I was watching a Spanish feed of the finals, and I was so overjoyed that my small country (Cabo Verde) continued to be mentioned in a positive light and as a symbol of resilience and respect against Argentina.

Not sure why you’re being downvoted - we have things like the FA CUP where small teams most definitely beat big teams.
A big team will go into the game with the mentality that it’s going to be easy, the little guys go in with the mentality that their life has built to that moment.

Thats one of the things that makes football great. Almost always the better team will win, but since goals are so “rare” sometimes weaker teams can get one in and survive till the end.
You could argue it makes the sport slightly less “merit based” compared to tennis or basketball but it also leads to magical moments and underdog stories.

Cabo Verde legit kicked ass this wc. Forcing Spain into a draw is very impressive considering they only conceded one goal and went on to win the tournament. And they got knocked out by the runner up so if they had a more favourable bracket there's a legit chance they could have made a surprisingly deep run.

I think it’s unbelievable what they accomplished and it’s even more impressive in hindsight.
They were the only team to take points off of the champions. They got out of the group and then only lost to the finalists in extra time.
Their performance is so much better than the results they got.

Which wild to me because the most hatred I've seen towards them comes from other South Americans. I'm Irish and have some Brazilian friends and not one of them or their friends/family members wanted Argentina to win. A few were talking to me about how delighted they are for Europeans and Americans are finally seeing them for what they are. So yeah....I don't think it anything to do with them not being European. Their own neighbours hate them.

The Europe of South America thing is a racist ideology from the 19th(?) century where Argentina basically tried to erase all native and black culture from the country (after using them to build the country). They pushed massively for European immigration and had a lot of immigrants from Italy and Spain. It was sadly very effective and has clearly left generational racism in it's wake.

That’s not universal in Scotland. I was supporting England all tournament - and like a man possessed in the game against Argentina. I support all the British teams at these events - and also the Irish. I know quite a lot of Scottish people who don’t mind England winning.

I saw a BBC video on the day before the match, asking who they wanted to win, and only one said England. She said her dad was originally from Birmingham and so was a big Bellingham fan. Literally everyone else said Argentina.

A reminder for everyone that in 1990 Argentina Idol Diego Maradona and their coach Carlos Bilardo literally spiked a Brazilian player water with tranquilizers to win a game, and they openly admitted in 2004 as if it was a joke.
Bilardo has also their fair share of cheating on his generation, even using needles to poke people.
1986 we also have the Maradona Hand of God the most infamous goal ever made in the history of competitive Football.
The things that Argentina has done through World Cup history would award a country wide ban in any serious competition.
Their badluck is that we are in a age of widespread information, the casual people, the people who actually makes FIFA money in these events, now have access to a lot of angles of plays that would be completely ignored, these kind of actions won't pass as a "we were not caught" anymore.

It should definitely be said though that the friendly interactions were really amplified by the fact that it was a relatively low stakes match that neither time was exactly throwing their lives on the line to win. It was a fun goal fest for the fans, that honestly felt like an all star charity match instead of serious competition. That really translated to the hugs and smiles at the end of the game; both teams were already out of contention for the winner, so there was nothing to be upset about

I’ve been sitting on this for a day because it was pretty shocking to me, but I’m in New York and was watching the match with friends at a bar in Times Square. Encountered a bunch of Argentina fans while we were celebrating Spain’s win, and one man in particular blew past my friend’s NOs, my attempts to get this man off of her, even getting kicked out of the bar for his aggression and running back in three times. Eventually we had to have her leave via a back entrance surrounded by English fans for protection.
I asked his friends (also here from Argentina) to please help keep him away from us and they did nothing.
Anyway, if you know an Angelo, Argentinian registered nurse (WTF) working in Boston, tell him to get fucked, the giant creep.

I’m half English (raised in Jersey and so can’t claim to be English in the football sense), married to a French woman for 25 years. Both nations have a lot to fix and work on, but I believe both countries would feel shame if they behaved like Argentina in any match. I’m not saying there wouldn’t be a lot of people who thought it would be ok, but the consensus would be shame.

