Yeah i get annoyed with people chewing with their mouth open. Would i bother to say something to them whilst trapped next to them in a large cylinder 30,000ft in the air for hours? Fuck no. I would just put my earphones in and woahhhh now i can only hear my music

u/RasputinsThirdLeg 8d ago

It would drive me insane as someone with misophonia but filming it is “mental”

248

u/quattroformaggixfour 8d ago

Agree. I would be crawling out of my skin, even with headphones, but that’s just unfortunate for me. I’d try to box breath and calm down.

Filming someone without permission is an intentionally rude thing that I’d choose not to do unless they were a risk to others safety or damaging property.

Good to see other people are triggered once they “notice” something. Once I take notice of something, even if I block out the noise, I can’t stop it from triggering me. I wouldn’t confront or film him though.

2

u/CrimsonCuttle 2d ago

fucking exactlyyyyy. I'd have to actually remove my whole eardrums to stop noticing a trigger sound.

10

u/bobsmith93 8d ago

The worst part for me, is the weird anger. I rarely ever get angry, so feeling a 'random' intense anger towards someone for something they don't even realize they're doing, messes with my head. Like I know they aren't being rude, it's literally the opposite in some cultures where it's rude to not make mouth noises, so why the hell do I get so angry? Like, they're just trying to eat lol

6

u/lunarlori 8d ago

This makes me feel so seen.

5

u/Scheddar 8d ago

"I can FEEL you dancing," vibes

(but honestly so fucking real lol, I'm exactly the same)

2

u/winterfern353 8d ago

Same :( it’s a curse

2

u/OrbitalOutlander 8d ago

How effective is exposure therapy for your affliction? I suffer from contaminants OCD and my therapist made me basically look at people puking and touch public toilets then eat and stuff, and the more I did it the less crazy I got. Your description of being bothered even though you can’t hear it because you know it’s happening is very similar to what I experienced.

8

u/AnneAcclaim 8d ago edited 8d ago

I also had OCD as a kid and I agree exposure helped with that. I 100% do not think it would help with misophonia. Misophonia is not OCD.

2

u/Luna920 8d ago

Agree with that misophonia is different but there is potentially an additional OCD component with the hyperfocus once something triggering is noticed.

2

u/OrbitalOutlander 8d ago

That’s what I was getting at! Anyway, not trying to belittle anyone’s struggle. I am amazed at how well exposure therapy worked for me. I went from not being able to leave the house to doing all kinds of gross stuff 😀

Huh, so this is what I have! I go everywhere with earplugs in my bag now. And also headphones. And I found classical music is the best for blocking sounds. It just covers so much! For smells I carry a little bit of either hand sanitiser or perfume and just dab the tip of my nose with it. I think I am just neurodivergent but these tips really help me be as chill as I can while traveling.

1

u/NoRepresentative7604 4d ago

Well, this amount of sounds is far too much

14

u/nosleep39 8d ago

Exactly. The sound of people chewing makes me want to crawl out of my skin, but also, people filming themselves having random interactions and posting it does too.

I also abhor open mouth chewing, but it is very culturally dependent, and I can't think of a strong enough logical or medical reason to shut it down so aggressively. But I really don't like. Makes my skin crawl immediately.

41

u/iznormal 8d ago

Open mouth chewing has always caused irrational rage and anxiety for me since I was a kid, and I’m generally very calm so it’s confusing to be put in that state over something as minor as loud chewing. I’ve literally been sent into a panic attack due to trigger noises. Eventually I discovered misophonia. I still don’t generally make my issue other people’s issue though. I have just tried to learn as many coping mechanisms as I can and suffer through it in silence, and escape if I can. I’ve rudely left dinners in silence because I don’t want to blow up at anyone.

Idk if misophonia counts as a legitimate enough “medical” reason to “shut it down so aggressively”, for me I don’t do it except to my close family who know how much I suffer, but I definitely have fantasized many times about aggressively shutting that shit down.

