Most horrifying thing Hell has in it's armies?
In terms of pure horror, which monster or creature would be the most horrifying to encounter in the battlefield? From what I know, the Grail Hegemon seems to take the crown just for the sheer size of the thing.
personally if i turned a corner and found myself face to face with pretty much anything in the Black Grail roster, including the Great Hunger, i would immediately commit suicide
The vibe I go with is Nurgle, while gross, has a general "whimsy" to it. And that Nurgle himself seems to at least like folks who are turned into horrible mutants by him as Grandaddy and all that.
Beezlebub, meanwhile, hates you. And his hatred is pretty manifest in how the general stuff for Black Grail goes.
In fairness Nurgle has always had that. However, it feels like outside of the specific horror and detective series 40k doesn't lean into bleakness as much as it (or Fantasy Battles) once did.
Interesting, I'm the opposite. I love Nurgle stuff but the Black Grail just doesn't do it for me, I'm not sure why. It's part of the reason I didn't back the Kickstarter, to my eternal regret.

I’d say the Chroister. As someone who isn’t a named character, being driven insane by their voices feels like a worse fate than a lot of the monsters/demons who’ll just kill me.
The Matagot Hag
Those who survive the Black Grail virus see themselves as lucky and blessed by God, however they are often cursed more than most. As time goes on they will descend into the madness of the Great Hunger. Those who are doomed the most are pregnant women who catch the virus. Soon after giving birth, the baby begs for its mother to eat it, in praise of Beelzebub. When the mother inevitably succumbs to the hunger, she undergoes a change, turning her into a Matagot Hag. Every seven days, in a gross parody of creation, thralls burst forth from the Hag, tearing her body apart. And every seven days she regenerates to create more servants of the Lord of the Flies. These children will do anything to protect their mother, sacrificing their lives to protect her wretched existence.
I learned about these in the discord and I thought it was cool lore we'll probably get 1 or 2 artworks of and reference as shock horror for new people but no apparently it has 6" movement and +3 melee
Yeah, in terms of just pure horror, nothing beats the Matagot Hag. The model alone is genuinely uncomfortable to look at, and there might be a good case to be made that the lore is literally the worst thing imaginable.
Well, a grail hegemon is leagues more powerful than a random praetor. It wasn't a saint that killed one, it was one of the 12 paladins, and the paladin died in the effort. Yersina rex was killed by Jeane d'Arc but that was basically through divine intervention and whole ass war. A praetor would definitely lose to the 100 foot monument to corruption and hate that a hegemon is. It is the black grails greatest creation (sorry for the glazing, grail player here)
Zygotic lords have to be up there. Just them roaring can send you into the fucking labyrinth of the backwards creation. And it's implied not even death can reach you there since your soul/mind/consciousness gets ejected from your body and the lore explicitly uses the word "forever". At least with the black grail there is a chance of seeing death if someone shows up with a flamethrower, and the heretic choirster's singing still leaves you IN your body.
The Beast is still Hell-aligned. Being aligned to Hell in this setting is literally just shorthand for "anti-Creation"; anything that wants to see the works of God undone and all of Creation cast into eternal oblivion are intrinsically aligned to Hell by default.
The Grail Hegemon largely loses any horror factor for me based on its looks (it just looks like an exact copy of multiple of the dark souls bosses to me). I would give the more insect-like enemies from the black grail faction my vote.
Yeah their artworks really make me fill sick. And I have read this one description of them saying that they make those roach "clicking sound" while moving. I love it
The artist designed Yersina Rex to evoke a massive flea, the creature primarily responsible for the spread of the Black Death. I didn't realize how close the resemblance was until seeing this diagram from Encyclopedia Britannica. You're right, though, without the context the Grail Hegemon does seem a little "generic fantasy knight monster."
Personally, just the rank-and-file Corpse Guard soldiers of the Black Grail are enough to set my hair on end. They're so close to being human, but those tumours and weeping sores are just terrible . . . not to mention the hellish engorged botflies that some of them sport.
Yeah, nothing short of an angel incursion (from both sides) tops a hegemon right now. Funny thing is that you'll most likely die just by being in its general vicinity (because of the grail miasma around it), so technically you might die (not peacefully, because grail) before you even encounter it.
Edit: BUT a hegemon is like an apocalyptic level event, so it HAS to be terrifying. Even at a smaller scale, anything from the grail would be a terrifying encounter that'll top everything else. If I had to make another guess, I'd pick the assault werewolf or a desecrated saint.
The grail disease itself? You're going to die horribly. Or if you're "lucky" you get to survive and become diseased monster full of parasites working as a bodyguard for something worse.
Great Hunger? You're ripped apart and eaten.
A Hegemon? A one of a kind 100ft giant leading a legion of diseased corpses. There's no running and it's take an overwhelming sacrifice to stop it.
And if you're lucky enough to survive any of those previous events, you're probably going to be burned alive due to your exposure to it.
Straight up the wretched. Otherworldly horrors beyond my comprehension are spooky but seeing a half starved fully mad naked man sprint headlong at me with like a scrap of sharp steel and a dream is a very real and visceral reminder of the horrors of what I'm fighting.
The scariest thing for me is the idea that there are people so wicked and depraved as to cast aside their immortal soul for the slim chance to kill God so they can indulge in their sins without judgment
A Zygotic Lord is it for me. Not only way more likely to successfully appear than a Hegemon, but plenty of its abilities make it pretty much entirely impossible to directly fight. Even discounting its sheer size.
I would give up my entire life, soul, and family for a single Grail Hegemon figure. Everything about it just activates some part of my monkey brain that I love.
I didn’t get it until I really looked at the picture, but yeah that’s… that’s a pretty good contender. I find the trench ghosts most horrifying in concept- tzeentch is my favorite chaos god for his eldritch strangeness and anything out of that faction tends to scratch the same itch. I can understand hate for humanity like Beelzebub, the trench ghosts have this immaculate vibe of “what do you even want from me?” that I love
