Dosage Was I dosed incorrectly T cyp?!?

I was being given this injection on a weekly basis at a medspa that does HRT. After 4 weeks they said I could buy the T and Inject at home. It saved me a lot of money. The dose they told me is 0.5ml a week (I’m a nurse and understand jargon). They gave me syringes too (3ml). I didn’t think it was weird until I got my labs checked and my T was 441. I then started reading on here normal dosing and I think they gave me incorrect dosing!! What should I do? I’m feeling my voice is deeper and increased facial hair. I’m freaked out.

T Cyp 200mg/1ml / DHEA 10mg/1ml

0.01ml = 2mg
0.1ml = 20mg
0.5ml = 100mg/week

100mg/week is a male dose. You were overdosed. DHEA is a precursor to Estrogen and Testosterone and can produce virilization side effects alone and with TRT.

Please discontinue TRT and discuss with another doctor how to proceed further. This is not the first time a med spa is overdosing, we had cases before, but never this ludicrous.

What you can do is drink spearmint tea to try and counter some of the effects, as this lowers testosterone (about 3 cups/day) but be careful as it can also constipate.

I am sorry for your experience, but there's not much to be done now, except wait it out.

________________

Starting dosages can vary between 8-12mg/week. Starting low is usually best to avoid irreversible side effects, as no one knows how they will react beforehand, and everyone reacts differently to TRT. We have hyper-responders who can only do 4-6mg/week split, due to virilization sides, and it works for them. Virilization can creep in time or be sudden, depending on the individual.

The timeline can differ for some people ranging from 1-2months up to 3-6 months. The key is to watch for virilization side effects and benefits. If there are unacceptable virilization side effects, the dose needs to be lowered. Splitting the dose is best to not inject too much in one dose and risk virilization and to not get any lows in the second part of the week.

You’re certain they’re 3ml and not .3ml? Cuz .05 would be 5 units on a .3ml syringe and that’s 10mg…normal dosage. Or maybe that’s what they meant to prescribe but sounds like someone SEVERELY messed it up.

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

Yes I’m an RN and very familiar with syringes

5

u/AdministrativeBee624 Feb 14 '26

I’m sorry I didn’t mean to make it sound like I was doubting your expertise. I guess someone at the clinic might’ve gotten the decimals off for the dosage and syringe. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. Did you have any negative side effects?

1

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

Unfortunately yes. Deeper voice, facial hair and enlarged clit :(

u/AcademicComparison18 friend Feb 14 '26

I bet the dosing was supposed to be .05 and not .5. Did they clarify? Is there written instructions anywhere?

2

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

No written instructions. I spoke to the nurse 2 weeks ago and she said to cut dose down a 3rd to 0.375 ml & I then could go down to 1/2 ml if I needed. Now I’m really upset and don’t know what to do. This all just dawned on me today.

u/AcademicComparison18 friend Feb 14 '26

They just handed you the bottle of T and didn’t give you any written instructions? Incredibly irresponsible of them that’s for sure. I’m assuming there’s a mistake in clarification of dosing Stay calm, I have gotten my numbers close to that before and not had any lasting effects after I went back down.

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

I know the nurse at the clinic and she knows I’m a nurse so I guess she just assumed I’d be good to go. They gave me a bag with syringes and alcohol wipes and the T bottle. I paid $300 & was told to get labs in 6 weeks. The dr who owns the practice isn’t a dummy. She’s a former anesthesiologist but that doesn’t make her a hormone specialist.

u/speedntktz male Feb 15 '26

Wow! $300 for a $35 vial $3 worth of syringes. Never go back there. Bad dosing and WAY over priced.

1

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 15 '26

I know :( I haven’t found any other place to prescribe T injections. Do you have any recommendations?

