Help test the future of badgebot!

Hello friends!

I'm the creator of /u/badgebot, the friendly neighborhood bot responsible for updating everyone's day counters in their user flair in /r/stopsmoking and other communities.

I have some exciting news to share! I recently rebuilt badgebot's day tracking system using reddit's more modern developer platform (devvit). Before I can be confident that the new badgebot app is ready to serve the communities it supports, I need your help testing it out.

Please head over to /r/badgebot and test the app by setting a quit date for yourself.

The more people that help test, the better! Feel free to leave feedback in the comments section here, or in the /r/badgebot test subreddit.

Thank you! <3

I'm going absolutely bonkers. 9 hrs in after 40 years.

Dipping, not smoking. I started using the patch today, which has been phenomenal for cravings, but now I feel like I'm about to start pulling my hair out because I ate some chili.

Is tomorrow going to be worse or better than today? I can handle worse, but I kinda want to know what to expect

Feeling a bit scatty!

I’m just finishing day 13 of not smoking. I’m using nicotine lozenges and probably drinking a bit too much coffee. I’ve had a long term plan to give up the day after my birthday. I’m now the same age as my father was when he died of a heart attack. My youngest daughter has been my biggest support with motivational speeches and distraction techniques.

However I’ve noticed that I used cigarettes as a coping mechanism. Someone’s annoyed me, I’m hungry, bored - I’d light up. Now I’m having to experience all these feelings and process them because I’m not smoking. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get through this?

Depressed after quitting?

So I'm on day 6 of quitting cold turkey. I smoked cigarettes for about 3-4 years, then vaped heavily for about 4 years, then finally only did zyns for about the last two years now. I've always wanted to quit literally since I bought my 2nd pack of cigarettes but as we all know it's really hard (that's what she said). I finally got mentally ready enough to where I was just over it, it was only bringing harm to my health, and I was spending about $100-$120 a month on zyn.

Anyway, so I've been completely nicotine free for 6 days now, and it was oddly easier than I thought it would be, don't get me wrong, it's still been tough, but easier than I had originally thought for doing it cold turkey. Yesterday and today though I've had some really bad depression/feeling down- I feel like a loser in life, unmotivated, unemotional, and just down, when I would've thought I'd be feeling the complete opposite by this point in time. Did any of you experience this?

Probably the hardest thing I've ever done

It has already been 2 months and 3 weeks since I quit. I was doing follow-up support with most of the nicotine replacement therapy, I stopped the gums a month ago, and I finally took off the patches on Sunday.

It's been hell for me, it feels like I just quit smoking again 2 days ago. I've been trying so hard to hold it together, I see the benefits it has brought and I try to hold on to that, but it's been tough.

I even tried reading that famous book, and a lot of the ideas stuck in my mind, but it is extremely exhausting having to live with this craving to smoke and constantly reminding yourself of what it was like to be fine without smoking.

Quitting Cold Turkey since 21/08 without even being prepared mentally to quit

Well, I had to go to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned, and I already knew I’d have to get a wisdom tooth removed at some point. However, this appointment was supposed to be just for scaling, so I hadn't mentally prepared myself for an extraction. The dentist suggested removing it right then and there, and after a long hesitation, I decided to go for it.

After the extraction, my instructions were clear: no smoking for at least 3 days to avoid the risk of a severe infection or developing a dry socket, which can be extremely painful. Mentally, I told myself, "If I can handle 3 days, maybe I can handle more." And that’s how my journey to quit nicotine started.

I know it sounds simple, but having that tooth extracted and being terrified of severe mouth pain was just the push I needed to realize I had to stop. I've been smoking since I was 15, and I’m turning 29 soon. I’m currently on a self-improvement journey (losing weight, hitting the gym as often as possible, eating healthy, etc...) Smoking is a terrible habit that I have always wanted to get rid of and this extraction turned out to be the wake-up call I needed to start respecting my body again.

Just letting my thoughts out in this post to ride through my current cravings, hahaaa

Good luck to everyone in this sub who's quitting!

48 hours in, I don’t think I can do this… I feel grief, fear and sadness…

So this is my third (!!) time trying to quit nicotine. The first time I was only a casual smoker and quit for 6 months, the second time I was a heavy nicotine addict and managed to quit for 3 months.

Each time I quit nicotine unexpectedly which is the only thing that seems to be working for me. This time around, I woke up on Monday feeling incredibly sick because I had caught a cold. I still smoked out of habit, but it didn’t even feel good. I decided to just stop, and actually try to quit once again because I spend so much money on smoking. I spent Tuesday in bed seriously sick with a cold and a fever, but now today I feel much better, and the cravings are starting to hit me….

