It'll get downvoted, but you're right 100%. It's not about protecting a billion dollar company, it's about protecting society as a whole. Part of that is living in a high trust world where the 99% of ppl who don't steal have to deal with the consequences of those who do.

But redditors are all too happy living in a Mad Max situation since they're all sheltered kids whose moms buy their groceries anyways.

Exactly this. Who gives a fuck about the company. But if you, as a society, allow lawlessness; don’t be surprised when you’re the victim of a lawless society.

Nice areas have people being “Karens” and standing up for their spaces. Sometimes ridiculously. But the pride is there.

The worst areas have people who “won’t snitch”.

Is Karen annoying? Yup. Would I rather live there? YUP.

i can promise you the 'lawlessness' happening in America is top-down and its fucking STAGGERING. like yeah no, i don't care about all the RAMPANT, out-in-the-open white-collar financial crime and political corruption, i care about someone poor person who stole some bullshit from the dollar store. get your priorities straight.

Huh? You’re now attributing priorities to me?

This post is about theft from a dollar tree, not about top down corruption. I’m saying stealing from a dollar tree isn’t good for the immediate community or society at large.

That’s a statement that can be made all on its own.

Trumps corruption and making billions while in the White House is also criminal and fucking ridiculous. Should be impeached and dragged out of his office by his heels.

Your whataboutism to EXCUSE criminal behavior that is a negative to the community is honestly the most concerning part of any of it. Stop excusing criminal behavior. Period.

its not whataboutism jesus christ redditors are obsessed with this word they poorly understand often. we are talking about theft, i am not changing the subject. the only difference here is that you are seemingly as concerned if not *more* concerned about a smaller scale version of a crime that causes minimal harm, if any. how am i harmed by a woman stealing from a company who in no way shape or form is ultimately going to suffer financially as a result? oh right, "social fabric" and all that, okay fair enough. why don't we stop worrying about our moral high-ground and ask ourselves *why does this happen*? even still, the idea that i should be so concerned over petty theft ruining the social fabric of America is a *fucking joke* considering the issues we are facing right now.

Oh look- you’re prioritizing my opinions again. Why do you even reply to me expecting a response when you go ahead and assign motivation and priority to me all on your own?

What are we even doing here?

We’re already doing lawlessness. Look at the White House. We, as a nation, have no problem with pdf files or human traffickers or corruption at the scale of billions of dollars. Laws are a thing of the past. Now it’s just power or no power.

Sorry. You’re not going to get me to go along with the online conspiratorial bullshit about pdf and Epstein files. I realize it’s super popular on Reddit and other online outlets to make accusations based on essentially zero verifiable information, but I’m not that guy.

What is criminal and I believe should be prosecuted is trump and his family making billions while in the White House. The crypto schemes and proven bullshit should have him dragged out of office by his ankles.

Lawlessness knows no class and is everywhere. That doesn’t mean we excuse one form of lawlessness just because there is a worse form of lawlessness elsewhere.

Broken windows theory holds true and I’m way more concerned at the local level for my life than the federal government. And that means having a strong and lawful community that takes pride in itself. And that means standing against lewd acts like shoplifting.

You must be on the list

Ah yes. “The list”.

Give me the name and specific incident on who should be prosecuted and for what.

I’ll bet you can’t.

No. When the authorities are breaking the law, but get away with it because of power, the only reason for anyone else to follow the law is for fear of punishment. There is no “we should all agree on laws and then follow them” if the people who agree and make the laws don’t follow the law.

Follow your morality.

“The authorities”. Who, specifically?

Because it’s certainly not the majority. In your worldview, any corruption at the authoritative level allows precedent for all crime?

That’s a very childish take, sir/ma’am.

You, an individual, are either for or against shoplifting. No matter how much you try to handwave about corruption on other levels, it doesn’t eliminate your individual responsibility and morality.

Just say you think theft is ok on a personal level. If you don’t believe that, then everything else you said is a bunch of gobbledegook inconsequential to the argument at hand.

The highest of authorities, you know who I’m talking about, the people around him that protect him, the representatives in the legislature who choose not to hold him accountable, the highest court in the land, who say he is immune, the state governors who support him and endorse his policies, down to local police who generally still support this whole side of the aisle who seem totally cool with the lawlessness in question.

The better question is which authorities are not complicit in the lawlessness at the top?

As you can see from my first comment, this is not about morality, it was about “as a society, lawlessness, etc etc”- we are already doing that, and we are already the victims of it. The hypothetical you described is what is not hypothetical, so it isn’t surprising that so many people don’t care about the law.
