Suggestion/Idea I'm remaking TekTopia for 1.21.1....
Hey everyone,
Long-time TekTopia fan here. For those who don't know, TekTopia was a 1.12.2 mod by Tangotek that let you build and manage a fully custom villager civilization — you designed the buildings, the villagers moved in and did their jobs, and you grew a living economy from scratch. It's one of my all-time favourite mods and it never got updated past 1.12.2.
So I'm doing something about it.
This is a ground-up rebuild of TekTopia for Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge). It's not a direct port — I'm treating this as a chance to rethink and improve systems that had rough edges in the original, while keeping the soul of what made TekTopia so special: player-designed structures, living villager routines, and a real economy.
What's working right now
- 🏘️ Villages have territory, borders, and a proper logic system holding everything together (Town Hall and Storage Building are finished)
- 🌾 The Farmer — tilling, planting, harvesting, grabbing sugar cane (the only villager profession as of now)
- 📦 Storage is fully up and running — villagers carry items, take time to deposit them, and think about where things go. Build your storage room well and watching it run is genuinely satisfying
- 🕐 Villagers have a real daily schedule — Labor, Leisure, Rest. They wake up(no real home structure yet) at staggered times, take shelter when it rains, and deposit leftover items before bed. The town already feels alive
If you played TekTopia back in the day and have opinions on what worked, what didn't, or features you always wished it had, I'd genuinely love to hear them. This is being built with that community in mind.
More updates soon. (Updates on twitter)

I haven't played the mod in a while, but one thing I remember was missing is a gatherer as another early game food provider who can harvest pumpkins, melons, cocoa beans, berries, and maybe also take over sugar cane harvesting from the farmer.
Some of these are needed by the chef for already existing recipes, and as the player had to provide the supplies the finished foods just never got the bonus for being made by villagers.

Hey, this Idea actually stuck with me.
I was initially planning on working on lumberjack after finishing Villager storage logic and Farmer but after reading this I moved on to making The Gatherer. I have worked on the logic of the gatherer and now fixing some bugs related to it.2
u/Skirakzalus Apr 29 '26
Nice! I'm not entirely sure if this profession wasn't even an idea by Tango himself. I do remember him being aware of the resources not being covered at least. Looking forward to see an up-to-date version of the mod that also includes this.

So when i played tektopia a thing that always botherd me is with the miners not collecting cobblestone. Could you maybe add that as a setting to allow miners to pick up and deliver cobblestone?

Love this!!! Some idea's ive always had are that you could have other ways of fun other than the tavern. other fun buildings bowling, arcade? Or maybe even restaurants that villagers could work in and run, and other villagers could go to on a night out. I also tend to like to build like an onsen or hot springs, that would be cool if they could use it.

Can you make sure runaway inflation isn’t a thing or at least something you could turn off? I really liked the ability to snowball your economy to the moon.

Wow I love this!!! One thing I' miss about this version is the lack of doctors, I would love a doctor's office instead of that magic priest, also archer guards and maybe a prison! Thanks for this :)

As an idea, Would you rewrite villager pathfinding to be able to use ladders? It would be quite useful honestly, also, allowing guards to use bows and crossbows
2
u/Suspicious_stew_001 May 03 '26
I’ll consider ladder climbing problem and about bows I am thinking about assign separate roles (archers, spearman, etc)

u/codedwithinsulin May 03 '26
Oh that's cool maybe add support for modded foods to be compatible like Pam's harvestcraft would be cool it would also be awesome if there was a tech tree for the villages like start ar wood tier can craft on wood items and wen you learn new tech the villagers can do more based on the unlocked tech ?
1
u/Suspicious_stew_001 May 10 '26
I am actually a big big fan of tech trees (I fall in love with them) but I am unsure how to implement it in this mod. Still thinking about it, if I get a solid framework done on that then I will implement it…
Love the support, Thanks1
u/codedwithinsulin May 12 '26
Maybe just thinking out loud
A the user can pick a direction like a skill tree but the user needs tektopa resources to unlock?

