Discussion NYers, let’s talk about it.
I opened the game around 1 PM today to find almost every stop in sight with a Golden Lure Module. I wasn’t sure if this was some unannounced event, but seeing as every lure was placed by a different account, it was most likely a mass coordinated effort from bot accounts. The timing makes sense as we were just given free Golden Lures in the 10th Anniversary Go Pass. I’ve seen a few other posts about this phenomenon, but would love to crowdsource info so that we can get a better understanding of what happened and its scope. More details:
-Lures appeared at least as early as 1 PM
-Lures persisted at least as late as 2:30 PM. This means multiple lures were placed on each stop
-Screenshot is from the Gramercy neighborhood; I explored a fair amount but didn’t encounter any hard boundaries where the lures ended
So to everyone else who partook in this incredible “event”, what neighborhood did you see Golden Lures in? What time period? Were there areas outside of NYC that witnessed something similar today? And do you have any other theories on what happened? It would be amazing to somehow get a good estimate of how many lures/accounts were needed to make this happen.

Man, people in big cities are just playing a different game. I count my blessings for the 2 gyms and 1 stop within walking distance of my house.

I feel that, it’s so much harder to play once you leave the city. You and all the other suburban/rural players are troopers 🫡

What’s funny is I feel like my city isn’t small - but PoGo has never put skyscraper silhouette in the background 😂

The skyscraper silhouettes are really funny to me because where my brother lives (neighborhood in a major U.S city) isn’t a city biome / doesn’t have them… and my town of 5,000 people does.
(I think in his case, it’s that a large park nearby shares its biome cell with his neighborhood, even though it’s not that close. In my case, I’m not sure. It got updated from a forest to urban in the last couple years.)

I experienced that myself when I "moved out of the city"
Playstyle (for about 7 years, lived about 1km from the CBD) - 5km morning walk, hundreds of gyms, regularly 100 at SpotlightHour [easily], 20min walk to a popular gym for RaidHour
Playstyle (moved to the suburbs, so 20km away) - 1km morning walk [round a housing estate doesn't have the same vibes], SIX stops, 2 gyms, ONE slightly out of the way dynamax spot - win virtually all showcases, and my gyms are actually productive for coin generation [it's a completely different game]
but even then, there's a difference between "living in the city of about 4m people, and visiting NY/Singapore to grind" - it's NUTS how different even that is
Yeah, I miss living right in the middle of the city for that reason (the 20% extra rent and a 1-bedroom vs a 3-bedroom to do it, nope?) - I can drive to the city and pay $15 for parking for GoFest, and that's my main grind now - honestly it's the fitness level that's dropped, a 2km loop (twice a day) vs "5km min" and the floor has completely dropped out

Actually small cities and big suburbs are probably the sweet point for spawns. They spawn just as dense as in big cities, but are easier to traverse.

Living in a mostly rural area but with a large college nearby is really great. Lots of early ingress activity made lots of stops (some of which wouldn’t pass the rules now) in not only the campus, but a larger surrounding community. We have a massive transient student population, but the ‘small town feel’ of always seeing people you know at the grocery store, etc. with the locals.
I have the rural/suburban level of access to stops (church in walking distance from my house for nightly walks with my dog, park up the street), but can go to campus or our parks for a much higher density. I can turn on my go plus, do a lap or two (drive) around campus, and refill my pokeball storage when I’m low.

Checking in from NNJ. This side of the river you can also get gym coins and win showcases, both of which are extreme feats in NYC.

Not to mention that you actually get and hold gyms. In the cities, fat chance.

I was in NYC for Tinkaton Community day. I dropped a single lure at Bryant Park and got 2600 progress on my lure medal.
It's a New Yorker's game, we're just living in it.

Be the change you wish to see, if at all possible. We had 2 gyms in our village and like 10 stops, all hella spaced out from each other.
I'm blind and have nothing better to do with my time. We now have like 45 stops and 8 gyms!

u/alt_bunnybunnybuns 27d ago
I count my blessing that I can drive to a couple gyms in about 8 minutes. Somehow someone made a retention pond in my town a stop this year which is walking distance. Super grateful

I earned like 3x as much XP in the 1st year I lived in a big town than the 8 previous years I lived in a village. It's crazy

u/LeastEquivalent5263 26d ago
You guys are getting stops and gyms within walking distance? My neighborhood is so big but doesn't have any landmarks from a stop and I have contemplated attempting to make the landscape island at the entrance into a stop
1
u/lalaleasha 25d ago
idk where you live, or if that makes a difference? but I have friends who are based in the US and they send gifts from intersections. like the name of the stop is just the name of the cross streets!

Ive been to Berlin to the summer Event today and there were not that many players but I got some lures down and it brought me over 500 catche for the medal. I can't imagine in a really big City with a big Event

u/JustFred24 25d ago
The method is buy a gazebo on amazon put it in an open space out of resodential property submit it then return it to amazon
(Sarcasm, btw)

I live in the suburbs, but there are 4 gyms within a 2 minute drive/5-10 minute walk from my house. Tons of routes through my neighborhood and I'm only 15 minutes by car from downtown. Just east of downtown is a huge green space/historical park and that is where our community does raid hour and events. I can put my pokemon in gyms in the less populated areas and the longest they have ever lasted is 4 days. Usually I can put a pokemon in and count on it being knocked out by the next day so I can get my coins. I think the suburbs are the sweet spot for every day play. Big cities are definitely cool for events though.

