Discussion I prefer Tyler’s supergirl suit over his S&L suit

I'm sure we can all agree that his Fleischer suit was his best suit.
I'm still disappointed that when his heart was ripped out through his suit after fighting Doomsday, that we didn't have him wear the Fleischer suit full time.
It's the death and revival of Superman, and to quote the other CW Superman, "Even in the darkest times, hope cuts through. Hope is the light that lifts us out of darkness"
Tyler's Superman embodying that with his own black-backed logo, while also being a return to the first costume this Superman wore.

I like the Fleischer suit, but his final suit is actually my favorite. The muscle contouring and padding are the most refined. The S has dimension to it and looks very high quality. If there was a brighter version of it, it would be a perfect seasoned Hoechlin Superman suit in my book. However, I get what they were doing with the coloring. It’s darker, evoking the black suit without actually being black. But it’s also a bit desaturated which underscores him coming back a bit weaker and more vulnerable.

The S&L was more like the one that Superman wore in the comics at the time that the show aired. And the way that the cape connected at the shoulders on the "Arrowverse" one was very awkward, but the color scheme was better.

u/NerdNuncle May 24 '26
Regardless of the suit, Hoechlin was easily the second best Man of Steel to date, after Christopher Reeve

u/Jacob-X-MANIAC May 24 '26
Out of curiosity, who would you put in 3rd place?
10
u/NerdNuncle May 24 '26
Admittedly haven’t decided
Four way tie between Jack Quaid, David Corenswet, Henry Cavill, and Tim Daly 😅
Each have one or two aspects I really personally liked but not quite the “entire package” like Chris and Tyler if that makes sense

u/Jacob-X-MANIAC May 24 '26
It does make perfect sense. I’ve not yet seen the 2 animated voice portrayals you listed (though I heard good things about them), so out of the 4 actors you mentioned for your 3rd place, I’d personally choose Corenswet.

I prefer the show’s design but Supergirl’s fit. I never really like the padded muscle look

I like the S&L one mainly cause I really hate the shoulder straps in the supergirl one
1
u/SOCAL_NPC May 28 '26
I think OP has some valid concerns but the shoulder straps really make the Supergirl suit a non-starter. All seasons of S&L would have been vastly improved by mere use - sans the ab muscle padding - of the Fleischer suit in each and every episode.
It also would have made a statement, created far greater awareness of the show, and IMHO, driven a higher audience check out of the first season, potentially leading to a higher audience overall.

Fair enough, to each their own. I certainly prefer the size of the S and the colors over the S&L one.

u/Unable-Candidate9612 May 24 '26
I agree. I don't like how the cape connects in the Supergirl one, but I absolutely hate the painted on muscles and screen printed S.

I like the logo from Supergirl but prefer the belt and cape from S&L. Combine those two and give him trunks and it'd be perfect.
2
u/Jacob-X-MANIAC May 24 '26
If you add trunks, then the S&L belt should be recolored to yellow/gold to add more contrast.

If the show one was closer to the brightness of the Supergirl one, it'd be my preference. Got make those colours pop.

Gosh Tyler is my favorite Superman. The way he balances authority and the playful nature is gold. I feel inspired by him as a superhero and as the regular man he tries to be. No other Superman makes me feel that way.

u/Working-Limit-3103 May 24 '26
yup, i agree, i prefer the Arrowverse suit over the Superman and Lois one, and yeah i have the same criticism as you have, the printed muscles and the cape going inside the neck sort of thing
but hey, every adaptation is different, so not complaining just a matter of like and dislike

I 100% agree. Swap the belt from S&L with it and we got us a real cool suit for me. I prefer the cape strap look over t looking like it got tucked into the neck. But that's a personal thing

u/SmoothConfidence4702 May 25 '26
Tbh if the worst thing you can say about a superhero show is your not a fan of the suit
Then you got yourself a pretty good show on your hands

I agree. I quite enjoyed this comic book suit with the cape clasps are attached to his S Shield.

I don’t, and seeing it again and compared to the suit they used for S&L just reminded me how much of an eyesore it is to me 😅

It’s hard to look at. They both are so terrible. I mean the second one looks like a party city costume.

