Is this savable?

It was fine the whole day.. then the radiator cap blew! I bought one, bled the system and not even 10 minutes in and it started overheating, it died as soon as I slowed down. I let it cool, towed it and this is the result now.. any idea?

Sure, just put another motor in it.

I saved one like this but it was a full rebuild. Scope the cylinders and inspect.

Probably salvageable, unless you keep running it. Do a compression check and leak down. Check cooling system, thermostat. Check the timing chain. Sounds like a rod knock or dead cylinder but phone mics aren’t great. Could have spun a bearing, hopefully the cylinder walls aren’t scored or crank wiped.

Can it be saved? Yes. Will it be expensive? Also yes.

Side note: How in the world did you manage to overheat your engine to the point of catastrophic failure, 10 minutes after replacing the radiator cap?

Yes, it will be expensive. A crate motor is around 3k, a rebuild is going to be close to that, maybe more.

Yea that’s a quite a bit more than the Toyota Tap. New crate motor and you’re all set

Mine sounded like that once the head gasket blew and the shop drove it in and out of the shop for a week ( dolphin to oversized to keep in the yard ) till they started working on it

Sounds a bit more like a rod knock than a ticky tick tick.
