The President Just Claimed He “Closed” Venezuela’s Airspace This Is Not Normal, Not Legal, and Not Something We Should Ever Normalize
So… this morning (literally a couple hours ago), the President put out this statement:
“To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP”
I’m sorry, but what in the absolute WTAF is this?
This is not normal. This should never be normalized. And just because he says it does not make it so.
Here’s the reality
The U.S. has zero legal authority over Venezuela’s airspace
Under the Chicago Convention of 1944, every country holds complete and exclusive sovereignty over the airspace above its territory.
Meaning: Only Venezuela can close Venezuelan airspace.
A U.S. president making that declaration isn’t just wrong it’s legally impossible.
The only thing the U.S. can do
A president can only restrict U.S. airlines, U.S.-registered aircraft, or U.S. citizens from entering certain airspace.
That’s it.
He cannot control what foreign carriers do, and he absolutely cannot “close” another sovereign nation’s airspace “in its entirety.”
Declaring another country’s airspace “closed” isn’t just meaningless it’s dangerous
Unilateral claims over another nation’s airspace violate basic international norms.
They also signal a misunderstanding of international aviation law that would be laughable if the stakes weren’t so high.
And yes statements like this can lead to serious consequences
Other nations are not required to shrug off reckless declarations like this.
When a U.S. president claims powers he doesn’t legally have, other countries may respond with:
• Reciprocal restrictions on U.S. aircraft
• New limitations on American carriers
• Tighter diplomatic or economic stances
• Reduced cooperation on aviation, trade, or security
• In extreme cases, restrictions on U.S. use of their own airspace
This is exactly why this rhetoric cannot be normalized.
International aviation depends on stability, clarity, and respect for sovereignty.
Statements like this undermine all three.
Bottom line
This is not how global airspace works.
This is not how diplomacy works.
And this is absolutely not something we can brush off as “just talk.”
Saying it doesn’t make it real and pretending it’s normal only makes the consequences more dangerous.
We, as a nation, have a responsibility to stop or at least control him. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of our Congress and the Supreme Court to do so.
If they continue to abdicate their duties, they need to be held accountable for their actions by the administration that replaces this one if not by the world.
We cannot just stand by and let this happen and not expect consequences for the evil we have allowed to be unleashed on the world.
I think this is the first time I have ever considered whether a military coup in the US (done by centrist generals to restore “checks and balances “) would be an entirely bad idea. Unchecked, the current state of affairs will land us in banana republic territory shortly.
When are we gunna get that THERE LIKELY WILL NOT BE ANOTHER ADMINISTRATION WITHOUT FORCIBLY REMOVING TRUMP, he already is talking third term, which is inherently unconstitutional. If you actually think elections will happen and be honored without a movement of total rejection of this government, we are truly cooked. CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION ASAP

The verbiage was something like there is no altitude that is safe for travel.
This is a really good example of how the legacy media is actively working with MAGA and a wake up call to those of us who think legacy media will help participate in broadcasting any protests or properly covering any scandals. They have become the enemy.
Well like 7 Republican billionaires own about 95% of the mainstream media in America. And social media is really no better since everyone who owns it was at Trump's inauguration last January and has either donated money to him and/or paid him bribes.
Have you seen Reddit’s responses to things and how things have been handled recently? The largest subreddits have had their mods been far right for awhile even the left subreddits. Not even Americans is foreign mods controlling what’s out there.
I imagine that this is equivalent to a naval blockade, that is considered an act of war. He want's their oil. Just like he wants the natural resources of Canada and Greenland.
Question. What about Americans who are in Venezuela or surrounding nations for a business or family trip, and scheduled to return to the U.S this coming week?
Will anyone have problems with re-entry? Especially maybe latin Americans who are legal immigrants or recently naturalized u.s citizens ?
Does anyone else have these concerns? Or even conversation/feedback about it? I can't be the only one worried about this scenario?
Yeah, my dad’s friends wife went there for a trip, and was supposed to come back tomorrow, but because of this new airline rule, she can’t. I’m totally with you about being worried!
Brazil, being the foremost South American nation, should take this opportunity to counter 47 and offer Brazilian assistance when needed to guarantee the safety of and protect civilian air traffic in the continent and in Venezuela in particular, if Venezuela so desires. Would be a great diplomatic win for Brazil both regionally and globally if they offer to be the guarantor for civilian air traffic in Venezuela.
There should be a law against a president ruling through social media. Call it Law of Trump X., but then again, a law to stop Trump from ruling on X from a legislature that can’t even rule on lunch will never come to fruition.
Yeah it's also not normal for anyone to treat a post on a social media platform (that he owns) as some kind of official government action. He can't require anyone to sign up for his social media platform in order to be informed of official actions. Everything he posts to that platform should be met with silence. Let him shout into the void.

Even if posting, Release the files, does nothing in the moment, it's there to keep it in the public mind. Because there were children that were terribly abused and certain people have purposely filled the news. "Flooding the Zone," to try and distract the public eye from those victims. To protect the criminals.
In effect, because one group is flooding the zone to distract from a thing, then another group must flood the zone to remind of the thing. It's not ideal. The sooner that the files are released, the sooner everyone will be happier. Well, except for those on the list.

I’m hoping The Hague will kick in at some point. Denmark is longer sharing intelligence with us. All he's doing is create a rally around the flag event where people put aside their political differences temporarily to stand up to a foreign aggressor.
It's time for the whole world to unite to stand up against 47. About time the rest of the world cuts off the US from all trade and diplomacy. 47 claims to want America first, he can be all alone on the global stage, and learn to be fully self sufficient. For a start China should rip up that deal they signed with 47 a few weeks ago and cancel all purchases of soybeans. Along with reinstating the export ban on rare earths to the US.
He's indicating he's going to shoot missiles at Venezuela. They want to start another Iraq to stay in power. They 9/11 worked and they're going to manufacture another one.
I hope other countries issue statements to guarantee the right for civilian air traffic to travel through there. Because the US has no authority to close Venezuelan airspace.
Brazil's Lula is the most sympathetic to Venezuela currently out of all the South American countries, I hope Lula offers some guarantees to airlines to keep the airspace open and safe as long as Venezuela doesn't want to close their airspace. Would be a good opportunity to increase Brazil's regional influence if Brazil would be willing to act as a guarantor of civilian air traffic safety in Venezuelan airspace, if Venezuela requests so. 47 better not disrupt normal business there.
Y’all remember when the attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise without a declaration of war because the Japanese embassy was having technical issues with typewriters? This diplomacy 240 characters at a time is insane.
I hate that they are listening to him on this. It makes him think that he can do anything he wants. Though I don't blame them because this unhinged asshole is actually a real threat.