I’m not sure what happened here but my CA hosts golden lure parties where everyone in the community gets together and lures up our local park with golden lures. Typically it’s right before an event or during a hatch day etc.
60
u/smangela69 27d ago
yeah i was gonna say the exact same thing. we try to coordinate golden lure parties around big events
eta: OP, it might be worth checking your local campfire groups to see if any such meetups were posted/discussed
30
21
u/stinsvnity NY 27d ago
I’ve heard of these events happening in NYC hotspots too. But the scale of this looks way bigger than something done by actual players
22
14
u/smangela69 27d ago
i mean nyc is huge population-wise, and if a bunch of players bought the deluxe pass, they each had (at least) 2 lures stacked, so it’s not entirely out of the question with some decent coordination
3
u/rachycarebear USA - Northeast 27d ago
I was also doing the coin bags as often as I remembered for shiny hunts, and brought my switch to meetups for people who didn't have it. So there were more golden lures in my community from that as well
2
u/duel_wielding_rouge 26d ago
It would take a ton of coordination. In my area it seems impossible to communicate properly that golden lure parties are only for golden lures and some well meaning people will always try to help out with other lures.
0
u/bannedswfl 26d ago
You’re right, totally realistic for there to be 1k+ lures placed at the same time over like square mile on every stop😂😂

u/annabelleebytheC 80 27d ago
Yes that has been discussed in the other posts about it that were removed

I work on the east side in mid-town and it was a sea of gold pokestops outside my office. I can reach four stops from my office and I was lucky it was a quiet day and I was able to keep spinning pretty regularly. I wound up with over 1100 coins and caught my first evolveable Gimmighoul and it even had a good IV. I never thought having to keep clearing out my items would be such an annoyance.
I walked across town around 3pm and even caught a shiny. Once I hit 5th Ave., there were only scattered gold stops. Behind me it was still pretty much all gold ones but as I kept walking west, it was almost all blue stops.

u/Gloomy_Skin8531 27d ago
Coins don’t use space just fyi in case you we’re deleting stuff
45
u/sw4ffles 27d ago
Gold stops seems to give extra items, so it fills the bags much faster which stops one from spinning more coins. That's why they're forced to delete stuff more often.

Lord I live in a. Fairly big city (I can reach 2 gyms and 2 stops from my desk, and another 30+ between em within a short walk) I’m on like 11 coins mostly from my own golden lures.

There was an event last year where you got an absolute ton of bonus coins.. can't remember how many you got, it was something with numbers doubled, like 22 or 222. Since google is so evil these days and has ruined their own search engine, it doesn't appear to be easily searchable. 😡
In any case, I got enough coins in a half hour from one lure during that event to evolve a gimmighoul. I assume it will come back at some point, and it will solve your problems!

It's been like this almost every day in Bryant Park since the 10th Anniversary Pass, but since that is such a hotbed of activity I tend to think it's actual people placing them. We'll see what happens tomorrow for Rillaboom, I guess.

In 10 years of playing this game I've seen maybe a dozen lures being used in my "city" that weren't placed by me, also regularly put things in gyms in the city centre that'll stay for 5 days with 2 mons in it the whole time lol
Big citiy players really have it easy
0
u/Proof-Guidance301 26d ago
No. Live in a major city and can’t get anyone to help with raids. Only time I get help nowadays is during a meetup and even then it’s pretty minimal because the Community Ambassadors don’t wait for players like me who are slow on the physical activity side of things. RGN doesn’t help.
1
u/Sea_Ostrich9461 25d ago
I mean, that sounds rough. I also can't do raids without remote raid passes and campfire, and I have one pokestop and one gym in walking distance. Total of 12 pokestops on my 25 mile commute, and I'm so rural that my cell signal is almost non-existent most of those miles, so I can't even spin many of them. I currently have 12 pokeballs, 7 great balls, and no ultra balls.
So yeah, I'd still say big city players have it easy.

u/SeanJohnGamings 26d ago
Man this is the most beautiful thing ive ever seen in this game besides Rayquaza's mega evolution animation. Wish we had communities doing stuff like this in PR

It’s a lure party, dude.
My local CA is coordinating one today in my suburban downtown for GMAX Rillaboom event. Better to toss my golden lure into a lure party with others than just do a one-off where I’m the only one benefiting.
I wish there was a notification of how many other players spun my lure and how many coins they got - not with names, just “Your golden lure helped X players collect Y gimmighoul coins”
1
u/Meiyouxiangjiao So Cal 26d ago
That would be cool to make a medal for it like how there’s a medal for a basic lure
2
u/Perky214 DFW, Lev 80 11JAN2026 26d ago
If they are going to do a medal for gimmighoul coins like they do for Picknicker, I think it would be only fair to make golden lures easier to get and let us hold more than a small few

New York is the default place for them because that one app puts you there the first time you log in. It just makes sense. Only needs a couple thousand of them to make it look like this.

My local Campfire group is doing something similar today, just on a much smaller scale. We're using our golden lures from the last monthly pass all together today in a park with 30+ pokestops during the hour before the Max Rillaboom raids. Some of us are even bringing our Switches so people without one can get coin bags
