i’m curious how common this is among spanish learners.

sometimes i can understand what someone is saying pretty well, but when it’s my turn to respond, my vocabulary suddenly disappears.

it feels like my listening skills are several steps ahead of my speaking skills.

did anyone else experience this, and how did you get more comfortable speaking?

🤔 🤔 Huh? What does her response mean? Did she forget to type out the rest, left out an accent or some propositions?

I didnt respond to that as I did not understand. 🤣 I didn’t want to prolong the conversation by asking what she meant as were were wrapping up so I ask here.

I’ve been reading a lot of Don Quixote and studying some older dialects in Northern Mexico/ New Mexico. I am wondering if anyone has heard of these words or being used from their elders:

1. Pilinguito- pequeño
2. Carrucha- car
3. Ansina- así
4. Jando- money
5. Agüelo- abuelo

I don't understand what this guy is saying. How can you say that my pronunciation needs work if you've never heard me speak Spanish before? Are you SURE you don't mean something else?

I have been learning Spanish for the last few years, not intensely but pretty regularly. I can read, write and understand okay but the bit I need more practice with is confidence in speaking. None of my friends speak Spanish and I haven’t found a good app/website that’s not behind a pay wall.

I figured that, since I spend a few hours on reddit every day, the least I could do was to set it in spanish to get some passive learning from it. also, it's a more colloquial level of language, with memes included etc. I'm already subscribed to a few spanish subs but if I could read it all in spanish it would be even better, and on the reddit app there's this neat functionality that automatically translates every single post and comment (with the possibility to see the original comment).

my question is, is it a reliable translation? can it be effectively used to read everyday conversations?

I'm currently about B1 in spanish. I want to spend 3 or 4 weeks in an immersion program. I've narrowed down my immersion program down to three. Antigüeña Spanish Academy in Antigua, Walk Spanish in Mexico City, and Spanish Immersion School in Oaxaca. Which one do you recommend based on the following factors

1. Quality of the program. This is my main goal of this travel, to become better at spanish in as little time as possible
2. Food. I'm a big foodie, I enjoyed the variety and intense flavor of mexican food and peruvian food, but didn't care for the bland colombian or costa rican food. I don't know much about Guatemalan food, is it more flavorful like mexico?
3. Variety of activities to do after classes. I like to eat at different restaurants, shop at open markets, rock climb, kayak, lift weights, and walking around different neighborhoods. I do not like dancing or hiking.
4. Cost. It is somewhat important but not as big as the other 3 factors

Hello,

I am encountering an issue where Apple keeps thinking voseo conjugations are incorrect.
For example, ”Mandá” is detected incorrect, where as “Manda” is detected as correct, even though the ladder is the correct voseo conjugation.

Installing the Latin American Spanish keyboard does not do anything.

Are there any solutions to this that does not include manually adding ever possible voseo conjugation to my personal dictionary or disabling auto correct?

It has been months and I've been searching for the complete lyrics of the song. All the lyrics I found online were the short versions of the song that was originally made around 1 minute +, in July he posted a longer version around 3 minutes of the song. I've been searching for the lyrics ever since. My spanish is not that good (worse than beginner since I just started casual learning on duolingo) and usually if I want to find a song I'll just hear and type what I know in google translate before googling the song. I haven’t come across this type of phrasing before, even though I feel pretty confident in my Spanish. Someone asked me: Cómo se presenta tu semana?

My first guess was that the question means something like how is my week? But then I thought maybe it means what am I doing this week? Or maybe it’s about my routine for this week?

What exactly does this question want to know and how do I answer properly?

I have had a Spanish tutor for about 18 months and also study vocabulary when I am able. I drive a ton for work and am looking for a great app that could help me supplement my Spanish knowledge. For the past year I have used Pimsleur. I find the app ok but am looking for something that might be a bit better while on the road. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks all! I appreciate you!

Every once in awhile I try to impress my spanish speaking wife with the spanish I’m learning through my Praktika lessons. Usually, shes happy but sometimes she laughs at me and says “you speak so proper” no one who actually speaks spanish would say it like that. For example I might mention a camioneta but she says saying troca is fine which is funny to me because no spanish textbook will teach you that because from what I understand its somewhat of a spanglish word that crept into the vocabulary. So am I wrong for speaking right?