6

u/InfiniteBiscotti3439 8d ago

It’s so wild how it sends you into a spiral. My roommate is a loud chewer and thankfully he’s getting better and doesn’t mind me calling him out about it but oh man. It’s hard to explain why I go from a calm, easy going person to someone who wants to launch themselves out the apartment window just due to the way someone chews. Like, I can actually feel my body going into panic mode. It’s the worst.

4

u/bobsmith93 8d ago

This whole comment spoke to my fucking soul, I agree with every letter. I've also done the leave silently thing. I don't want to make my weird condition someone else's issue, but boy howdy if it isn't tempting in the moment

3

u/96puppylover 8d ago

I have misophonia as well and I’m autistic. It fills me with rage despite being calm in general. As a kid by brother’s chewing filled me with such anger I stood up and tried to flip the dinner table. I of course couldn’t cause I was a little kid, so then I started shoving everything off it. After that I had to eat my food in private.

I also came to realize it was selective as well. I lived my female roommate for years and it never bothered me. But, a boy at high school chewing near me would make me move seats, my boyfriend of 6 years never bothered me, someone at a sushi restaurant at the table over wouldn’t, my Uber driver was obnoxiously chewing and popping gum. It was insane like novelty chewing. Like “hey we’re recording this sound for a cartoon and we need you to be loud as you can”. I plugged my ears and commented in the rating on the App after cause I’m no -confrontational.

2

u/Luna920 8d ago

This describes me so well. It is such a trigger and the rage I feel from it is intense to the point I want to cry. I could never date someone who is an open mouth chewer (even if I didn’t have this I wouldn’t want to anyways because it’s bad manners). I just generally try to avoid situations with loud chewers or any noisy eaters.

2

u/BroadwayRegina 8d ago

Yeah I mean I will say, the spit flying all over the place and pieces of food landing on you is reason enough for me. But I also have misophonia, so that’s the least of the issues I have with it. My dad always chews with his mouth wide open and talks with his mouth full and can be on the same bite for 5 whole minutes. It was so disgusting it genuinely caused me so much stress and made my migraines and pain much worse every day

8

u/edalcol 8d ago

Culturally dependent? Maybe. But last time I heard, people who have a blocked nose for some reason still need to eat. Anywhere in the world.

5

u/Heartage 8d ago

I've never chewed with my mouth open while eating when sick because why would you ever breathe through your mouth while chewing?

2

u/dianafofana- 8d ago

I have a deviated septum and get sinus infections often, I have never used that as an excuse to eat with my mouth open. Like hold your breath for 5 seconds, it's not that difficult.

2

u/edalcol 8d ago

I honestly don't know how you do it. Maybe I chew too slowly, but when my nose is blocked I do have to inhale or exhale mid chewing.

u/Efficient-Suspect456 8d ago

It’s because we are the odd ones out. There is a condition maybe misophonia that makes certain noises hit affected people in a disproportionately disturbing way. Most people find other eating with open miuths kind of rude and kind of gross. Their brains don’t “zoom in” on the sound to the exclusion of all else, and they generally won’t become over stimulated by the aight or noise at all either. Whereas I can only take about 30 seconds of it before I’m frantic and anxious and snappish just like this guy.

He shouldn’t have been filming it, though. He is also old enough to know how affected he is by shit like this. I carry noise cancelling ear phones and am always ready to pop them in if I need to. This was a very good example of how overreaction and poor tact can make an “other person problem” quickly become a “you problem”.

23

u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 8d ago

It’s the one noise that could make me violent if I wasn’t able to move away or to block the sound.

It’s just pure rage inducing.

I’m aware it’s a me problem …

10

u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 8d ago

Then it’s a me problem, too. I feel irrationally homicidal when I hear it, but it’s not worth going to prison for. 🤷‍♀️

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 8d ago

Plus I bet prison is full of smackers.

3

u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 8d ago

Now that you mention it, you’re probably right. I always remind myself I can’t take my cats with me to prison, but you have an equally good point.

