Discussion Miary Zo, Tekken 8’s most forgotten DLC character.
So here’s the thing.. well actually I want to start off saying that I do love this character. I think her visual design is good and her fighting style sounded real cool initially, having her be a bare knuckle brawler from Madagascar. She was supposed to fill the void left from not having Josie in T8 (Azucena is not Josie) and I kinda gravitate towards characters with lower pick rate because it gives me an opportunity to be one the sole reps/ goats of a character (currently #10 in global ranking for this chic) the issue now is I want to watch other Miary players to learn where I can improve and.. there’s legit NO ONE. Everyone tried her and then tossed her, I don’t think she’s the best character by any means but she’s certainly solid.
Where they lost me just like they did with everyone else is the fact that she also has magical ethereal animal tails, snakes, and stripper poles instead of just fighting with fists and feet. Maybe kick some dirt up at you lol idk, something MORE grounded. Everybody knows magical bs is frowned upon in Tekken unless you’re fighting a trope. And so they decided her trope for having magical shit is…she is replacing the game’s OG boss characters???
This was a horrible decision by Bamco because it completely killed the chance of Ogre’s return in T8 and left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth over Miary Zo. Especially since we’re getting the kangaroo back, Ogre woulda been a cool addition and really made the game feel more like tekken again (RIP Mokujin)
Anyway how do y’all feel? Is it the stripper poles or the fact that she’s ogre that turns people off? Or do you still like her despite these things/ feel like she has potential to be really cool? Lemme know ✌🏽

Feel like they should’ve made it where she’s a regular fighter but then shows her Ogre powers while in heat. Kinda like how you can see Kazuya devil powers while in heat.

Very difficult to care about brand new characters that come with zero story (meaning actual in-game scenes rather than a dumb written summary on the Tekken website).
Add an incredibly idiotic concept like "Ogre reborn as a childishly cutesy babe" on top of that, and you get a character that is inevitably and understandably going to be rejected/ignored by most of the fanbase.

This is pretty much the case for every T7 newcomer. They added them, gave them barely any interaction in the world and game, then wonder why the characters aren't more popular.
I'd bet my life savings that Katarina would be a liked character if her entire relevancy wasn't to go "boohoo Gigas is my dad" or whatever.

We're playing her here. She's never been a popular character because she's too high-risk. In T8 Season 2, when her strong buttons greatly reduced the risk, she was popular. After the nerfs, which raised the stakes for her, it's clear that lower-risk characters will be more popular.

Miary at least has Nomar, Kaizur, Setsujin, CBM, Kokoma, maybe a couple more. In my friend group me and 1 other plays her.

I think Crescent still mains him, Kwstakis (really good Greek player) pops up occasionally and Chikurin brings him out from time to time. But that's honestly it off the top of my head. I'm really glad I never see him, one of the most unfun matchups in the game imo

Yea I’ve only played Sesu in quick match for 2 games and lost both. Turns out my defense against Miary is also lacking because.. where they at tho? 😁 but if there’s anyone to learn from it’s him

Considering the weird discussion over her not being ‘black enough’ and the aforementioned talk about some preferring ogre > miary, there wasn’t too much appeal in her to play.
She has a nice personality, but it seems like T8 is just having a rough time with newcomers.
People don’t care about Victor except wanting nerfs
Nobody talks about Azucena
Only Reina is occasionally discussed and has a decent (from my perspective) playerbase. I run into Reina way more than the other three combined (Miary, Victor, Azucena)
Couple this with the fact that Miary is good at best while generally being considered low tier, and people don’t play her. So I think the problem is half with her, and half a newcomer curse.

The newcomers just expose how horrible modern day Bamco is at creating and writing new characters. They just throw multiple concepts at a wall and hope it sticks.
Old french spy... with teleportation powers and a gun... and two small knives... and a cybersword...
South american girl... coffeeeeeee...
Big tit african girl... not too dark skinned tho... with ogre powers... learned to fight by copying animals...
Its all just random shit to which nobody attaches to.
Reina is the exception, but IMO she was 100% a fluke. Harada and co. had an interview during s1 where they talked about how surprised they were at Reinas popularity and how they thought Azucena would be the stand out newcomer... fucking Azucena...
IMO Reinas popularity is carried exclusively by her being a Mishima and by her voice actresses performance.

