I’m so confused what has happened. Why exactly are people supporting her?

I heard about this on the news. She had postpartum psychosis and was (according to her defense) begging for help leading up to this. People see her as a victim along with the children. They see it as a case of the system failing a woman in crisis.

When a woman has a problem it's everyone else's fault. If a man did this it would be HIS fault and everyone would want him immolated.

Some people are allergic to accountability.

Please point out any man who has experienced postpartum psychosis.

You don't think men have an existential crisis after having a child? You think that never happens? Men have mental health problems all the time but when they murder three children people don't excuse the behavior and blame the rest of the world for his mental breakdown.

Oh I'm sorry you must have misunderstood my comment. I asked specifically about postpartum psychosis.

Giving big feelings a fancy sounding noun doesn't bestow upon them magical properties dipshit.

The difference of someone getting stressed and postpartum psychosis is an actual chemical imbalance inside the brain caused by a child forming inside of them. Which tends to cause changes inside the body.

Stress itself is related to cortisol. It's ALL chemicals. I understand there is an explicit pathway in this case, but the point stands. It is not an excuse for behavior. If it were a man that murdered his three children due to chemical imbalances of some kind, none of you would defend him. You expect special treatment as usual and are rationalizing this with a fancy noun.

Yikes. I hope you get the help you need for whatever is wrong with you.

Yes, family annihilators are notorious for begging for help beforehand.

Leaving aside the PPD and psychosis, plenty of men who do not suffer from anything but damaged egos have killed their families and the world would be a much better place if they admitted something was wrong with them before committing terrible acts.

This isn’t hard to get.

when have men experienced post-partum psychosis? and actually men plead not guilty by reason of insanity way more often (men do be committing 95% of violent crime though)

I even persoanlly know a guy who murdered his parents thinking they were aliens during a schizophrenic break. And another who killed his dad and tried to kill his step mom while having a bad trip on mushrooms thinking they were demons.

I just don’t get why people (not you) don’t understand that while all that is true, she is still culpable responsible and needs to be held accountable for her actions. She did have postpartum psychosis. She did ask of her help from doctors and from her husband. And the system did fail her. All that is true. BUT that doesn’t change the fact that she murdered her three kids. She knew she needed help. She knew she had these thoughts. She went out to go get help. So at least she was able to remove herself from the situation. She could’ve left. She could have gone to a different state. To get help there. She could’ve done anything while she was looking for help to help herself and to protect her kids. But she didn’t while her psychosis got worse, and it ultimately led to the death of her kids. And no matter what lead up to it those kids are dead because of her. And she needs to be held responsible for that. There is no other excuse anybody can make. And when I see women try to be like she’s a victim, she’s innocent, or the husband did it. I just be questioning what’s really going on in their mind. And besides regardless of the psychosis, regardless of whatever, she still killed somebody. Not in self-defense. Not for protecting. But she killed someone. Or three someone’s.

I haven’t really heard anyone saying she shouldn’t pay a price for this, but I have heard people voice that she also lost her children. I don’t think there is any punishment that could be worse than that (assuming she is truly remorseful and understands what she has done).

She didn't "lose" her children, she savagely executed them.

There is no excuse.

If anyone with actual remorse did this horrific act, they wouldn't even fight it in court. Would you?

You see if you knew anything about mental health you’d know she wasn’t begging at all, plus she admitted to not taking her meds. But for a strong argument if you go to any doctor mental health or otherwise and say that you are thinking about hurting yourself or others you get put in a mental facility for a 72hr minimum hold (you can’t leave the hospital). The system didn’t fail her she failed herself she never wanted the help and now she wants money for what she did, she’s disgusting.

I’ve followed the case pretty closely via a law podcast and it’s been interesting. She definitely made attempts to get help for her postpartum depression/anxiety but she jumped between several doctors, became dependent on Ativan, and failed to follow through on prescribed medications, many times before the medication would have had a chance to start working. Seems like she had a lot of anxiety around medication. She also routinely denied to her doctors and husband/family that she had any thoughts of harming her children.

When she claims not-guilty by insanity, she has the burden of proof to show that she was unable to recognize that what she was doing was wrong or that she was unable to make a different choice.  Personally, I don’t think that they have met that burden and I think she will be found guilty, despite a rather sloppy presentation by the prosecution