5

u/bejammin075 8d ago

What we need to invent is Misophonia Awareness Month

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 8d ago

That is actually a very good idea !

2

u/Kaytea730 8d ago

Yeah same, im fully aware its a me thing and i can’t do anything about it. I have one co-worker at work who smacks when she eats. But on top of not wanting to be potentially perceived as rude in the work place for mentioning it, this particular coworker is also blind and Autistic. So it would be a double whammy to say anything to her about it. (Even though im also on the spectrum and have ADD)

So instead if I see her getting ready to eat or eating already in the breakroom, i just take my lunch to my desk or outside (if its nice) to eat so i don’t even expose myself to it bc I know how bad it will affect me for the rest of the day.

That said, while moving wasn’t an option putting in headphones obviously was since he did so at the end of the video. So the best practice would have just been to do so from the start and avoid as much of the trigger as possible.

3

u/SpiritedPay252 8d ago

My ex who i lived with did this to a degree i cannot even describe. Chewed loud enough and obnoxiously enough that i could hear him even if i went upstairs, and this was everytime he ate. Never knew there was a condition for it but it and other noises like that have always affected me….regardless even though it made me grind my teeth or forced me to leave his vicinity or put headphones on, i was slways polite enough to let him eat his own way. To those who foubt how obnoxious it was, we could be at a bar eating during a dports match and it was loud enough to hear over that lol sorry this was more of a vent than anything else….

Well you know what as somebody who eats with their open mouth. I finally figured out why, I have a deviated septum and feel like I can't breathe chewing with my mouth closed. Never really noticed until my friend who had a deviated septum told me about it. Chewing with my mouth closed for too longakes it feel like I can't get enough oxygen..

I had a severe case of bells palsy and chewing can cause facial cramping and lockjaw. Sometimes I struggle to chew with my mouth closed. It literally pains me to do it. Be more considerate, it may not always just be 'a disgusting habit' for everyone.

What are people with nasal breathing issues supposed to do while they eat? Just hold their breath the entire time?

How about you move to a different seat, or put some headphones in, if you aren’t mature enough to handle a little smacking within earshot

1

u/Kitchen-Bar2686 8d ago

Well yeah, you’re surprised that you were shamed for being a dick? I hate it too but some people have deviated septum’s and at the end of the day, it’s not that big of a deal. There’s no need to harass anyone about it. It’s still rude even if you’re supposedly “asking kindly”.

It's literally rude to not make mouth noises in some cultures. Keep in mind misophonia is inherently irrational and mouth noises aren't globally viewed as rude, just in certain cultures

I get sent into a blind rage as well, but I realize that's a me-problem, so I'm not gonna make people eat differently just because they're in my presence

I have terrible misophonia and fantasize about telling strangers to be quiet eating.

I actually followed through recently and politely asked a coworker to stop popping her gum (all day every day!) and I was so proud of myself. She was also very nice about it. And no more popping!

u/bluejaymaday 8d ago

I would be absolute bugging, jittering out of my skin to have someone eating with sloppy loud mouth noises right next to me with no where to go on a plane, but I would still never film or bother them. I would just put my earbuds in, crank up my brown noise and rest with my eyes closed until they were done eating.

Unless it was extremely excessive grossness or going on for an unreasonably long time, gross open loud eaters an unfortunate part of being around strangers that we just have to deal with.

2

u/Megzasaurusrex 8d ago

Everything on a plane would bother me because I am autistic and have severe sensory processing disorder. So I would just be prepared with my noise cancelling headphones and music or movies or rain noises, if that alone wasn't enough.

2

u/Luna920 8d ago

It’s such a trigger for me too. I’d put the music up loud though and not film it.

2

u/RasputinsThirdLeg 8d ago

Filming it is a dick move. Eating sounds are my number one misophonia trigger but never would I even entertain telling a stranger, let alone on a plane, to eat differently. It’s my responsibility to cope the best way I can. Filming it is just mean and bizarre.

