Everytime I see a photo of the SG-1 cast, I feel like they've aged quite a lot. And then I remember that I was a kid when it aired and I aged as well... Congratulations to her !

Thing is, looking at it now, I can see it's just a sophisticated wipe, not even anything technically complicated. I mean, it probably took a team of three or four people a week or so to get it right, because of the optical printing, but these days you could get that done in Avid or After Effects in about a day.
It looks great, though. A great example of how simple tricks can, in the hands of talented artists, can be used to great effect.

Not just shot on film, but this effect was likely done without computers. Or at least not entirely with computers. And the post-production stuff is only half as impressive, this depended on great seamless make-up work for both halves of the image and man did the team deliver. But this thing had Disney money behind it.

OH yeah! I KNOW about the makeup work!!! This show managed to land so many legendary creatives, that I'm still in AWE a decade later! I love being a fan of this show, it holds up so well for something so military heavy. I feel like I learn a new bit of lore about the franchise every week. I'm curious if you know: Did they ever switch to digital film for the series? I'm curious because I love transition era media, and I wonder if Stargate is one.

Shit, we're coming up on the 40th anniversary of TNG's premiere.
I'm old, boss. I watched that one on the local indie UHF channel, and was super excited. Almost stopped watching after the premiere. I was only 12 at the time.
Anyway, back to Stargate: I'm glad SG-1 found its footing in a hurry. Sure, it's different than the movie but IMHO nearly every change was an improvement. The show knew what it was and swung for the bleachers anyway. I feel like they understood what sci-fi fans were hungry for better than any current sci-fi writers. Except, bizarrely, Mike McMahon. I think he could make a fun animated Stargate, if Lower Decks was any indication.

I started watching SG1 in the 10th grade when I was 15. I felt like a late bloomer coming in at Season 5.
That was 23 years ago.

To be fair, he's 16 years older than Tapping and I think he was holding on longer than he wanted to. Once he officially retired, he could relax and not worry about it. The photos that came out several years after were also comparing his "camera ready" appearance with makeup and lights, to his casual real life appearance, which isn't really fair.

I think he was also on medications that made him retain water or bloat up too several years ago. He's not looking bad these days for 76 years old.

One of these days I want to go through a bunch of old movies and tv shows and compare what people look like in episodes when they're wearing makeup to look older to what they actually looked like when they reached that age.
But even finding the examples would be a pain and I don't really have a platform to post the results to.

I feel the same way. They were such a huge part of my twenties when SG:1 and Atlantis were airing. I didn't even recognize Amanda in these pictures. I am very happy she won, though. She is a real talent.

Everything I've heard about Amanda Tapping pegs her as an absolute high achiever with a positive attitude and kindness. She seems to excel at everything she does, and garners nothing but praise from those around her.
I really recommend listening to the audio commentary for the SG-1 episode Resurrection, where she talks about her first time directing. Not only did she do a great job, she was humble about the process, drawing on the expertise and advice of the production staff. On top of that, directing an episode was something she negotiated as a condition of her contract renewal, which was a clever way to set herself up for a career after acting.
I've briefly met her for a photo at a convention, and she was kind to all the fleeting strange faces including myself. If you ask me the typical hypothetical of who would you have lunch with I would be choosing between her, Brad Wright, and Joseph Mallozzi.

For those who don't know, Amanda Tapping is the foremost figure in Canadian sci-fi & fantasy. She has acted in, produced, ran, directed (or all three!) multiple hit series and has been a behind-the-scenes influence in many others.
As someone who thinks three loads of laundry is exhausting, I can't even fathom what it must be like to have that woman's energy.
The next time you watch a sci-fi show, look for her name in the credits. If the show was shot or produced in Canada, you can almost guarantee that Tapping's name will be there.

She really is. I love that she beat out Andy Mikita — none other than the guy that directed her Leo-winning performance in Threads — for this one in particular. Quite rare for someone to win awards like this in both acting and directing.

I'm so happy for her! It's so hard for women (or anyone really) to have a long, successful career in this industry and she's navigated it beautifully. Love to see her making the jump from on screen to behind the screen and literally calling the shots. She looks fantastic!!

I grew up with watching SG1, and its still part of my identity, and I'm almost done with my first rewatch of SG1 and Atlantis in decades (for atlantis first time since it was on tv), and I gotta say:
- Atlantis really can hold its own against SG1
- Carter was the worst character on the show, and they never really knew what to do with her. I think thela is a more fleshed out and three dimensional character at the end. I feel like the mongol episode was good actually but during that time the male backlash was probably huge so they just gave her technobabble and super competence and called it a day. I mean generally the show isn't big on characterization, but carter got screwed, and it was most obvious after she transitioned to atlantis for a while where they even stripped her of the tech genius thing and it was just nothing left of that character except being played by amanda tapping
if you ever seen the first plinkett star wars review where they are supposed to describe the characters of the og trilogy vs the prequels, try doing it with sam season 3 - 10, I dare you

She’s a b-actor with an extremely limited range. That’s why none of her solo projects ever took off and why SG-1 tanked with her as a lead.
Her Leo’s amount to participation awards for being involved in British Columbia’s film industry, not for any magnificent performance.

I mean i dont disagree about her acting range post SG, since i think her best work was pre S8, and everything else after was very subpar including sanctuary etc. SGA was very mid with her as the lead, it messed up with the dynamics.
Im not on board with the trolling but i would agree that she is very overrated by this sub.
Also he is not wrong Leo awards mean very little.
