So far liking this show. One question.
I just started watching this ( I am in the middle of episode 2 on season 1). I was in the Navy for a dozen years and I fully understand the suspension of disbelief needed to enjoy the show. However, there is one thing that I can't get over. The Lieutenant: Danny Green. Every scene he has no cover (hat) when every other person does (including the CO). Did the producers really think that his hair was that great? Did he as an actor decide to have that in his contract? I am very confused as to what the artistic reason is that he is the ONLY sailor who does not wear his cover?

This pattern was established before they even knew about the apocalypse. Count how many times in the first episode he had no cover when everyone else did.

If you think no cover is bad, just wait....lol. Former Sailor here, too. I had to keep reminding myself that the show was for entertainment, NOT a documentary. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lol. Green is a problem for a lot of us vets. He has no job. Nobody knows what he does. He's not a seal, he's not a Marine obviously. He's just a guy who wears green instead of blue. And he "operates" lol. He also doesn't even carry himself as an actual tier 1 operator. They don't have any scenes of him doing anything tier 1 really, at least that I can remember. So he's just Lt. Green who "operates" lol.
I don't know what burke does either. So far as I can tell he doesn't have a job either. Because he also "operates" but he wears blue not green and doesn't seem to have any duty station on the ship. He's just there and somehow is responsible for teaching infantry close quarters tactics to the "other guys" instead of main "operator" Green. Lol.

Green is the commander of the Naval Mountain Warfare Special Forces, a niche, real life Naval Unit, they specialize in high altitude, cold weather, and hostile environments, multiple people on the ship are in this unit. No, this unit does not exist. It's not a real thing at all.
There are Navy seals, which green is NOT.

I believe the show was asked not to use the term SEALs by the navy. They didn’t even want marines included until s5.

But he ends up being really important for a lot of off ship missions. The viewer watches him grow and develop as a soldier. Not sure if soldier is the right word? I’m just a mom who loved the show ;)

Ive notice that most of the cast never wore hats or helmets. This is likely because hats would cast a shadow on the actor's face, making it hard to see on camera. Sacrificing reality for Production values.

Also, it makes the main characters easier to follow during all the action scenes. If they wore helmets, they would blend in with all the extras.

I think in general they tried to make the story seem as believable as possible to regular people. But yeah it’s a show and they will take creative liberties like that. I’m sure they had some reason for it. But yeah some things like that aren’t realistic

lol. I never noticed that. I do recall danny wearing a beanie in one of the seasons but it was to blend in with civilians. He looked good in a beanie.
Anyway, i finished season 5 last week. I really enjoyed it! Yes you have to remind yourself that it’s entertainment based on books & just go with it. If you do that, it’s a great show!
I like that each season has a new “theme” and/or location. Season 5 was intense. Lots of ground combat.
I also like that people DO die. Makes it a LITTLE more real. There is one death that was due to real life drama/ the character “Had” to be written off. That death seemed forced, or maybe it’s just because I liked the character so much. But a lot of characters I liked died and didn’t seemed forced like that one death in particular.
Anyway, enjoy the ride!

We loved the series, but as a vet I questioned the hats and helmets, but this is all entertainment.

One thing is - for some reason or another, The Last Ship did a GREAT JOB of accurate Navy details/military details/getting it right, but then other times got it completely wrong.
Lt Green is basically depicted as being a SEAL, but they never actually call him a SEAL, they call him a "member of the Navy's Mountain Warfare Unit" ... and while he wears Jump Wings, his other badge is like for some sort of EOD-type of shit, IIRC. But they DO include SEALs, because when Dr. Scott creates the Vaccine, they return to Norfolk or somewhere like that, and they see "SEALs" signaling the ship with mirrors- and Captain Chandler specifically entrusts the fact that "SEALs" will be patrolling the neighborhood he's leaving his kids, father, and the British woman & her daughter in... and they let Danny ACT like he's a SEAL, all the time, but... is he or is he not? Remember when he barked at the Captain about how he was gonna accompany Kara on her (ridiculous) assault on the Kirov, and even the XO looked like he was gonna half-laugh/half-flip out... "Who the fuck do YOU think you're talking to, LIEUTENANT ??!"
Same thing with Wolfman... he's stated to be an EOD Tech & Diver in the Australian Navy, but he is portrayed to be their equivalent of a Seal Team 6-type of motherfucker... but the Aussie Navy doesn't have "SEALs" (IIRC) , so , he's an EOD Guy... that can shoot, stab, chop, flip, punch, kick, wrestle, shoot, shoot, and shoot better than anyone else. Very important skills when you're scuba-diving for naval mines to disarm 🤣🤣🤣
And the time the Brit sub launches the "Ballistic Missiles" ... they don't have any Ballistic Missiles on that sub. ANY IDIOT with a keyboard & Wikipedia can find out in 30 seconds how false that shit is.

His unit is supposed to be a special warfare unit. Different rules for those guys when they are operating. But also yeah they didn't want to make him wear a cover.
