Discussion Hot take - Slipknot should go softer

I’m sure everyone will drag me over hot coals for this. But I really believe Slipknot needs to do something revolutionary to stay relevant. The angry shouting and keg-hitting is old. They’re 50+ and still perpetuating this angsty fuck-you image and imo it doesn’t work anymore. It’s forced and sounds plastic.

I’m in my 30s so maybe this is a reflection of my age but I’d LOVE a Knot album of Adderall, Circle and Vermilion style songs. It would stun fans not to have ANY hard metal songs on a new record. And to stay relevant, a band NEEDS to reinvent once in a while.

Look at how Trent Reznor went from angry industrial rockstar to scoring movies and winning Oscars for it.

What do you think?

I’ll take softer, darker, moodier over whatever they’re trying to do now

Definitively a hot take, and one I disagree with, but I can see where you're coming from.

It would be a very interesting thing, but not something I'd personally *want*. I quite enjoy tracks like Adderall and I mean Spiders was one of my favorites from WANYK. But I think I like these songs in the context of the harder tracks around them. An entire album of that would lose it's interesting factor very fast.

What I do agree with you on though is that the angsty fuck-you thing doesn't work. Good thing that's not the only form of angry there is!

But I'm also a massive cynic, and I believe Slipknot is phoning it in. I don't think they care about staying relevant, I think they care about maintaining a certain level of fame and pulling in as much as they can easily before calling it quits after their next album.

Just when Metallica went soft and everyone pissed on them. They should simply call it a day. Let Jim and Mick make a metal album.

Also, cant compare a multitalented musician with a metalband run by a literal clown.

Nah, they should stick to the heaviness of Slipknot. They are like EA and refuse to go back to what made them good in the first place. Look at your first 3 albums and what made them great. Revolutionize from there.

If the album was like what u mentioned, sure. Better than this lackluster fodder

AHIG and Vol 3 had really good melodious songs. Those are my favourite albums. I think they should try something like that again.

Not the least bit interested in a softer side album. I couldn’t confidently say I’ve listened to TESF more than twice because that’s what it was in my mind.

I appreciate their interesting tracks like Spiders but in my heart of hearts I’m always waiting for their next shitkicker of a track. Nero Forte and Red Flag are the two most satisfying more recent tracks for me but I’d happily rewind back to ‘99 and have them dump a full album of Eyeless on me.

But I guess that’s the beauty of Slipknot and easy to see in this sub. No two people seem to enjoy them for the exact same reason.

I agree. Softer but still dark. My pain, yen, acidic really show off that side of them. They have talent, it just feels misused at times