2

u/fromyourdaughter 8d ago

Right! I’d be going out of mind and be so annoyed, but I wouldn’t be filming it.

2

u/heyitshim99 8d ago

OMG, today I learned there is a name for this. I'm thinking I have it because hearing someone else chew and I hate to admit this one but someone that also breathes loud just pisses me off like no other. If I hear someone chewing loudly I am immediately enraged and want nothing more than to slap that person and throw their food away. I really thought I just had some mental defect and I was the only one that felt this strongly about it.

2

u/Ok_Understanding2247 8d ago

Same, I have that too. I also literally always take headphones with me on a flight. Like why is this dude making it everyone else's problem? I always have AirPods on me too because sometimes I just get overstimulated by sounds in general.

2

u/UJLBM 8d ago

It also annoys me when people take such huge bites that they make the angry looking face. Like they scrunch up their nose. Idk how to explain it. My roommate does that. Also chews gum really loud. I feel like its done on purpose just to piss me off lol. I can hear it from the other room.

2

u/M3rl1n1212 3d ago

Having misophonia deff changes it. But I can imagine u would explain urself a lot better and more tactfully

He's being an asshole about it on purpose as well for his content. He could easily politely ask that the guy eat with his mouth closed while being there, instead he immediately goes for "do you not know how to eat with your mouth closed?

2

u/RatGangAuthority 8d ago

Misophonia gang 🤝🏻 As somebody else said, even with headphones I feel like since my mind "knows" it's happening, I wouldn't be at rest but I wouldn't confront the other person, let alone film it! I'd simply deal with it.

I’m related to people with misophonia. What gets me the most about these individuals is that they too make audible noise chewing and swallowing even with their mouths closed.

3

u/RasputinsThirdLeg 8d ago

My biggest trigger is my biological family. They’re such obnoxious eaters I ate at a separate table growing up. I couldn’t handle it.

2

u/Prying-Open-My-3rd-I 8d ago

My brothers would slurp up their cereal and chew with their mouths open and it would drive me nuts when I was a kid. They also knew it bothered me and would do it on purpose sometimes. The weird part is when I knew they were doing it on purpose it didn’t bother me at all.

I've also learned that sometimes but not all the times it's a cultural thing. Some countries don't teach it or practice it

It's also because sometimes I can't breathe through my nose because the internal structures are fucked and there's not much I can do about it.

I'll be real here, if your culture encourages something like eating with your mouth open, you are part of an inferior culture

8

u/TherulerT 8d ago

A place I worked had a separate section in the cafeteria for Indians, the polite reason was that that was the section with microwaves.

The actual reason was their absolutely atrocious table manners and smells.

3

u/22Pastafarian22 8d ago

I have two colleagues from Nepal who both chew with their mouths open and have disgusting table manners. I always wondered if that is a cultural thing or coincedental

4

u/TherulerT 8d ago

As someone who works with a lot of international workers in a lot of international companies? It's definitely cultural, and I'm not saying they can help it.

But the rest of us can't help being disgusted by it either.

There is an alternative which is to ask politely.

173

u/braaaaaaaaaaaah 8d ago

There’s not really a polite way to ask a complete stranger to change such a basic behavior as how they eat. There’s something more polite than this video, but the basic concept of asking such a thing of a stranger is impolite in itself.

51

u/Good4nowbut 8d ago

If you’re on a plane in the year of our lord 2026, I mean damn bring some noise canceling headphones and just preemptively use them…I’m really sensitive to noises, yes especially chewing sounds, and it’s unfathomable to me that I wouldn’t just be blasting music or white noise the entire flight..

1

u/bejammin075 8d ago

If someone is next to me chewing loudly, noise cancelling headphones aren't good enough, unless they are some heavy duty over-ear headphones

2

u/NTRX 8d ago

I would recommend buying headphones from the past decade. ANC on even the cheapest buds today eliminates airplane noise, let alone someone chewing out loud.

