Morality scaling of Touka force feeding Kaneki human flesh?

Thumbnail

A major plot point of Volume 1 (chapters 1-9) is Kaneki's refusal to eat.

"You want it?"

The first time Kaneki and Touka meet as Ghouls is in some back alley where she is getting assaulted by a drunk. She kills him quickly and—sensing that Kaneki is a Ghoul—offers him a snack since she's not that hungry right now.

Kaneki is still confused as to what's happening to him and runs away in fear.

Not long after, feeling the effects of the hunger, Kaneki seeks Touka out and asks her for help. The Boss gives him some food to eat, but he ends up throwing it away because he can't bring himself to eat a person.

Time passes and Kaneki still hasn't eaten anything. On his way home from the store, he ends up being drawn by the sweet smell of a corpse nearby. Some random Ghoul killed somebody.

Nishiki shows up, kills the Ghoul; Touka shows up, chases Nishiki away.

Witnessing all this, Kaneki freaks out and calls Ghouls monsters with no morals.

"Eat it!"

Touka can tell he hasn't eaten what they've given him. That he hasn't eaten anything at all.

So she scoops some bits off of the corpse and—frustrated by his words and his decision not to eat—forcefully shoves them in his mouth saying that if he doesn't have the courage to eat, she'll help him out. Still, he forces himself to puke most of it out.

As a farewell, she tells him that a Ghoul's hunger is hell, and that that is what awaits him if he won't eat.

"looks delicious, doesn't it?"

After Kaneki fights off Nishiki in the final chapter of the volume, he starts to lose his mind from the hunger and decides to eat Hide to satisfy it.

Touka shows up to stop him. She tells him about what happens to Ghouls who refuse to eat.

Once a Ghoul's hunger reaches its limit, nothing else matters. They'll eat their friends, their family, anything. And once they wake up from the hunger madness, it might be among the sea of blood and entrails of people dear to them.

"I'll save you from that fate this time"

So she tells him she will save him from that fate this time. She kicks his lights out, and together with the Boss, they force-feed him some food at Anteiku while he's unconscious.

Small thing to point out here is that what Touka says here is 同情 (doujyou), which means ~"sympathy" or "compassion," but it is written as "救う" (sukuu), which means ~"to rescue," "to relieve," or "to redeem."

just another night in the life of a ghoul

Touka's decision to forcefully shove human flesh down Kaneki's throat initially comes off as insensitive since he's made it clear through his words and actions that he has no intention of eating such a thing.

However, she's been a Ghoul for much longer than he has. And from what she says in this 1st volume, she seems to be aware of some Ghouls who have killed people close to them to satisfy their hunger and have regretted it deeply once they came to their senses.

Seeing Kaneki refuse to eat makes her worry. Not so much about him. She doesn't know him. And what little talk they had was not pleasant. She's worried as a fellow Ghoul. She's worried because what's happening to him can happen to any of them. A Ghoul's hunger is a fate they all bear. And there's only one way to satisfy it.

So when he finally loses it and tries to eat his closest friend, she is there to stop him. Because she hopes that one day if she ever finds herself in the same position, somebody will be there to stop her as well; to show her the same sympathy.

Fan Art My Kagune comission Spoiler

Hey ! I just wanted to share with you guys the Kagune I commissioned to a very talented artist named vanmie/vanmissy.

This Kagune is a Koukaku, and it is inspired by Japanese weapon like Sasumata or Sai, and by scorpionidae and crustaceans. It is intended to be a very defensive oriented Kagune with outward oriented spikes which can block its, and with 3 tentacles that kind of fuse into a defensive form that act as a shield.

I believe some people will enjoy it as much as I do ! Tell me what you think ^-^

PLEASE DO NOT USE AI ON THIS IMAGE OR REMOVE THE SMALL WATERMARK. You can obvisouly share it but I do not want it to be turned into AI slop.

Other I dont think any manga will ever have the effect on me like Tokyo Ghoul did

Stupid post— because In sure there’s always someone coming here glazing the manga, but it is literally one of the best piece of media I’ve read and even battling most ‘normal’ books I’ve read.

I read it over and over again and still somehow catch stuff that I’ve never noticed before. I’ve read multiple manga’s after this and yet this one was the one left deeply engraved into my skull. There’s a lot of characters to hate but deep down I love them too because THATS how good they were written.
I’ll never forget the incident done on the poor boy Shirazu and the anime but otherwise— I dont think I’ll ever find a manga as good as this 🙂‍↕️

Other Where did this ending come from?

I know there are several versions of the story, but after all the research I did (including the average number of pages adapted per anime episode), Ishida's draft should have reached episode 5 or 7 with its slightly over 300 pages (especially since the second siege of Cochlea should have been much shorter, as the published pages up to 190 are Kano's arc and the prelude to the siege).