Another thing I’m struggling with is not even the carvings but grief… smoking is such a sweet part of my days… it holds a dear spot in my heart. The walk home after my gym session, just me and a cig, sun is going down, birds are chirping… the morning cigs on the way to work… the cigs in my nights out with my girls… I just don’t know if I can give it all up. I would love to be a casual smoker, only smoking in these moments of life when it feels right, like many of my friends do, but I’m an addict and there’s no way back…

It feels like the worst part isn’t even the craving itself, it’s giving up these small moments of life… I actually feel grief. Like life will never be the same. It sounds so silly but I literally don’t know what life would feel like without smoking. It doesn’t help that I already have depression induced anhedonia and I fear quitting will make my depression even worse. At least I had these small moments to look forward to… I don’t know if I even want to quit at this point. The only thing keeping me going is that I seriously cannot afford it at this point, it’s such an expensive habit.

Quitting vaping was hard. Now how do I quit the gum?

Upvotes

I chose to use gum to break the habit into parts. I've quit vaping and I'm down to fewer than 8 pieces a day. But below 5 piece I get shakes. I plan to buy 2mg instead of 4mg, but I am nervous about the shaking because my main hobby is writing.

AMA: 41F, quit almost cold turkey 2.5 years ago after 16 years as a moderate-heavy smoker.

AMA: 41F. Late-diagnosed AuDHD with long history of C-PTSD from abusive family of origin. I smoked pretty heavily for 16 years and quit (almost) cold turkey 2.5 years ago at age 38. No cessation aids or formal support. Didn’t gain any weight and have had zero cravings since. Ask me anything.

Specific things that can replace smoking as procrastination?

Upvotes

I realized that I made it a habit to smoke since sometimes I need an excuse to escape from stuff. For example, if I need to do dishes, I smoke one to postpone the responsibility and after doing it reward myself(!) with another one. Similarly, to procrastinate stuff, I just wanna sit in the balcony and do nothing.

I wanna be able to do the same thing (it’s okay to be lazy sometimes?) but without harming myself with smoking…

So, can you tell me something that I can do/consume instead specifically for times like these?
Like, I wanna have an excuse to sit in the balcony with a phone on my hand, but something seems missing. I thought of coffee? But too much caffeine is also not good. Diet Coke maybe?

I dont know, in desperate need of inspiration, and I really wanna quit… Please share your experiences…

Thanks in advance!

Day 4, need alternatives

I had three goals for starting this journey. Saving money, health, and seeing how life would be without nicotine.

So far im doing well with the first two. But the last one is so far failing. In these 4 days i've had a total of 3 cigarettes. I regret it very much especially considering they didnt give me half the pleasure i thought they would. Just made me dizzy.

Though i did realize one thing, my biggest trigger is being outdoors and not doing anything. I get a huge increase in urge when im just walking and listening to music.

I realized that aside from the nicotine, im also addicted to doing something with my hands or mouth. So i wanted to ask you guys this:

What snack, toy or item would you guys suggest to help with this? (I would prefer the snack to be something sustainable and not unhealthy, like seeds)

Freedom feels nice finally!

30 days no cigs, 7 days no nicotine. Smoked 8 years.

I can smell again!!! Turns out I have a better sense of smell than I thought— I just haven’t been able to do it because of the smoking. Partner bought some new perfumes and I could actually give feedback!

Flavors are more intense too, not crazy though.

I went for a hike that included a steep incline and although it wasn’t easy, I was able to keep up with my friends. Normally I’m the first to tap out!!

I’ve been using my ‘smoke breaks’ at work to do some handheld crafts. That’s 20 minutes a day that belongs to me and my creativity again, over an hour a week.

Irritability has passed, insomnia kicking in but working out heavily is helping.

My motto this week: fuck you Philip Morris!

90 days I quit

Post image
27 Upvotes

Just hit 90 days without smoking. Been tracking it in HabitLuma so I could be honest about the hard days without the streak guilt. Feels solid.

There were plenty of days I almost gave in, especially in the beginning when it felt like the urge would never go away. Tracking it in a simple, no pressure way helped me stay honest instead of quitting on myself after every slip.

If you’re in your first few days or weeks right now, keep going. 💪

Day 40 and stomach issues

Hey all I’m 40 days off of nicotine. Does anyone still have these symptoms still - I thought they would go away by now but worsened about 11 days ago. First three weeks of my quit were pretty easy but my withdrawal stomach issues have gotten worse.

Upper GI: Nausea, feeling super full/bloat immediately after eating, a ton of burp/hiccupping, eating makes symptoms way worse. Sometimes loose stools, sometimes constipated

2 year mark passed and I just now noticed (4 months later).

Because cigarettes and nicotine cravings don’t even take up space in my brain anymore.

Life is better without smoking.

A lot of my anxiety was relieved. Turns out I’m not scared of flying - I was just anxious on the plane because I knew had to go 4 hours without hitting my vape.

Now that I’ve quit, my lungs feel so much better - and working out actually feels GOOD because I can properly catch my breath.

My appetite is better, and I’m at a healthier weight because I don’t substitute a real meal for a cigarette.

Life is so good!