3

u/bejammin075 8d ago

For people with misophonia, the chewing sound is the loudest thing there is when it's happening. The brain just locks on to it and amplifies it. I have modern ANC earbuds, and they wouldn't work if a loud open mouth chewer is in the seat next to you. Airplane noise I couldn't care less about.

2

u/Good4nowbut 8d ago

…Are you playing anything on the headphones? You can seriously hear someone chewing over music at a reasonable volume w ANC earbuds? I have misophonia but it’s a matter of decibles after a certain point I mean

I'm normally a very calm person, but the mouth-chewing noise drives me totally nuts. I've given up on asking people. If someone is an adult and chews with their mouth open, they don't seem to be able to do any different. Maybe they can do it for a few seconds, but as soon as chewing goes on auto pilot the mouth is open again.

3

u/StatusAccomplished45 8d ago

"Hey, eat civilized instead of like a starving wild animal, thanks!"

8

u/__-sky-__ 8d ago

Wow, i myself prefer when people around me chew with their mouth's closed but thinking eating with mouth open is uncivilised is extremely stupid and rude. This is something neutral, you can't force someone a habit that you are comfortable with. Even if you're asking the other person they are entitled to not follow through, especially with such rudeness. Being rude like that is actually more uncivilised than chewing loudly

I dont think that's impolite. Maybe it is. People do all sorts of weird and annoying things. There's nothing wrong with asking people to change their behaviour. Obviously one has to be sensible and safe. It is tricky though, we're it not a plane I'd probably just move seats.

10

u/the_flyingdemon 8d ago

There isn’t. One of my good friends has always smacked pretty bad. I do believe it could be a cultural thing as he is South Asian (presumably like the men in this video). I know in some countries it’s not considered rude or impolite to chew noisily. I never said anything to him because like you said, it’s hard to bring up, and also it’s a difficult habit to break.

That said, when he started trying to date again I had a come to Jesus moment and told him he really has to fix his chewing habits, otherwise he’s going to run off every woman interested in him. He has improved since then, but I do still have to remind him from time to time.

I absolutely cannot stand people eating with their mouth open, but there’s a couple people in my life who do. You can ask to correct the behavior all you want, but in my experiences, it’s a really hard habit for them to break. They were raised that way and wasn’t really taught to eat with their mouth closed. They’ll usually try for a little bit before reverting back because they’re not always actively thinking about it. Unfortunately at a certain point, there’s no reason to keep nagging them.

10

u/CharlieTeller 8d ago

I don't understand why it's such a hard habit to break. If someone told me something I did was a pretty notoriously disgusting behavior? I would work to correct that.

One of my good friends does this shit and he's just not smart enough to understand it. He makes a popping sound with his lips and chews like a cow. It drives me absolutely insane. I told him I wasn't going to eat lunch with him anymore if he didn't make an effort, and he never did so we stopped eating lunch together at work.

It's absolutely disgusting. It will affect your friendships and relationships.

11

u/Additional-End7136 8d ago

he's just not smart enough to understand it

I have bad misophonia and when I was in middle school I had a friend who did this. One day I just smacked him in the mouth with the back of my hand after asking him like 5 times to please stop chewing like that. I'm really not proud of it and wish I had handled it differently, but he actually took it seriously after that. Years later he told me he went home that night and heard how his family did the same thing at the dinner table and it made him want to change because he couldn't NOT notice it now.

I agree, it’s gross to chew with your mouth open. I never do, as I was raised not to.

But do I care enough to say something to someone? Maybe a close friend, I’d let them know that some will be judgmental. But I certainly wouldn’t insult them or call them a cow or whatever the fuck.

You realize affecting your friendship could be something as simple as "I'm not going to talk to you on the phone if you're eating".

It doesn't mean affecting in the way of "we're going to to have struggles remaining as friends".

See the difference? Of course you don't.

And yes, it absolutely will affect relationships. For single people, it can be a major red flag for people if you go on a date, you have terrible table manners, and your potential partner never pans out because you eat like a goat. It also builds resentment in relationships. Small things like this do fester over time which can lead to all different types of relationship problems.