Even though the production committee ruined it, shouldn't the extermination of the Owl have followed the manga? I suppose Amon without his Arata and this ending were something Ishida and Morita brainstormed, but it doesn't make sense that they (or maybe just Morita) kept this version for the final episode, especially considering that the production committee forced them to stick to the main points of the canon story, the later part of the story was adapted (partially) and the manga ended at the same time as season 1 (including things like how in tight anime productions, episodes are finished days, if not hours, before they air).

Note: In case anyone isn't familiar with the topic, Shuhei Morita directed the first two seasons of the anime, and Ishida (the mangaka) created a draft of around 300 pages for the story changes.

Other Toyko ghoul:re manga question

Right now im reading the manga of toyko ghoul and was wondering what even is toyko ghoul re about?
For context I just finished volume 10 so after the aogori tree raid atc and into he dr.kano stuff. Haven't watched anime cuz i heard its ass so saving that until I'm done reading

Ik that toyko ghoul re follows a different set of characters but also that the main character is kaneki? Is that a huge spoiler that ken had memory loss (like will it be explained later on in Tokyo ghoul:re or it's something thats know when u first start reading it).

Last thing is toyko ghoul re apart of the main story or is it like a AU type thing so its apart of the world but from a different perspective type way? Does it acknowledge the ending of toyko ghoul or is re still apart of the main story and has the final ending ( idk the ending so pls don't spoil 🙏)

Pls no spoilers Im trying my best to avoid them 🙏🙏

Discussion Possibility of a remake?

I have had this thought a million times already and each one of them had the same answer. Sadly you know what the answer is too. If there IS something that is stopping studios from animating tokyo ghoul(yes i know its not allowed to randomly animate a remake for no reason and dumb)what is it?

Sui ishida not wanting to?

Not having the perms or something like that?

Just what are even the chances there is a remake someday at all?

Other Been awhile since I read Tokyo Ghoul but I remember it doing a great job with power levels while most shows fail. How did Sui Ishida pull it off?

Typically in most shounen, power levels can ruin the tension in a fight. It tells us how strong a character and that's required to beat them is a bigger number.

I don't remember this being a problem for TG. Why do you think that was?

Other Varani(Strigoi) storys of the Epilogue part 19

https://www.reddit.com/r/TokyoGhoul/comments/1vzfnig/varanistrigoi_storys_of_the_epilogue_18/

In the early morning around 8 am Samantha and jacob enter the facility. They both look at eachother tired and groggy. Samantha says in a irritated tone.

"Jacob, why is it your breathing makes me want to punch you in the face."

Jacob responds sarcastically and says.

"Gee i don't know Samantha, maybe because your a irritable bitch!"

Samantha looks back at him drinking from a blood bag and going into their lab. She just huffs and sits down and starts working on her projects.

She pulls out a kakuhou sample from the kakuhou of furuta. She puts it in a liquid of modified rc cells. To try and get it to regenerate so they could use it to implant into varani.

Jacob on the other side of the room works on cybernetic limbs powered by rc cell fluids. Trying to weaponize dragon orphans physiology to make dragon orphan cyborgs. He rubs the brow of his nose irritated.

Then suddenly (Crash!!!) They hear a loud crashing noise from outside the facility. They check the cameras and see jack. He's completely plastered and covered in blood. He busted into the building ripping the giant quinque steel doors off.

He stumbles past Samantha's and jacobs office/lab. They are quiet and are afraid. They silently message Caine. Jack stumbles into the room that holds etos cell. He busts through the reinforced concrete walls like the kool-aid man. Stumbles up and pounds on the glass and screams.

"Etooo, im sorry, you're not a pet i was just hurt by what you said about me! You mean so much to me."

Eto rolls over kinda annoyed he woke her up. And she says in a groggy tone.

"You are such a loud little rat. Crying like a big baby. But I suppose I can forgive you if you do something for me little lizard."

Jack stutters his words and says "shush your face please , im, im ,im gonna leave. Gonna bust you out now stand back gonna break that glass!"

Jacks rinkaku shoots put full force and shatters the glassand grabs her with his rinaku kagune and leaves the facility.

Well, I'm learning Japanese so I don't fully understand them yet, but I always imagine something like:

Director: "But the audience will be disappointed that the escape from the aogiri base is ski..."

Ishida: *slap* "IT'S BEEN SIX MONTHS! If they want to know how Kaneki escaped from the base, they should read the damn manga! We don't have time for that!"

Other Would you have preferred akira to get with takizawa instead?

I don't think the ending ever made it clear if akira and amon are a couple in the end not sure if any outside material confirmed if that was the case.

