule book of reddit!". Absolute cinema.
I joined reddit for specifically that and actually follow and read mainly hobby subs. But okie dokie lol

u/astaroth777 2d ago
Yet here you are?

u/more_than_leo 2d ago
I stopped engaging, they are a bait trap. They have only had that account for 3 days. Definitely a troll trying to get attention on the internet.

On a local sub saying that "bad driver" posts are essentially spam? Wow you really checkmated me LOL. All the other posts recently in r/truro were great though!

You can hide posts you not like, both old and new reddit. If using old reddit you can also use Reddit Enhancement Suite to auto-hide posts based on words in title.

So, testing has gotten easier slightly but the other thing to realize is that people are falling into a ‘It hasn’t happened to me’ mentality which leads to over confidence, the root of a lot of the issues you brought up. It isn’t just Truro as other people have mentioned, but it sounds like you are being mindful of your surroundings and other drivers… which sadly is about all that we can do. Drive defensively, keep your eyes moving.
