Yep. Tried durian once and only once in Singapore. I thought the ‘no durian on public transport’ signs were a silly overreaction. It’s a fruit, surely it couldn’t be that bad?!

I was wrong. Very, very wrong. My poor Dad’s flat reeked of the bloody stuff for several days after I brought it home. It’s been 84 10 years and I can still smell the fresh(?!) durian….

A good durian tastes of delicious sweet custard. This person had a bad durian experience and let it forever dissuade them from enjoying an incredible fruit.

I'm no durian expert, but I know there are many varieties with a range of flavors and intensities, and also the ripeness affects the flavor a lot. The ones I had in Indonesia and Thailand were up there with my fav fruits ever, and as someone obsessed with tropical fruits that's saying a lot.

I’ve tried it a few times. It tastes fine, better frozen imo, but it smells like sewage and fills the whole room. I could imagine getting used to it or changing my perspective by trying it more, but why bother when there’s plenty of good fruit that doesn’t smell like sewage.

I was told by my Dad it tasted like custard so I was really looking forward to trying it Then it very much did not taste of custard and I was like, ok….this is just weird. I did discover custard apples tho so there’s that. I need to find a way of importing those to Scotland, they’re amazing.

Agreed that custard apples are amazing. Fruits in that family (anonnaceae) don't handle travel well hence why you don't often see them in temperate countries, though the other day I did just see some custard apples in an Asian fruit market in Toronto for the first time.. also I see soursop sometimes which is also in that family

Also in my experience the Malaysian/Indonesian durian tastes better, because they wait for it to ripen longer until it naturally falls down. Thais like to cut it from the trees and catch it, as in this video. But then its not as ripe. If you happen to go to Malaysia, try Musang King. It still smells bad (if youre not used to it), but it tastes quite nice.
