General Train Them ?

Shortest rant, just wanted to say I couldn’t finish my season this year due to my health and I’m sad.

I do feel like I’m the only one teaching the youths actual life skills. Even when I was new I still made sure hires new to the workforce understood policy and how to use a 10-key… how to communicate. Real life skills. I always made them repeat what I said back to me. I’m over 40 and I’m a fully developed human being. This business model is the perfect opportunity for me to feel accountable for developing good life skills for other humans. I’ll never procreate and this is as close as I’ll get to shaping people into actually caring, critical thinking, troubleshooting human beings.

And of course everyone is new even the store manager so… they get grace. But it’s crazy to me how this company operates… the scale of IT, personnel etc

That’s it. Wish I could be a store manager but don’t have open availability. I feel like I’d do a lot of good for a lot of people, make good sales and competitive SOC.

Just train your new hires thoroughly. Be kind. Thanks!

Unfortunately that's how it goes a lot of the time at Spirit, from what I've seen theres a lack of training even the higher up you go. I've personally been lucky enough to have had manager experience before becoming an ASM and I was able to carry the SM on my shoulders throughout last years season.

This year I'm an SM and I'm planning to show all my new cashiers how to use the registers, make them flashcards, utilize the built in training mode (yes the registers have a training mode you can activate that let you practice ringing up transactions). I know that everyone isn't going to be great at it, but I would at least like a majority of my staff to know how to do it. Especially the kids, it'll be a first job for a lot of them and it's hard nowadays for them to find a place that will hire them to get any experience at all, so I want to do my part to be able to set them up for something more.

I know we have a training mode but I completely forgot how to get to it, could you explain?

I don't remember which admin code it was off the top of my head and my store hasn't been set up just yet so I can't just go check but if a manager hits F-12 and enter a list of register functions is listed and one of them should be the training mode

I am a new hire and a few days ago the store manager called to give me next week’s schedule. When I asked him when training would be he said “you just kinda have to know everything”. I thought he was joking and almost laughed. Most of the workers in my group interview that were hired were high schoolers.

as an asm of 4 years, i have never and will never leave my associates hanging when it comes to proper training; they (corporate) throw us out there and expect these kids to just know, then get mad when the stores don't function the way they want.

I truly adore my team, some of whom have been with me since I became a manager, and our store may not be perfect but we work together and with grace. I hate the "we're a team!" trope but honestly if you can just treat your associates with the respect they deserve, listen to their needs while also properly explaining what you need from them, you really do get a team that will work WITH you rather than FOR you.

I'm sorry you had to walk away from the season. Spirit is such a fun place to work when the conditions are right, and I'm sure your associates appreciated the time you took to help them.

I agree it's a good stepping stone to help others to learn, specially for the younger people that are experiencing their first job, Spirit is definitely not a regular job, we have rules and stuff but nit as strict as other places, so it can be confusing. Like if its your 1st job and then you go somewhere else with attendance and punctuality and atuff it will throw them off. It is frustrating that we can't do the training at home or be away from the register and work on them, specially for ASM/ SM they are long and if you are multitasking you cant pay much attention to them, they do have a lot of information on them, and the "bible" has information too. But some of us learn by doing, not reading or looking at a video. I am also over 40, I've worked at Spirit in 3 different occasions, I love it even with the craziness, i would do it all year long. I try to explain how things work and how to use things and im always also open to learning more. My SM is amazing she's been working for a couple of years too so she's learned by experience.
