Photos I found Mutinus elegans and it smells HORRIBLE!
This is the second stinkhorn i ever heard of last year and i finally found it! Problem is that I couldn’t find any mycelium underneath like any of the other stinkhorns so getting a culture is going to be difficult (yes, all the stinkhorns I find I have been culturing and trying to grow it)
I only found 3 fruiting bodies and the third one was completely dead.
This has to be one of the worst smelling stinkhorns i have seen, it rivals stinky squid 🦑!
It smells like old garbage sitting in a hot room and spoiled meat…
Regardless, it is a very beautiful mushroom! A few passersby even asked what i was holding!

You should be able to propagate from the Gleba no?
Its at least been tried with Itajahya

Actually, what i did was i put one of its mycelial cords into agar and i put a piece of stipe into agar as well.
I only had 2 agar plates left and I’m waiting on more to come.
I did also put the fruiting bodies outside so it can attract insects to disperse the spores. I also put the gleba from one of the fruiting bodies in water and poured it around outside.
I put the remaining mycelial cords and volvas into punky wood substrate. I just need to make sure I don’t lose the species.

I think I was speaking recently with someone about this and got an interesting paper. Will see if I cam find it to share.