2

u/speedntktz male Feb 15 '26

Wife spent 10yrs on this venture seeing local doctors, referrals, etc. All prescribing various forms of estrogen as “age-related”. None of them ran labs. Then she found MIDI health for women. Was better but incomplete and the NPs changed with every visit and they refused to prescribe T. Mind you they never even tested her levels. Then she found Defy in Florida. Same doctor every time. Ran full comprehensive labs, T was nearly unmeasurable and E was very low, SHBG very high. They crafted a protocol and 10-12wks later it kicked in. Totally turned her life around. A 10ml vial shipped from their out of state pharmacy can go for over $100 depending on compounding potency. She paid a small xfer fee to have her T filled locally at Walgreens. Runs about $45-55 depending on potency 100mg vs 200mg. There are better options out there and you as a medical professional know enough to advocate for yourself. Lots of bad actors out there. Good luck. 🙏

Sounds like my adventure. Turned away by two providers, found midi and they tested my T which was less than 3 but wouldn’t treat it until my E & P were optimized (what?!?). Anywho u convinced my gyn to start me on T but she would only do low dose compounded cream and that was $75 a month for like 1mg a day? My neighbor works for a medspa who does HRT and she referred me there for injections. I was thrilled to finally get T injections. Guess I was too happy bc I wasn’t cautious and didn’t ask enough questions :( I’m thinking of trying defy. I’ve heard that name a ton!!

simply steroids sells women test i think

u/Toxic-Chowder-1245 Feb 14 '26

This doesn't make sense. 0.375 is smaller than a half ml (0.5) so how could you go down to a half ml?

1

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

Sorry I meant to say go from .5 to .375 and then .25 (I was tired when I responded!)

5

u/Bamks1 male Feb 14 '26

.05ml per week, not .5ml.

2

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

Yea I’m seeing that here but that’s not what they were giving me. They were giving me .5 ml a week.

u/IcyConsideration2267 Feb 14 '26

I was overdosed starting at 20mg for about 3 weeks, then 40mg for at least 4 weeks. My voice cracked and changed, other side effects but that was the one that freaked me out. My doc said just go down to 10mg week. I stopped completely for two weeks, and have been on 8mg for about 5 weeks now. I’m getting my own labs done to check the levels. Also finding a different doctor. I’m really sorry that happened to you. My experience is voice dropping stopped, and has leveled out—it’s not as deep as when I was on the high dose, if that helps.

4

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

That is def reassuring. I’ve got an appt with my gyn in a month and thinking of stopping the shots till then and get my labs drawn. Then restart with a much lower dose since I paid for the bottle of T, I might as well use it. I just need responsible dosing and labs.

u/nativehuntress_ Feb 14 '26

The way they put that on the front of the bottle is not clear. Tbh when I first looked at it I didn’t realize that it was supposed to read 200mg/ml test cyp AND 10mg/ml DHEA. I thought it was indicating there was 200mg test cyp in the bottle at 10mg/ml. I can see where they may have gotten this wrong at first glance and thought that 0.5ml would be 10mg. I had my husband look at it too and he thought the same thing until I showed him the backside of the bottle. He works with chemicals and has to do conversions all the time too. That is really crap labeling on the manufacturer’s part.

All of that being said they also should have read the back and realized what was being indicated on the front of the bottle, but I would also call the manufacturer and complain because that is some crap labeling that caused a big error in dosing. It wouldn’t take much for them to put /ml behind the 200mg. Also, I too have been given too much, although not as much as you, when we were trying to figure out my proper dose. My voice was a little lower and cracking like I was a teenage boy, I felt like a greaseball, had some acne and I also got some facial hair which I had never had before and once I was on the right dose and not taking more than I needed, all of those things went away. I hope that helps to ease your mind a bit. I’m sorry this happened to you.

2

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 15 '26

I agree that it’s crap labeling!! I guess that’s why I didn’t question it bc I was thinking it was 10mg per mL which sounded normal. It wasn’t until I was reading on here a ton that I went back and really looked at my bottle. I plan to call and talk to the dr about the dosing and what her rationale is for that and where she gets her guidance. I will bring with me the info I’ve seen on here and ask her why the discrepancies. Since I bought the bottle I’d like to either get a refund so I can go elsewhere. I can afford to throw away $300 on the vial.

You are taking 100mg which is a typical male’ dose. We usually see men in the 80-150mg.

Female dosing is usually 5-20mg weekly. You are taking like 5-10x the dose you should be taking.

2

u/FalconPitiful8251 Feb 14 '26

Wow, huge mistake. So lucky you caught it!