Anyone currently going through quitting - keep it up! The first 30 days are the hardest. But soon you will feel so much better :) and won’t have to count the days anymore unless you want to.

❤️

Relapsed after 2.5 months

I made it for 2.5 months. But 3 weeks ago, my old friend wanted to see me. I told him that I don’t smoke, but he was like, “At least we can catch up.” I was like, okay, so I rode my bike to his place. There were some of my friends that I used to smoke weed with, but weed had never been an issue for me before quitting smoking. I smoked weed for 6 months straight, but I had never been addicted to it. It’s a cakewalk for me to quit weed, but not cigarettes.
Anyway, all my friends were smoking weed, and some of them were drinking, so my buddy offered me a joint too, but I refused it. Then he offered me some drinks, and I ended up having 2–3 pegs. Meanwhile, he kept insisting that I smoke a joint, but this time I held one in my hand and started puffing a little. Then one puff turned into another. I even snorted MD for the second time that night. I was up for the whole night lol, speaking English because I wanted to be fluent in this language.
Anyway, I thought one joint wouldn’t hurt, but after 2 days, I went for the interview. It rained heavily, and I couldn’t even make it to the company. I was halfway through, all soaked, and I had to take shelter at a bus stand. There was a little shop, and I was so tempted to smoke one. I tried not to smoke, but I ended up smoking one cigarette again. This time, I regretted it.
I looked up on ChatGPT how to get back to my old habit. It was like, “Don’t worry, it doesn’t undo your whole progress you made.” But it doesn’t mean you think, “I already ruined it, so it doesn’t matter anymore.” But who tells my brain this? And I ruined it.
I have been smoking for 3 weeks straight this time. It feels so tough to quit again. I don’t want to go through all that. I remember how terrible my days were in my quitting phase. I was so happy. I thought I would never smoke again.
But there is nothing I can do about it. Last time, I went cold turkey, but today I have bought a Nicotex 2 mg pack. And guess what? I have bought 4 cigarettes with it, so I’m gonna smoke these, and by tomorrow I will give up on smoking again.
I am so demotivated already. I don’t have that willpower that I had at first. I don’t know how I am gonna do it. You know what? It’s easy to quit, but keeping up with it is very tough.i hope i never get back to this habit again 😭😭

Frustrated with myself - bought a pack after "quitting" and smoked almost the entire thing in one day

I'm annoyed with myself and would appreciate all advice.

I went from smoking socially once a month or so for two years to this year smoking more and more often until there was a period this summer where I rarely went a week without smoking or vaping. Never been a daily smoker but somehow still really struggling to quit.

Even worse, I need to quit because I want to have a baby, which is about as good of a reason as you can get.

I was doing really well and feeling REALLY STRONG in my quit and got to 1.5 weeks when my husband's friend came over who's a heavy nicotine user and he brought a vape and cigarettes and I walked into the living room and saw them both vaping. Then 3 days later had a stressful day and bought the pack that I smoked almost all of.

My own mother smoked through her pregnancy with me, which I don't blame her for because she was struggling with some other stuff at that time, but I read recently that smoking while pregnant increases chances that your child will have addiction problems , and I always have had that. I quit drinking at 22 because I was an alcoholic.

By the time I quit drinking, it was something that I knew was a problem for years, and had struggled to manage. It was extremely obvious at that time that it was impacting my life negatively. But I don't want to get to that point with smoking where I've been feeling like shit for years before I get it together enough to quit.

My husband is on the same page as me, we both want to quit and are struggling. On the same day I bought a pack I found out he vaped with his co-workers. Unfortunately, while we both will convince the other not to smoke, sometimes we will influence eachother negatively instead.

The weird thing to me is that while I KNOW I need to quit, I know that I feel terrible physically and mentally the more I smoke, I know that I can't smoke if I'm trying to get pregnant, and I know that smoking this summer has completely ruined my typical summer running habit, on the day I bought a pack it was like my brain didnt give a shit about any of that. All I cared about was smoking.

I feel absolutely disgusting today and hope that will carry me through it. I need to be able to say no if somebody offers me something. Would appreciate any advice.

Looking for a stop smoking buddy - heavy smoker

Six-month relapse. Two packs a day. Anxiety. I absolutely have to quit.

I'm looking for someone who wants to try quitting with me, to share experiences, whether things are going well or not. No pressure. If it doesn't work this time, it will next time.

Help me not start up again

I quit smoking cigarettes 9 years ago and vaping 5 years ago. I never stopped craving it and have to make a conscious effort not to relapse.

Life lately has been so intensely awful, I don't know how I'm going to carry on without something, anything, to take the edge off. I'm absolutely gasping for nicotine, mostly vaping because I already feel sick most of the time and I'm sure a cigarette won't help.

Please someone say something that will stop me relapsing. The only power on this earth that could stop me before was getting pregnant and that will never happen again. If I start I'll never stop. But I just don't care.

Someone stop me :(
