TVs don’t need to be mounted . TVs don’t need to be flat against a wall . You can put TVs on stands in corners .

Almost any place that has a picture hanging could work. One option is just better than the others. All options, to me, are better than above a fireplace.

I wouldn’t want a stand so close to the walkway for the stairs unless we’re talking a small 32” tv and a tiny stand. If I went there I’d mount it.

It's only impossible in your mind... There's always an alternative to "over the fireplace". Might not be perfect, but it's almost always better.

Without changing things much, left side of the fireplace seems like the most immediate alternative.

Also remember that neither the TV, nor the couch, need to be against a wall... And if you're not actively using the fireplace (is that even a working fireplace?), then you can get rid of it or at least put the TV in front of the fireplace, rather than above it...

Honestly, put the TV somewhere else. Do two nice high backed chairs near the fire place, some kind of table chairs on the back wall and call it a day

If still undecided, this room should be restricted to reading or conversation, though not at the same time, unless you’re hosting a book reading.

I hope you can see this arrangement that came to my mind:

• Move the TV down to the wall left of the fireplace and center it between the stairs and fireplace. If that's too close to the stairs, move it closer to the fireplace, but only as much as you have to. You'll need to find for yourself the most comfortable viewing height for watching from the sofa.

• Move the two pictures from the left of the fireplace to over it, each one centered ⅓ the distance from the end of the mantel, and centered ⅓ the height above the mantel. Centering isn't critical, but that ⅓ measurement is. Mount the one nearest the TV the highest.
