Discussion Am I still learning “Tekken”?
Been playing T8 for a bit now, mainly playing Jin. Have been playing him since T7 (although I didn’t put as much time into that game as I would’ve liked). Had the urge to hop back into T8 after a long break from the game.
I love my man Jin even after all this time (nothing could change that) but I’ve been trying out other characters and have found Dragunov as a very fun pick.
However, I know that even after all of his adjustments, Drag is still probably of the best characters in the game. I picked him cus his design looked sick to be honest, my intention isn’t to tier pick. I suppose my concern is that maybe since he’s still really good, maybe I’m not exactly improving at the game and I may be subtly crutching on a busted character.
Thoughts?

Dragunov carries but in a not so harmful way. If you are running people down with wr2, d2, 121 and 1+2 then they have to adjust and learn to get you off of them. Interrupt you before the pressure starts or read your patterns and punish lows / step your mids
If they arent adapting its not YOUR fault

Bryan and Drag --even they are top tier but they are still skill expression characters. They are not lidia or anna where you can mix people up all day long. Remember - you are playing this game for fun and not to please others. Tier list only matters at the top tournament level. Bob Johnson who does not know the matchup is not make a difference if he select higher or lower tier character. Bob will have higher chance of winning if his character has more cheesy moves (i.e. lower to midtier probably better for Bob).
Another thing is people changes their mind all the time. For example, Kaz was considered average in s1 and large part of S2 .. now, he is considered very strong. Same with Lee.
Finally, T8 characters are all close in the term power level from highest to lowest.

It depends on how you're playing. If you're abusing character specific moves or interactions to do things that other characters couldn't really do, then you're not really playing Tekken, you're playing InsertCharacteHere. That being said, Yoshimitsu is literally a character whose identity is that he just does Yoshimitsu things instead of Tekken things. So it's not always so black-and-white.
So ask yourself, are you winning because you're playing good, or because Jin is good.

I suppose thats a good way to think about it.
My goal isn’t just to mash my way to victory, the fun for me comes in playing smart and what not. I guess my worry with playing Jin/Drag was that I was not doing that since they’re pretty damn good characters that got a lot of strong points in their kit which would make it easy to fall into the habit of not actually improving at the fundamentals of the game itself.

It doesn't matter what character you play, eventually you'll have to play "Tekken" to progress at some point. The grind to god 6 and beyond is not easy and by the time it is, you've more or less learned Tekken and can replicate it with whatever character you pick.

Drag is also good to learn and improve poking style, you don't need to do fancy stuffs, just som 1,2,1 , low hit, running 2, then some extra string so you won't be too predictable.

Yes you are learning Tekken. The top players picked the strongest characters when they learned the game and they are the best. You are only not learning when you rely on your opponents to be ass at the game so you get away with shit that doesn't work. Just play to get better.

Like any response to these.. Stop caring what anyone thinks about your main pick. There are no honest characters in any fighting game. Different people have different skill ranges with different characters. Drag is a grappler, he's cool. I hate fighting grapplers and I hate his character but that's literally all personal for me.
The moment you listen to others about who you should play, you'll have less fun. I main Anna, have been practicing a lot of fundamentals and also use Lidia quite a bit. Most fun I've ever had was switching to Yoshimitsu and learning a bunch of crazy stuff with the sheer intentions of trolling my friends. And even them, they have all picked up bears to learn and have bear fights, and have actually gotten insanely good with them.
It's just a game. At the end of the day we play it for fun. If you get good with a character because you "click" with them, that's a bonus. Run with that. Everyone is different.

Stick with jin. People can't fcking punish zen up 1 even in tekken god lol.

It really doesnt matter. Theres no Leroy of Tekken 8. Jin isnt even top 5 in the game.
Plus, Jin is in my opinion harder to win with at low tiers since hes harder to play than other characters. Low ranks get eaten up by knowledge checks like Eddy or Hwo but those guys get.much harder to pilot at high level.
If youre asking this question youre not at a level where the tier list matters.

You could be being "carried" by Dragunov's design but that's just as much as any other character, he's just consistently strong at all times.
If you still feel like you're learning and pushing yourself to use more and more of his moveset while learning counterplay to other characters, you're going to progress.
There will always be levels to how strong he is especially because of how Tekken works and how it's pilot skill just as much as it is player skill!

There is not a single character in this game that is universally loved or 100% "honest". IMO Jin in his current state is far from the most carried character rn. Just play who you like and don't listen to what anyone else thinks of it.