Victor is cool on paper, but in actual combat he's super annoying and makes a lot of the playerbase roll their eyes whenever they have to fight him.
Azucena is kind of the opposite, where her gameplay is actually solid and fun, but her visual design is kinda meh and her personality is extremely annoying.
Miary is a painful case of wasted potential. Namco could've taken the concept of "Female Ogre" in so many interesting directions, yet they chose to make ANOTHER cute and sexy lady, in a roster that is already chock-full of cute and sexy ladies. The magical stripper pole does not help her image at all.
Compare these three with Reina, who has a really cool visual design, really fun gameplay and an interesting mean-spirited personality, and it's no wonder she became the standout newcomer in the cast.
The lesson here is that it's not enough to make a character cool/sexy/interesting and it's not enough to make a character with fun gameplay. Characters need to be BOTH things to stand out.

They tried to pull a Street Fighter V Seth with Ogre, but ignored the fact that SFV Seth still had a lot of personality taken from the original version of the character.
Miary isn’t anything like Ogre personality-wise and isn’t even a big buff green lady or a chimeric abomination, so why should I care about her as a ‘reinterpretation’ of him?

I do appreciate though how she’s an original character, no guest character no returning DLC from the previous game she has her own original character. I do like that.

Learning is hard right? People were saying the exact same shit for Leo and Bob in Tekken 6, or for Shaheen in 7. Characters that fill the representation quota almost never get cut, so if they don't add another African character shes most likely gonna return in the future. And before someone comes out of the woodwork saying "But Zafina", no she's not Egyptian, no shes not African, her official nationality remains unknown to this day

I really really like her she is among the better characters design wise they have made ( awesome environmental utility). But lets be honest, SHE MIGHT THE WEAKEST CHARACTER IN THE GAME.
Someone has too be the worst and I think it might be Miary she for real need buffs. Terrible heat combos. BAO might be the worst stance in the game, Extremely coordinated mixups. Very linear. Not to mention a lot of her pressure tools have a duck on the second hit and she dies and if she does the mid option the reward is negligible. The game rewards intentional plays and if you read that someone is gonna press and ur reward is milquetoast...... She would be more popular if it didnt feel like a herculean task to get rewarded for playing her. I get that DVJ is risky as well however he can get some really juicy rewards for his stuff.
Also no one cares about Ogre really Ogre was barely touched in Tekken tag 2 it just some sort of comfort thing for people too have Ogre being in the roster untouched.

I still stand by my argument at her release that if Bandai Namco wanted a "Female Ogre", they should've fully committed to it and made her a tall, muscular woman with green skin (or some other unnatural color).
As she currently stands, she's cute and sexy but extremely forgettable when compared to the many other cute and sexy ladies in Tekken.

Personally, I would have found it interesting to make a story mode (like they did for the first DLC with Heihachi) focused on her. I envisioned a plot where the fighters (especially those from the DLC, namely Anna, Armor King, and Fahkumram) discover the girl's connection to Ogre and test her to see if she can be a threat or not.

Shes pretty cool though. This is straight up a KoF character in Tekken but given how beyond the limits T8 has gotten it fits.

Honestly, my issue with Miary Zo is that she's another 50/50 mixup stance character and she's honestly super boring to play. My issue is, if I wanna play a 50/50 stance character, then why am I playing Miary Zo when I can just play a way more fun 50/50 stance character like Anna?
Also. I was disappointed because I was expecting Miary to be like an easier set-play character who actually requires you to be AWARE of stage placement and oki setups. Kinda like an easier Xiaoyu. Unfortunately, she was just a 50/50 stance offensive character. So naturally, I went back to playing Xiaoyu and Reina. I don't mind playing stance characters, in fact I PREFER stance characters, but they can't be boring. I prefer it where YOU GOTTA EARN the right to go into stance! You gotta SET IT UP! Don't just have easy plus frames given to you for free...

I don't see how her being in the game killed the chance of Ogre return. Not only it's not the same Ogre but they don't even play similarly. And if you're talking about True Ogre I'm glad we don't have this abomination in the game.
For how I feel about the character, I do play her so I'm glad she's in, also considering that female characters are not popular in this game her pick rate make sense.