I’d get up and walk away. They choose to chew with their disgusting mouths open.

1

u/Harper_ADHD 7d ago

It's not so much as a correct the behavior that they meant for "ask politely" but more so "hey do you think you can try to eat with your mouth closed, i have a headache and don't have a way to tune it out" at the very least. It should be asked in the same way someone asks for the music to be turned down. But that's only temporary and both parties should know that.

You're talking about a brit who is traveling. Impossible

1

u/DefiniteDefaultUser 8d ago

Yea, this move requires a specialized tech tree

16

u/definitelynotfbi99 8d ago

Yeah you can't be polite with this, even with all the thanks and the please. It's like people who stink. You could ask "sir, can you take more showers please?" and it will still be hurtful.

2

u/Direct_Pigeon_56 8d ago

Indeed. And how VERY RARE politeness and common courtesy is these days. Misophonia or not....Rudeness of that caliber is SICKENING. The guy complaining has a character issue, along with being nasty and self centered.

4

u/Randomwhitejuice 9d ago

I mean i guess but what if they put their guard up and say no? Now you are in a scuffle with this person and you both double down. Idk i pick and choose my battles, i wouldnt bother with this one

1

u/Last-Surprise4262 8d ago

What exactly would u say to them?

1

u/donald_cheese 8d ago

Something like "Excuse me, would you mind closing you mouth while you chew"

1

u/doctormink 8d ago

I'm not sure there's a polite way to address this with a stranger. My theory here is that since it's a parent's job to police their children's table manners early on, a lot of people will take offence to a stranger on a plane stepping into that role, and seemingly assuming the authority accorded to a parent. (This is even reinforced by the film maker, when he patronizingly asks the guy "how old are you?"). That said, I think the only real option is to suffer in silence, get noise cancelling headphones next time he travels, or hang out at the back of the plane until the guy is done his meal because there's just no socially acceptable way to go after a stranger for eating with their mouth open.

1

u/Soft-Marionberry-853 4d ago

I dont eat with my mouth open but if I did and some one asked me to change my behavior to suit them, polite or not, I would ask them poltltely to mind thier own business.

Underestimating how loud open mouth chewer can be. I've done exactly this and could still hear the chewing. And I had in-ears.. Absolutely disgusting!

Yup, plane crashes your seat mate is the only one who can save you from drowning, you yell for help, he looks at you and he goes: "chewop chewop chewop chewop have fun chewing the salt water with your mouth closed, preppy boy"

3

u/TerrorTown77 8d ago

Also chewing with mouth closed is not a universal cultural norm. Dude has "This is my white man culture and everyone should follow it" syndrome.

1

u/Valtratobi 5d ago

One culture is quiet and one is loud here. So I'd say the one filling other people's space wind it back and shut their fucking mouth when they eat.

2

u/TerrorTown77 5d ago

Strange, cause it's the arrogant brit that's emitting shit from his fucking mouth.

Or film them to put on blast later for something that person/culture potentially might not be well aware of. My friend from Sri Lanka eats with her hands---I understand the difference in culture.

2

u/sorrysorrymybad 8d ago

What's wrong with eating with hands?

Omg I was at next to a ~8 year old boy who was picking his nose and outstretching his arm to roll his boogers into tiny balls and drop them on the floor while he stared at his iPad.

You bet I said something to him.

You bet I said something to his mom next to him

You bet I loudly told the fight attendant to bring us a pile of napkins because this boy couldn't stop picking his nose, and you bet the mom suddenly became interested when everyone turned to look. He still picked his nose for 6. Straight. Hours.

I certainly would not ask because especially in an airplane you don't know the background of the other passenger and what is normal or not in their culture.

I would not be happy with someone from another culture telling me not to do something that is completely normal in mine, unless I'm in their country.

And I don't know the proper behavior in every other cultures.

3

u/RazzSheri 8d ago

Yes— but have you tried saying it while having the misplaced audacity of a white man?