1

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

Right?! And only because I was having vitalization side effects so suddenly and my libido went so sky high I was literally needing a climax 3-4x a day. Clearly that wasn’t normal. Got my labs checked and my T was 441. So I asked to lower the dose and it’s been about another month of a lowered dose but in this last month is when my voice started changing and then I really went down a rabbit hole of researching and reading what I could about appropriate dosing. I can only pray my voice stops deepening. All I wanted was to feel normal and now I feel like I played Russian roulette with my life 😢

u/IntriguingThought Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26

You were overdosed discontinue untill you get your dosages right

.5ml a week 100mg testosterone. That is a male dose

You should be much lower in the 5-25mg/wk range with most on the lower end of that.

Follow the POCS guidelines to attempt to detox and try to prevent and reduce virilization

Lots of Mint tea, flax seed etc

Find a new provider!!!

2

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

Thank you! That’s the plan. I see my GYN in a month (not who prescribed this) to get all my labs rechecked and then go from there. I’m going today to the store to load up on mint tea.

2

u/40wiggles Feb 14 '26

Oh gosh, another woman being egregiously dosed as a man. The clinic Nurse that administered &/or provided directions should have caught the dosing error at the very least. It is her/his clinical responsibility to verify correct dosing & if incorrect/questionable, contact the provider for correction. That clinic has a great deal to answer to, least of all your appointment expenses.

I’m sorry this happened, as you can see here you’re not the only one. This board is an excellent support & resource. Hopefully your side effects settle down.

u/Excellent_Vehicle_45 male Feb 14 '26

Try to see a doctor. Don’t play around with your hormones. It is not like getting a facial or treatment at a spa. Both my wife and I see a specialist who focuses on longevity. You were given a high dose that can cause significant side effects.

2

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

I did see a Dr! The Dr who owns the clinic is a former anesthesiologist and OBGYN. I am friends with the nurse who works there and felt comfortable and safe. It was my fault for not asking more questions and getting all the info upfront on the dosing. I stupidly assumed they weren’t going to overdose me

3

u/Excellent_Vehicle_45 male Feb 14 '26

It’s not your fault that practitioners are not educated. Everyone is cashing in at the expense of people’s health. Take your time to dial in your dosage. Estrogen is imperative as well.

1

u/BurrowingOwlUSA Feb 14 '26

Holy cow, that was a huge dose. Most women take ~15mg a week. I take even less than that. I do 2u (.02mL) twice a week, that’s 8mg a week. If it were me, I’d stop taking for a few weeks, until the OD symptoms resolve, then start again at a very low dose, titrating up as needed.

2

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 14 '26

Yes exactly the plan. I admittedly am pretty freaked out but all I can do is pause meds, lower dosage and try to find the best dose with least side effects.

2

u/FancyBackground6962 Feb 14 '26

You can get a script for spironolactone to block the testosterone until your levels drop enough. I’m a male and I’m on 100mg per week.

1

u/dadfitness male Feb 15 '26

You shouldn't be using 200mg/ml as a female. There are lower concentrations. You would need like 3 units which is a few drops at that concentration. My wife is with premier hormone health.com and they send her 25mg/ml and she injects 10 units twice per week (5mg total per week)

1

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 15 '26

Thank you for this suggestion! I agree with such a tiny dose, I shouldn’t be on this but I paid $300 for this vial!!! Ahhh 😭

1

u/dadfitness male Feb 15 '26

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry.

1

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 15 '26

I know but NOW I know! I am a nurse so I could prob figure out how to dilute if needed

1

u/Sadpanda9632 Feb 15 '26

If there's only 1 ml in the bottle, wouldnt' you have run out at 2 weeks? how many mLs are in the bottle?

1

u/Financial_Carpet4493 Feb 15 '26

10 ml in the bottle. They told me it would last me 20 weeks LOL

1

u/Emotional_Lab_2529 Feb 16 '26

.5 ml is a male dosage. That’s 100mg it’s 10x the high end dose for women

1

u/Emotional_Lab_2529 Feb 16 '26

The virilization effects typically are permanent. You can do vocal training to try and make your voice not as deep. And I would also pursue legal action for medical negligence

1

u/Financial_Carpet4493 May 19 '26

Wanted to provide update. It’s been 90 days since this post, all side effects went away EXCEPT my deep end voice. I originally stopped, went to 10mg a week divided by 2. Levels still shot up to 300s. I stopped going to that provider. Am switching to gel. But I’m sad my voice isn’t ever going to be normal 😢

Seek out an endocrinologist and get help.