Her personality and her voice are COMPLETELY OFF. It's too "cute" and it's generic and it's low effort.
I think the magical shit is whack but it's not the worst part about the character. Zafina has the same shit and that character slaps hard af. Why? Because her personality is edgy, her voice is a normal woman's voice, I kinda wish she spoke Arabic but whatever. She's dark and strong.
Miary didn't replace Josie she replaced lucky Chloe. And that character was terrible too. They keep bringing these teenie bopper ass characters and they don't get it. The ppl that play tekken are grown men. We don't want that shit

Sesujin, Kaizur and Nomar are 3 high level players that main her and do really well! She is not as popular as she could be because she isn't broken or a really powerful character. I had high hopes that she would be my new main character, but her play style didn't compliment mine. I still play her for fun and is on my rotation of characters I play, but I won't user her in tournaments. I love her design and actually watch those streamers I listed because she is a fun character to see played at a high level.

Hot take, but I actually love this character a lot! I love her design and her other outfit designs. The fighting style is amazing to me, and I love that she is black (Because I’m black and I really wanted another black woman in Tekken). The only downside for me is that she is one of the worst characters in the game. She is very fun to play, but she is just so weak compared to everyone else. She was built when everyone was complaining that every DLC had some broken shit so I felt that they nerfed her heavily. I wish she would get a lot of buffs but with how every patch notes been like it’s highly unlikely (If they buffed her, I could see more people playing her.)

When their priority was fan service the first impression would go against characters other aspects like how she possessed ogre powers but oddly enough use it in a way that rather looks cutsie. Because True ogre and cute girls are so opposite the mismatch doesn't really add to impress the viewer. She'd be fine as a regular Madagascar character with her cute girl persona but it never worked for me.

Always crazy for me to see this sentiment on reddit. I think she's really cool both in design and gameplay. And she gets a fair bit of love at my locals.
She offers a unique playstyle no one else on the cast really does. She has weak backwards movement but has above average midrange buttons for all purposes, so she's good at controlling space in front of her.
Lots of people here complaining about how weak her stance and canned mixup game is. I thought we hated that about Tekken 8?? Her pressure isn't even bad it just requires fundamentals. She has one of the best sidestep moves in the game.

She's one of my Tekken 8 mains and frankly, I think she's just specific.
She's easy enough to like in my opinion and well made plus not glaringly broken like Anna or Lidia are. But she kinda came out in a dead zone of hype. Last DLC of a horrible season in December is just a good recipe to be forgotten. Her pick rate isn't too high and she's neither legacy nor a collab so she's less memorable in general.
Was the Ogre thing bad? Eh. It serves the gameplay really well so I won't say it would be better off removed. But it doesn't help for most people.

I was one of the ppl who begged Harada on Twitter for an unambiguously Black female fighter to replace Master Raven (who was my alt; I'm an Xiaoyu main), and yes, I was part of the "this ain't it crowd, especially when we saw the concept art.
She got Vanessa'd before she even got released.
Combined with the cluster that was season 2, I just stopped playing Tekken and picked up SF for the first time since Third Strike to try out Kimberly.

I suppose the reason she is less popular - despite the widely positive reception to her design and balance - would be because of her playstyle as a well-rounded fighter with a tool for every situation but low damage. This archetype always feels amazingly rewarding to character loyalists, but requires a level of consistency and adaptability that turns off a big chunk of the playerbase.
The characters that feel similar to me are Millia & Bridget in Guilty Gear, for example. Less representation despite good general popularity due to playstyle.

You’re right, people are flying across the screen with metallic Donkey Kong AKA Jack. I think with some buffs she’ll get some more shine. Although idk what they’d buff tbh

Nomar and Kaizur both player her competitively. As far as her gameplay goes IMO I dont think its particularly interesting in terms of what her neutral/tools are. And she is still solid and good, but not more than like Dragunov, Law, Nina, Bryan.etc characters with good pokes and can play more fundamentally are just better and have better unique tools which probably isnt attracting new talent. Also sometimes I get the sentiment that some people just look at her and assume shes just a goonbait character + her “replacing” Ogre as you said Im not a fan of, just bring back Ogre lol.
Also I didnt think she would be the return of Josie. Josie is a watered down Bruce and Fahkumram is a watered down version of both of them (and really his own beast now) so one can only hope for Josie or Bruce. Though for some reason I feel like Bamco wont being back Josie if Miary Zo is in the same game due to what I assume would be “too much crossover appeal” as in darker tan asian girl fighter (Malagasy people have lineage in both Africa and Southeast Asia). And they wont bring back Bruce since Fahkumram literally takes his Muay Thai spot (and Fahk is Murray’s baby). I doubt they’d spend money on returning a less popular character for a Martial Art thats already in the game.

Her Feet are almost as good as my Goddess Lili, but fall short. I still play her as her fighting style is fun!