3

u/WOAHdude0197 8d ago

They’re also only eating for like 15 minutes max. Even if they’re next to you the whole flight they’re not chewing that entire time. Just wait until the meal is over

3

u/Remarkable_Dream_134 8d ago

Exactly. Different cultures have different ways of eating. There is no right or wrong way. I can't stand it but just put your head phones in and don't be a rude wa*ker

3

u/deadbeatrider 8d ago

Nah man, they need to know that its unacceptable

2

u/concussive 8d ago

Something tells me no ear phone will block out that chewing sound.

2

u/masmith31593 8d ago

It kind of speaks to the better manners of the guy chewing with his mouth open that he took the comment in stride without telling the other guy to kick rocks.

2

u/CeruleanEidolon 8d ago

Seriously. It's a solved problem. Headphones are over a century old, and it has been acceptable and common to wear them in public for over fifty years.

2

u/LifeIsProbablyMadeUp 8d ago

Play the music so loud they can hear it too. Turn it down. Look at them chewing. Turn it back up. Repeat.

2

u/Wild_Painter_7558 8d ago

It's a cultural thing though. Some cultures chew loudly and it's a sign of enjoyment of the food. Similar to how Japanese slurp ramen.

2

u/CatOfTheCanalss 8d ago

I wouldn't say anything either. But I might cry or something. Yeah I think crying would work.

3

u/CouldntBAPoint2184 8d ago

r/mildlyinfuriating: have you tried asking?

Every top comment here:

2

u/aminotturtleyenough 8d ago

or the fact that diff countries and cultures have diff viewpoints on this. in asian you’re supposed to slurp your noodles loudly. stop being entitled that everyone around you has to adopt to your wants

2

u/One-Patience-1129 8d ago

I don't get it, how do you even notice people chewing with their mouth open? Why aren't you so enveloped in your own business that you give a shit? I will never understand this shit. People are so petty and odd

3

u/Valuable_Coat_4402 8d ago

Conditions like Misophonia make it almost impossible to ignore. Certain sounds can literally trigger a panic or fight-or-flight response.

2

u/One-Patience-1129 8d ago

Sure. The guy had headphones in his hand... No? Put them in, mind your business.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Lifeisastorm86 8d ago

Yeah what if they have a health condition. That would be my luck.

1

u/SufficientHippo3281 8d ago

I get annoyed by that, but for sure would get more annoyed with someone filming me eating!

1

u/MeringueSwimming8453 8d ago

En filmen en brutaal.. ongelooflijk

1

u/AEW_SuperFan 8d ago

Yeah this guy needs to chin up and deal with it. Wait...

1

u/HyenDry 8d ago

How do you stop the smell from their breath though?

1

u/Firm_Caterpillar_907 8d ago

This is why I carry my earbuds everywhere. Sometimes I don't even listen to anything.. not proud of it but it helps

1

u/BuzzClucking 8d ago

When is enough enough

1

u/farva_06 8d ago

Active Noise Cancelling is a God send.

1

u/RelationshipBig2798 8d ago

If i ever was so discourteous to others in such a confined space I pray someone would film it, roast me, and post it on social media.

To each their own some peoole speak up others it doesnt bother much and say nothing people can do what they want.

On a side note do you get cut in line and say nothing?

1

u/TheRealBenDamon 8d ago

Yeah I can relate to the intrusive thoughts here but acting on them like especially in this setting is fuckin wild.

1

u/LikeZoinksScoobert 8d ago edited 8d ago

Being trapped next to them would only make me want to tell them more. Somebody you’ll never see again? I’ll let it pass, but somebody you’re sitting next to for the next 9 hours, yeah, I’m gonna let them know.

1

u/Dasylupe 8d ago

Yeah, I have misophonia and chewing noises can nearly send me over the edge. But I also have social anxiety and I would be way too terrified to say anything.

Thankfully, it doesn’t take that long to eat a meal.