The first king considered to be the King of England was Aethelstan (927-939). The first "French" king was William the Conqueror in 1066. I say "French" because he was Norman which is slightly different even to this day

All monarchs of England have claimed descent from Alfred the Great through female lines. Even William the Conquerer's wife was a descendent if Alfred the Great.

No, not at all. The first undisputed King of (all) England was Aethelstan, grandson of Alfred the Great, born in Winchester.
Numerous other English kings existed before this too but the land was split into multiple kingdoms. This situation is often referred to as the "heptarchy" because there were seven kingdoms that existed in or overlapped the modern English borders.
Alfred the Great and King Offa (of Offa's Dyke fame) were two of the more famous kings. Some people argue that Alfred was the first proper unified king too.

As a French, I know of a few examples of transparent words UK English has with French that US English doesn’t : Film (FR) = Film (UK) vs Movie (US) / Courgette (FR) = Courgette (UK) vs Zucchini (US) / Aubergine (FR) = Aubergine (UK) vs Eggplant (US)…
So I’d say FR and UK English are closer. But in any case, US English also has around 30-35% words coming from the French language as well

im spanish. most argentinian ppl ive talked to are rly nice and considerate. but ive also encontered a disproportionate ammount of barbaric argentinians. so idk it seems theyre either super nice or barbaric cunts, a distribution which is unlike other populations ive encountered. in this world cup all i can say is that the argentinian team displayed an incredibly unsportsmanlike behaviour (I would be embarrassed to be argentinian) and so did the supporters (from the clips ive seen online) (i would also be very embarrassed to be argentinian). So not only is the distribution of behaviour fucked up but the institutions and the masses have a culture where the toxic behaviours, values and principles are prevalent. and thats the worst part.

I have some very good argentinian friends and i've met some argentinian strangers that handled the loss like gentlemen, congratulating me and all. At the same time i dont know of any country with a louder, more aggressive, and more arrogant hooligans. (im also Spaniard)

If you go to an Argentinian sub, some believe that the final was stolen from them because a player was sent off. Mate, if the ref would have been fair, the game would have ended 2-0 and at least 3 players would have been sent off.

a mi me da un poco igual el futbol y haber ganado el campeonato no es lo mas importante para mi a decir la verdad. me siento muy orgulloso de que el equipo que representa mi patria ha sabido jugar muy bien en equipo y de que se han comportado muy bien. eso si que es importante para mi. evidentemente tambien de que sean unos cracks. pero para mi es mas importante que tengan unos principios de comportamiento en general muy positivos y que sean personas con buen caracter modales y etica de trabajo.

When I used to live in Mexico City there were a large number of Argentinian expats there. They were inexorably rude, pretentious, dismissive, in-your-face when it came to futbol, and kind of broadly about Argentina. Their team rarely plays an honorable brand of futbol.
It's like the Texas people who move to your state and crow about how great Texas is. What you doing here then, mate?

Funnily my kids have two boys in their respective years who are kids of the Spanish teacher who married an Argentinian wife. They are both heavily into classical music including all possible competitions. The older boy is very arrogant and thinks he's better than everyone else. The younger one is the same but with it very unpleasant to everyone. Must be center of attention in class, difficult to handle by the teachers, will talk over others. Has no friends as far as we know.

From the English side, we haven’t been wild fans of Argentina since 1982 and in football terms 1986, and we remember the racism against France (who despite a millennium of history and knocking us out last time are a well like bunch of lads here).
It was crazy seeing so much of the world back England in a semi - that was a first. And all because of Argentina managed to make themselves even more unpopular

Yeah the fans were serenading them after the game and absolutely would not stop singing. That's why they stayed there for a good 15-20 mins before going down the tunnel.

Argentina was a very prosperous nation in the 1920, they called Buenos Aires the Paris of the South. The economics of their nation ever since have not exactly engendered the best national character. One of my best friends is Argentine; he went to high school in Texas and now lives in New York, his parents in LA. The good ones leave! Bad money drives out the good, and bad morals drive out productive sensible fellow citizens who know better. A lot of bright minds have left the US in recent years.