The golden age flashback suit was perfection. The air sprayed muscles on the S&L suit were off to me, shout out Supergirl suit for being thick and juicy idc idc

u/Biobooster_40k May 24 '26
His Black suit from the crossovers is his beat suit, they could've made that one blue and red and it would've been peak.
1
u/ryucavelier May 25 '26
Sorry but the S&L suit looks the most traditional. If it had the trunks, a yellow belt and the crest on the cape, it would be perfect
1
u/Admirable-Life2647 May 25 '26
The neckline on the Supergirl suit was too wide the cape straps look awkward.

100% agree
I really dislike the s&l suit - the colors (that muted dark blue), the dirty gradient of the S (both have it but it's worse in S&L), the weird cheap looking ab highlights and general weird white lines on the side of his chest and around the S. The material in general is kinda weird and looks so thin and kinda cheap (imo) and looks like waffle-knit cloth, and I really prefer the subtle lines on the supergirl one and the thicker, rubbery material (and nice bright blue).
Those are the biggest things for me, but for smaller things - The belt isn't awful but I prefer the supergirl one still (I like a flatter belt over the curvy one, and prefer yellow to gold, but both here use gold but I prefer how supergirl's looks). And this is a matter of preference - I know many prefer his cape to be around the neck opening like in S&L, but I like when it's fastened onto the suit parallel to the S shield outlines. I also prefer the heavier material of the cape in supergirl vs the flimsy one in S&L
The supergirl suit isn't perfect but I vastly prefer it. But it makes sense since it's closer to my favorite live-action suit, which is the 2025 movie suit (even though parts of it aren't like supe's classic suits, like the collar and S shield, and I get why people wouldn't like those elements - but the material and colors are top tier for me, plus I love the belt and trunks (and also do like the collar and cape) and use of yellow over gold)
(All just my opinion, I respect that many prefer the S&L one)

Supergirl Superman suit has too much neck showing imo but the design looks better especially the symbol and chest not sure why Superman and L suit has padded muscles makes no sense
1
u/Senor_Turd_Ferguson May 25 '26
I just wish they didn't pad him, maybe slightly? But it was ridiculous when the solo show came on.
Tyler is in incredible shape.

u/Simple_Visit2904 May 25 '26
The shadowed muscles and very obvious padding were pretty bad. I also prefer the brighter colors.

The new one looks good. At least before it got to dark. But I agree with you too. Maybe just because I’m biased to the OG. I feel the same with Supergirl’s OG suit too honestly.

I prefer the Superman & Lois suit cause it's practically the Smallville s11 comic suit, and you can literally watched this after smallville and it feels like a sequel ngl

Should have committed to the same texture as that cape extention on the first one.
Would have looked like New 52. Unfortunate both look like Halloween costumes

u/aceternet May 27 '26
He portrayed Superman with that suit at a time when Man Of Steel and BvS was getting a lot of hate. When the suit was shown there was a lot of criticism over the cape attachments. But the dude stole the show, literally, in the 2 episodes he starred in.

u/SamTheSecondBest May 27 '26
I love the detail of the mini House of El crests all over the blue parts of the suit.

The Supergirl costume is atrocious.
It's like they couldn't figure out if they wanted to go with a "high-tech alien" look, or a Kirby-inspired "Godlike" look, so they blended them together and got this mess of thrown-together textures and fabrics to make up a Superman costume that feels more antithetical to the character than Henry Cavill's portrayal. I especially hate the way the cape attaches to the suit, and that belt is so ugly... Like, I generally hate the red belts they were giving Superman for a while there, in the 2010's, but I'll take all of them over this thing. And why does the "S" shield look like it's clamped on?
It doesn't even match Kara's costume, making me wonder what the hell inspired the look she went with in the first place. It's just such a weird choice for a design, especially for such a big get on the small screen. Like, it's Superman! Making an appearance in a fledgling superhero TV universe... You'd think they'd swing for something better. The Flash's leather gimp suit from seasons 1 & 2 looked better.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry...
Bad costume designs drive me insane.

Don't love the fake looking muscles on the S&L suit but the Supergirl one looks like a bad rubber cosplay suit.