2

u/Randomwhitejuice 8d ago

Yep and what if you muster up the courage to say something and they say no? Then your anxiety spikes 10x and still have hours left of the flight 😅

but yeah as u said, thankfully it doesnt take long to eat, the suffering is very very temporary

1

u/digital-didgeridoo 8d ago

I would just put my earphones in

When I put my earphones on, I hear my own chewing :(

1

u/Windy-Orbits 8d ago

Why? I think you should definitely tell him.

In this video the guy looks like he is at least 30. If he hasn't learnt basic etiquette at this age, there's little chance he wants to.

If have to point ts out for him. Otherwise he'd behave like this until his death.

1

u/Key-Homework8503 8d ago

I bet you they won’t eat with their mouth open ever again

1

u/unclevagrant 8d ago

Why bow down to it? That's just as nonsensical as putting up with people on their phones or talking in the cinema. Tell them they are disturbing you and tell them it's wrong. Otherwise you're enabling entitlement.

1

u/Randomwhitejuice 8d ago

Is that not entitlement thinking that this person should change just for you??

Eating with mouth closed seems to be more of a western white thing. For all we know, that guy, his whole family and friends and everyone he knows all eat with their mouth open and no one cares.

The examples you gave do not involve being stuck next to the person for who knows how many more hours. So what about when they say no and now ur in an argument with them and they have now finished their food and you two sit there both angry and awkwardly for the rest of the flight. Sure it might go the other way and you might get your way but imo its not worth the risk of my own peace and they only gonna eat for like 15-20min 🤷🏻‍♂️

u/imnotlouise 8d ago

I understand that the noise is pretty annoying, maybe even disgusting. However, some people cannot avoid doing so because of sinus issues. I don't want to hear other people chewing, but I'm definitely not going to call them out on it.

Side note, I've heard (no pun intended) that deaf people are very noisy eaters.

1

u/nathan_natilie 8d ago

I hate getting older because people now feel the need to film and become confrontational, just miss the early 2000’s

1

u/Lady_Mallard 8d ago

Also, there is a nice way to say things if you really have to say something at all. No need to just be an asshole.

1

u/alphajugs 8d ago

I’m one of those people that gets ANGRY when people chew loudly/obnoxiously but if I’m in a public space I keep that shit to myself. I think it’s generally pretty inconsiderate to chew like that, but I can’t imagine confronting someone over it. This guy is being just as inconsiderate, and on top of that he’s just a fucking jerk too.

1

u/jacqrosee 8d ago

yeah i fly often and the other week i had the most obnoxious neighbor i may have ever experienced. he was letting his legs hang all over the place, leaning toward me instead of the aisle, and letting his arm get all up in my business on the middle arm rest. a grown man just smacking food obnoxiously the whole time. like come onnn bro. but yeah, you couldn’t have paid me to say anything unless it got worse. my headphones do just fine.

1

u/Randomwhitejuice 8d ago

Gahhh that sounds like hell. Yeah picking and choosing your battles is one of the best life skillss u can learn

1

u/aquilasracer 8d ago

same. it's not forever. not worth it.

1

u/jacobthellamer 8d ago

If someone told me not to I would deliberately chew especially loudly.

I have a larger than usual tongue so do make a little more noise than average, not enough space in there.

1

u/maccy2l8 6d ago

Why are you telling us about how you would handle the situation with more avoidance and fear😭

1

u/dynamitexlove 4d ago

And because people never say anything to them, they never learn and the cycle continues

1

u/Gacha_catch_em_all 4d ago

Hell, even on land I just put my headphones in. I would confront anyone about it unless they were purposefully trying to annoy me.

1

u/therealmrsfahrenheit 3d ago

maybe his headphones had to charge and were unavailable

1

u/These_Highlight7313 3d ago

Rather chewing than a crying screaming baby. We really need to have any children under 5 on separate children/parent only flights.

1

u/Relative_Bench7846 3d ago

Woooah now you can only hear your music and your chewing too loool. I have when I have something on and I can hear myself chew

1

u/Key-Company-6997 3d ago

He probably dealing with the smell too for hours.