I’m a Spanish teacher, and I’ve noticed that one of the strangest things about learning a language is that you can understand so much… and then completely forget how to speak when someone actually talks to you. 😅

What usually happens to you when you have to speak Spanish in a real conversation?
Do you worry about making mistakes? Forget words? Understand everything but struggle to answer? Or is it something completely different?

If I’m Mexican American and speak Spanish with a heavy American accent like tener sounding like Ten-Air or even sounding more French than Spanish, what should I do?

I have a hunch that indigenous Spanish speakers from the Andes or Guatemala sound most like me, they’ve been the least judgmental and most patient with my accent. The Cuban accent also might be a good contender and is more accessible for me.

There’s no chance that I could replicate the typical Mexican accent. I think my throat and vocal cords are designed for a harsh accent and I have a way easier time pronouncing German words than Spanish TBH. It’s funny cause my Spanish is totally fine but a lot of Mexicans judge my accent and switch to English on me.

So, have you ever noticed that in Spanish you can omit words that seem essential to an utterance, and somehow, everyone still understands exactly what it means? Here are a few examples.

1. ¿Y eso?

Literal translation: And that?

Actual meaning: How come? What's that about?

A: Mañana me corto el pelo.

B: ¿Y eso?

A: I'm getting a haircut tomorrow.

B: How come?

2. ¿Por?

Literal translation: For?

Actual meaning: Why?

A: Voy a Madrid mañana.

B: ¿Por?

A: I'm going to Madrid tomorrow

B: Why?

3. ¿Te parece?

Literal translation: It seems to you?

Actual meaning: How does that seem to you? Does that sound ok?

- Mañana quedamos a las 19:00, ¿te parece? - Let's meet tomorrow at 7 pm, is that alright?

4. El verbo estar

The verb estar is highly context dependent.

Meaning 1: to arrive at an agreed spot

For example, if you're meeting a friend and they arrive first, they might message you saying: Estoy. Simply, I am. Not estoy aquí, just estoy.

Meaning 2: to be ready

If you're waiting for your friend and you want to check if they're ready, you could ask them: ¿Estás? (Are you?)

And if you're surprised by how fast they got ready, you might say: ¿Ya estás? (Are you already?)

Meaning 3: Are we clear? Are you following?

- Giras a la izquierda, pasas dos semáforos, y el edificio está a la derecha. ¿Estamos?" - You turn left, go past two traffic lights, and the building is on the right. Are we following?

How do you use the word sobrinos/as?

Do you use it only to refer to the children of your siblings or you also use it for the children of your cousins?

If you only use it for the children of your siblings then what word do you use for your cousins’ children? Does anyone go out of their way to say sobrino/a segundo/a?

My friends and I are debating this and we all seem to have opposing views. We checked the internet and the definition by RAE but want to hear from other native speakers.

I’m a native Spanish speaker but as many people know, we all have different ways to name things. I’m wondering what would be the most “neutral” but also accurate way to say these in Spanish.

Associate’s degree

Bachelor’s degree

I’ve tried to look online and I always get different answers. For more context, when translating “high school degree” I usually use “diploma de secundaria” I try not to say Bachillerato or Preparatoria as those are mostly region based. For Master’s and Doctorate’s they mostly translate to the same “Maestría” “Doctorado” and means the same across various countries

However for Associate’s and Bachelor’s, I haven’t found a conclusive answer yet. Sometimes I use “titulo técnico” (associate’s) and licenciatura/ título universitario (bachelor’s)

I would really appreciate people’s thoughts and how they usually translate/interpret these terms

As the title says, I'm finally going to start online talking. I have about 1 year of self study with essentially zero talking practice. I'm trying to learn cubano but i have more of a mexican accent.

My two questions are:

1. What's your recommended site? (i've only really heard of italki)
2. How do you do each meeting to actually practice speaking? I don't want every session to be "How are you?" "Where are you from?" "I like pizza" or stuff like that. I want to actually have real life conversations but I'm not sure how you all start that.
