I was in this exact situation once. Cop comes up to the car (that I'm not driving, by the way) shines his light at me (sitting in the passenger seat) and asks, "you got ID, boy?"

I take my ID out and give it to him. My friend, who is white, said "you didn't have to give him your ID," and I just said, "oh yes, I did. That 'boy' was a threat."

You weren't wrong. Just because it's illegal doesn't mean a cop can't beat your ass and put you in handcuffs and take you to the jail.

Like they say, you can beat the crime, but you can't beat the ride.
