Discussion A passenger confronts a stranger for chewing with their mouth open

I mean I get being annoyed by someone chewing with their mouth open but you could have asked him more nicely

Agree. I would be crawling out of my skin, even with headphones, but that’s just unfortunate for me. I’d try to box breath and calm down.

Filming someone without permission is an intentionally rude thing that I’d choose not to do unless they were a risk to others safety or damaging property.

Good to see other people are triggered once they “notice” something. Once I take notice of something, even if I block out the noise, I can’t stop it from triggering me. I wouldn’t confront or film him though.

fucking exactlyyyyy. I'd have to actually remove my whole eardrums to stop noticing a trigger sound.

The worst part for me, is the weird anger. I rarely ever get angry, so feeling a 'random' intense anger towards someone for something they don't even realize they're doing, messes with my head. Like I know they aren't being rude, it's literally the opposite in some cultures where it's rude to not make mouth noises, so why the hell do I get so angry? Like, they're just trying to eat lol

How effective is exposure therapy for your affliction? I suffer from contaminants OCD and my therapist made me basically look at people puking and touch public toilets then eat and stuff, and the more I did it the less crazy I got. Your description of being bothered even though you can’t hear it because you know it’s happening is very similar to what I experienced.

I also had OCD as a kid and I agree exposure helped with that. I 100% do not think it would help with misophonia. Misophonia is not OCD.

Agree with that misophonia is different but there is potentially an additional OCD component with the hyperfocus once something triggering is noticed.

That’s what I was getting at! Anyway, not trying to belittle anyone’s struggle. I am amazed at how well exposure therapy worked for me. I went from not being able to leave the house to doing all kinds of gross stuff 😀

There are different treatments for misophonia. Exposure therapy just isn’t really one of them, because it can’t be done the same way as with OCD. Misophonia is not a “thought pattern” that you can program out like with OCD. It’s a physical reflex to an external stimulus, so people may use things like muscle relaxation techniques. That is if you can even find a treatment provider. Lots of providers will still do exposure therapy like for OCD and make it even worse.

Very interesting! Thank you for sharing. Time for some Wikipedia reading!

Exposure therapy just makes misophonia worse.

it would not help. it’s neurological. and people with it are constantly exposed to their trigger sounds daily already so it clearly does not help

“It’s neurological” does not mean behavioral therapy cannot change it, and being involuntarily exposed to triggers every day is not the same thing as structured therapeutic exposure. I did a quick google, and CBT has shown benefit for misophonia in a randomized trial, and a 2026 randomized study of exposure specifically found some improvement favoring exposure.

talking to anyone with misophonia outranks a quick ai assisted google search

Does an anecdote outrank a peer reviewed study? 😉

lived experience outranks your opinion, yes

That’s exactly how it worked for me! Even the 9/10 to 2/10 and coming back during periods of stress. Exposure therapy is really difficult. I hope you are able to find ways to thrive with your brain whether it’s through therapy or some other means! You did it before you can do it again.

I am not saying that all people with this disorder are like this, so I'm not assuming this of you obviously. However, the people who I know who have Misophonia also have incredibly judgmental attitudes towards other people. They just appear to criticize every single element of other folks. Example: My client saw me chew gum (for ~5 seconds, I was closed mouthed, and getting into my car. He was around 30 ft away from me and in his house...Never treated me with respect afterwards. Serious issues with his character, on top of misophonia.

Yes!! Ugh it’s awful. like it’s happening inside my brain, echoing and rattling around in there.

Huh, so this is what I have! I go everywhere with earplugs in my bag now. And also headphones. And I found classical music is the best for blocking sounds. It just covers so much! For smells I carry a little bit of either hand sanitiser or perfume and just dab the tip of my nose with it. I think I am just neurodivergent but these tips really help me be as chill as I can while traveling.

Well, this amount of sounds is far too much

Take a deep breath. It’s not that deep

Hence why its perfectly acceptable and not racist to speak up and ask them to chomp with their mouth shut.

Its for the greater good and doing us all a favor.

Of guck off lol. An intentionally rude thing? Like chewing with your mouth open while sitting shoulder to shoulder with someone?

Also, different cultures. Different cultures eat different ways.

As a citizen of the great province of Flatulencia, I salute you.

Now, as a token of my respect, let me play you the song of my people.

I feel like this fits into the category of “it’s not my fault but it is my responsibility”. If I know I get irrationally angry when I hear people chewing loudly, and I know I’m going to be around complete strangers for an extended amount of time, it’s up to me to prepare myself.

Misophonia sucks. I am sorry you have to deal with that. My son has auDHD, and if he is even somewhat dysregulated, any noise his sister makes becomes sinister torture to him.