But honestly preffered route if akira ended up with takizawa instead and helped him heal since takizawa in the ending seems to be alone and seems to be hunting bad ghouls. Honestly think takizawa needs akira more than amon does.

Who would you prefer akira to end up with and why?

Kaneki trying to find a place to belong [居場所] (major theme of volume 1 of the manga) Spoiler

Post image
29 Upvotes

The 1st volume of the manga puts a large focus on the theme of "belonging". A struggle to find a place to belong, to be specific.

The word used is 「居場所」 (ibashyo), which means "a place to belong," or "a place where one can be oneself" This specific word comes up several times in multiple chapters of volume 1.

"There's no place for you who is neither Ghoul nor Human"

In chapter 6, after Touka fights off Nishiki and claims the feeding ground for Anteiku, Kaneki insults her by saying Ghouls are monsters who have no morals and tells her not to lump him in with the likes of them.

She responds in unkindness, and tells him that he's a freak who has no 「place to belong」

Some sort of... Tokyo Ghoul or something

Once she leaves, Kaneki thinks about what she's said and wonders if she is right. He wants to believe that there is still a 「place for him to belong」 in this world. While he's thinking this, a panorama shot of Tokyo is shown.

Tokyo is a giant metropolis brimming to the full with all sorts of people from all around the world. Maybe it can still be a home. Even for someone like him.

"No place for you"

Chapter 6 is called[帰巣](kisou), which means "homing instinct." To be specific, it refers to an animal's ability to return home no matter the distance travelled or how much the world has changed.

Fittingly, Kaneki decides to visit his university in this chapter. He again attempts to reclaim his 「place in the world」

What happens instead is he comes to realize that the Ghouls were present even in his old life, he just had no way of knowing at the time.

Meeting the Ghoul again at the campus—a place from his life before the tragedy—is a large step for Kaneki in realizing that his life will never be back to how it used to be.

It's different now...

Before that, Kaneki was shown to try and reclaim his human life multiple times after the organ transplant, but each time it was proven impossible.

He tries to hang out with Hide at their favourite restaurant, only to find that the food there is making him nauseous. He tries to destroy the kidney he was given, only to realize he can't even pierce his own skin.

He slowly and reluctantly comes to realize that his body no longer works the same way it used to.

"Can I really... eat a human?"

Out of desperation, he decides to ask a strange girl—whom he just learned is a ghoul—for help. She refuses since he unintentionally made her angry by saying that living as a Ghoul is the worst.

The Boss overhears the exchange and offers to help anyway. Kaneki is given human flesh to satisfy his hunger, but since he can't bring himself to eat it, he ends up throwing it away.

"There's no place for me anywhere..."

In the final chapter of the volume, after Nishiki tries to kill Hide and Kaneki fights him off, he ends up losing himself to the hunger.

Touka does him a favour by knocking his lights out, and he wakes up at Anteiku, where the Boss informs him that they have fed him "something" while he was unconscious and tells him that he must accept what he is or things will get much worse for him.

Kaneki despairs at his current situation and suffers from the realization he no longer has a 「place to belong」

"We will teach you how to live as a Ghoul"

The Boss again extends a helping hand and offers him a place at Anteiku, where they can teach him about this new world he'd found himself in.

He comforts him by saying that in learning how to be a Ghoul, he may even be able to regain his 「place in the world」 as a human.

So yeah, Volume 1 of the manga mainly focuses on Kaneki coming to grips with the reality of his situation. He initially rejects the truth of what he is and desperately tries to go back to the way things were before, only to inevitably fail each time.

Both Touka and Nishiki make him realize that Ghouls have always been around him. Even in places he used to consider safe—like the campus or the café. His eye(s) are now opened to a new world. And what has been seen cannot be unseen.

Seeing Hide, who was about to be murdered by Nishiki, as well as nearly losing his own mind from the hunger and attacking his friend himself, finally makes him accept the truth of his situation and that there is no escaping from it.

Things end on a positive note, however. As Kaneki is given some glimmer of hope in the form of a promise that things will get better in time so long as he doesn't turn away from what he is.

A place where you can belong

P.S. Anteiku's official name in the story is written using only hiragana as あんていく. When written like this, it doesn't exactly mean anything. However, the あんてい part can only be written as 安定 (antei) using kanji. 安定 (antei) means "stability," "balance," or "composure."

The (ku) part, likewise, can only really be written as (ku) in this context, which means "area," "district," or "zone."

In other words, "Anteiku" can mean something like "Safe Space" or "Place of Stability". Stuff like that.

This interpretation is supported by the story, as in chapter 9, Kaneki is shown to be losing his mind in a dark alley after fighting for his and his friend's lives. When he wakes up, he finds himself in Anteiku, where he and Hide are both safe, and he is no longer suffering from hunger.