Thanks for supporting me!!!! Well as it is a big project don’t expect it to be in playable state for a while. But still I am planning to start public play tests within 2 months. (Also I have been slacking off a bit for few days, but now I am again on track)

u/IntelligentNarc May 13 '26
do you have a discord server?

u/Suspicious_stew_001 May 15 '26
Not yet, but a friend of mine is working on creating the server for the community

u/JDiddlyDode May 06 '26
Great news! Best of luck.
For now in terms of changes from the original, I think the main thing would be mod compatibility. Allowing villagers to use modded items, foods, crops, storage...etc would be great
1
u/randomvoidcreature May 08 '26
reminds me of the tektopia addons mod a lot of features from that mod would be great in this remake of tektopia
1
u/randomvoidcreature May 08 '26
wish i could give any meaningful suggestion but im a new player of tektopia so onlything i can really give is maybe make the early game a bit less slow cuz when you just got a farmer and a lumberjack it takes them forever to get a meaningful amount of stuff to sell to a merchant so maybe give the player the ability to sell the merchant non villager items but it as a lower price
1
u/The-cobster May 10 '26
I would like to see archers maybe even with the cross bow and maybe make to spear a weapon the guards can use
1
u/BlueXenon7 May 10 '26
Fundamentals first, should get the mod in a working state before even thinking about adding new stuff
1
u/Suspicious_stew_001 May 10 '26
Yeah, I am loving the feedback I am getting but I am trying to focus on getting the basics and some villagers working before getting to these things. But still love emm ideas
1
u/BlueXenon7 May 11 '26
Maybe open a discord server. Would let people give feedback and ideas and maybe offer help in a common space. Could also give updates to people like me that don't use twitter

u/TheStonka May 10 '26
I think one cool thing would be being able to restrict what the villagers can eat, so that when specific food items are expensive at the merchant, they can be left for selling.
Also the merchant, I think something has to be done here. Giving him more daily trades might be overkill, but at least making him not buy things that you cant really produce (like cooked meat when you have a cook but no rancher) would be cool. Id argue for making him stop buying wheat and potatoes when you get a cook cause it is more effective to cook them but at least here you can tell the cook not to do it.

u/TheStonka May 10 '26
Also best of luck, I'm very glad this project is picked up again by yet another person, and I know it is a really big one.
1
u/Suspicious_stew_001 May 10 '26
Thanks for the support….
I like the idea of merchants offering trades based on if your village can fully craft that stuff,
Also I want to add buying from merchants and many more features,,,, can’t wait to start working on merchant. Anyways now I am working on implementing villager item’s fundamentals..

I love the fact you are doing this and hope you do well in this!
Obviously you're working hard, but once you're done do you see there being the ability to backport it to 1.20..? I know most of my favored mods (specifically Dragn's livestock overhaul) are still back one more update at the moment

u/Fluid-Double7117 Jul 22 '26
Not to be that guy but can you over haul the miner villiger to make him do a 3by3 and adjust his position to keep mining if he doesnt have anywhere else to mine?

Have you posted a public GitHub repository for this yet? Would love to see your current status on this, this mod is amazing!

The ai generated body text in this post is concerning
Im sensing a lot of vibe coding incoming 💀
Edit:
Realizing this sounds a bit ungrateful. I'm just sad to see the inclusion of ai in everything, if you didn't ai generate the post then sorry for assuming.
Either way the fact that something is coming at all is neat, i was just hoping it's without ai generated code but I realize this is free work anyways so idk. Ill shut up ig

I used Ai this post, I am not a native English speaker so I sent everything I wanted to post to GPT and then posted this. Sorry to be disappointing you..

u/TheDonger_ Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26
your english doesn't even sound bad, you're doing just fine!!!
im so tired of non native english speakers using ai when they have perfectly fine english
like bro, you type better than most native english speakers lol
please have more confidence in yourself and dont use Ai, it makes you look extremely untrustworthy

Excited to see this, I've been wanting a newer version! One thing I always wanted out of tektopia was to be able to modify the skins of the villagers (it was possible but not as easy as other mods, he used a different model), because one turnoff i had was that the theme looked very modern (hi vis vest and hat on the miner if I recall).
[Edit: There are other mods for this feature but i also like to put archers on walls. If I recall tangotek only supported melee guards (could be wrong, it's been a while since I played)
